Chapter Thirteen
Karamatsu sighed tiredly as he pulled back the chair in his office at his desk, turning the computer on as he sat down. Grabbing his mug of hot coffee, he sipped on it as he awaited for the computer to load.
Heart heavy with worry for Ichimatsu, Karamatsu pulled a notepad and pen out of his desk drawer. As he flipped it open, he came across an old letter he had meant to give to his younger brother.
"This is..." Karamatsu muttered, staring at his neat handwriting. "my apology...? I thought I gave this to him..." Quickly, he ripped the note out, putting it in his drawer.
The computer's screen lit up brightly, showing that it was loaded and ready to be used.
Karamatsu pulled out his keyboard and mouse, furiously beginning to search for the illness his brother had been cursed with.
There were thousands of results when he searched, "illness where you get worse and worse until you finally die", but none of them were what Ichimatsu seemed to have.
"I could kill that Todomajo..." Karamatsu spat, lifting his coffee mug to his lips, taking a huge sip as he continued to search through all of the results.
An hour passed on by, then another, then another...
Yawning, struggling to keep his eyes open, Karamatsu forced himself to stay awake, turning up the brightness on his computer's screen.
"Do it for Ichimatsu..." Karamatsu thought, reading over an article on another website he had found.
The article's title said in bold letters, "What if there was another world where we could come in contact with a happier and healthier version of ourselves?"
"This is..." Karamatsu muttered, feeling less sleepy. "This is what I need!"
Karamatsu scrolled down, beginning to read the article silently.
"Up until recently, less than one percent of the population in Japan has come down with a serious illness. No doctor has been able to find a cure, leading others to wonder if one could possibly even exist. The few who have had this illness never made it through, dying in less than two years.
The few patients who are still alive, dying each day, claimed that it started with a severe migraine that perpetually grew worse.
These patients have completely lost faith in their doctors, beginning to search for their own remedies.
In the past, it hadn't been confirmed that there is a world beyond the one we dwell in, but when one of the dying patients traveled a long way with a friend, their friend returned alone. They claimed to have gambled with an unknown god, granting their friend a better life in another world.
The exact location in which this strange god lives in is currently unknown, but it IS known to be found in blizzard conditions on the tallest of mountains in various locations.
There is still hope for you, if you happen to have this illness! But only few may enter this world that is a mirror copy to the one we currently live in."
Karamatsu felt a tear run down his cheek as he stepped it of his office for a moment to check on his brother.
"There's still hope for you, Ichimatsu!" Karamatsu thought as he entered the living room, his heart about to explode with excitement and happiness.
Leaning over his sleeping brother, Karamatsu planted a soft kiss on his forehead, smiling warmly.
"Even though it hasn't been a long time at all, if I could just save you, Ichimatsu...I think that will make me satisfied with myself. I still feel guilty for never being there for you during our childhood. I never realized how alone you were up until I moved away from home. If it's too much to ask, Ichimatsu, please forgive me...because I truly am sorry. I love you," Karamatsu thought, still watching his brother. "I know you can make it."
