Prologue

Day Seven

Being dragged by guards through Candor hallways really opened closed wounds, physically and mentally for the girl.

Dragged from her hospital bed in Erudite.

Dragged to the vehicle which carried her to Candor.

Dragged from the vehicle to a holding cell.

She couldn't walk. The injuries done to her leg have caused her to undergo three surgeries; all muscular damage. Her balance; also affected by a drug given to her while she was held hostage in a building for three and a half years while her family members were told she was dead, makes her almost unable to learn how to use crutches for the time being.

Things have been hard. Today is here only to make them worse.

No one told her what was happening; that seven days ago the board of leaders from the five factions decided that she would be put under trial just as everyone who was rescued was. This way, they would know who was and wasn't an ally, or in Tris Prior's case, what the hell happened.

She is dragged to the center of a massive audience, and the scene is very familiar to three years ago when she stood in the very same place and publicly announced that she shot her best friend's boyfriend.

Silver domes meant to project her voice hover above her, and her mind races in panic as she searches the crowd.

She panics as she cannot focus on one thing, not even one individual person. Crowds had never done her good inside the building; blank memories of people surrounding her and beating her to a pulp filling her mind.

That's all she has: a few blank memories. Memories that she acknowledges, but has no clue where they're from, what truly happened during them, or who or what is in them.

So she wobbles on her right leg in the middle of a sea of people, unable to barely stand with her lack of balance and the beige colored cast that goes from her foot up to her bony thigh.

A tall man comes up with a needle she recognizes as a serum transmitter. She cowers at his strength and authority; scared he will kick her already unbalanced foot out from under her before he leaves.

The needle goes in her neck, and she surprises herself when she squeals lightly, flinching away from the needle.

"May the truth set you free." The man says just as another man starts talking.

"State your full name." West barks.

Words burst from her chest, but none make it out of her mouth. A series of raspy breaths are heard by few as the girl manages to catch her balance on her foot.

"What is your name?" He says again.

"Beatrice Prior." The girl says in a short breath, only few able to hear her.

"You prefer to go by your alias, Tris, correct?"

She nods.

"What happened to your leg?"

The girl digs through her bloody memories, but panics through the amount of people she is watching in the crowd.

"I d-don't know." She answers honestly.

The girl feels a prick of pain in her neck, traveling down her spine. She then remembers the knife sinking into the flesh of her leg. The rest is a blur of partial consciousness.

"You're lying."

"I don't remember." She rasps in a breath, loosing her balance and catching herself with her right hand on the floor.

Guards rush to pick her up, for there is some rule about standing in a trial. West stops them, knowing it is inevitable trying to get this girl to stand.

"Who caused your leg to be injured?"

Memories of David flood Tris's mind. Him hovering a gun over her, her pleads and cries as she bled in agony.

"David. Shot me. A lot." She rasps from her new location on the ground.

"Oh, so now you remember." West says sarcastically.

Tris looks around frantically, feeling as if the room is spinning. The amount of space is too much. If she can't see all four corners of the room, she freaks for she cannot recognize each face that could be out to kill her.

She breathes heavily, half whining as she exhaled rapidly.

"Why are you panicking?" West asks.

The girl doesn't answer.

"You're forcing yourself to pass out."

The man was lying, however. She was not intentionally hyperventilating. She was in fact petrified.

"STOP THIS!" Someone yells from the crowd, and soon everyone is yelling for the trial to be shut down.

But that only causes the girl to freak out even more. She rolls to her side, holding her nose in her hands and screaming.

She felt her body shaking, but everything was numb.

No one was allowed to console her, for there was a glass barrier between her and the crowd of people.

By a code of law, no one was allowed to be with her inside the interrogation underneath the silver domes. All it would take for all of it to end would be for West to say over the microphone Thank you for your honesty, but he wouldn't.

He hadn't gotten the information he needed yet.

"SHUT IT DOWN!" Voices continue to scream as the girl trembles on the ground under the domes.

"WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!"

People began to leave, unable to no longer watch the girl trembling in the center of the stadium style setting of the room.

"QUIET." A new voice booms over the microphone system. It comes from Erudite leader, Mark.

"As of currently, this trial is being shut down for medical incapability to answer questions and will be postponed to a later date. As for now, Beatrice Prior will return to Erudite Medical and be eventually discharged as an innocent individual. A later date will be determined where her trial will be done privately. For now, she is innocent. This trial is over. Go home." Mark says, obviously irritated by the end of his statement.

Tobias rushes to the scene of his girlfriend, elbowing a guard in the nose on his rush to the center of the room.

He holds her trembling head in his lap, stroking her blonde hair through his fingers.

"You're free, Tris." He tells her but is sure she isn't listening. "You'll be able to come back to Dauntless in the future.

"That is if the Dauntless leader accepts her back into his faction or not." West scoffs and walks away.

Ignoring his comment, Tobias continues to calm down Tris, hoping the rest of her life isn't full of this.

Even if the rest of her life is like this, he thinks to himself, there's no way I would ever leave her.
