chapter 1: All Boys' School?!
Blin held her breath in anticipation for the satisfactory 'snip' of the scissors to release her hair from the tight ponytail.
Her hair dresser smiled at Blin through the mirror satisfied with her work after Blin's hair fell above her shoulders hugging her freckled cheeks."Another one down." She said brushing the silver locks off her slick apron.
Blin stared at her new haircut shocked to see how much her profile surprised her without her long silver hair draping her figure stoping around her lower ribs.
To any other girl cutting eight inches off may have been a big deal, but to Blin it was just freeing. She liked how the shorter cut gave her an edgier look and her nose a bit sharper. It allowed her light green eyes to pop and opened a door to a pallet of more dramatic maekup. "The shorter the cut, the thicker the eyeliner" is what her best friend Casmine would say.
She got up and brushed herself off handing her hair dresser a five dollar tip while making her way towards the cashier.
"My my, you look like a beautiful young lady. A new haircut for the new school year?" A tall man asked receiving the twenty Blin had handed him while tapping keys into the register to retort her change.
Blin smiled nicely unflattered by the man's words wishing he would hurry up. She knew this man always hit on the younger women that walked into the salon and she wanted no drawn out business with him. "Thank you. And yes I am college this semester but the haircut was just for fun."
He nodded placing the change in her hand wanting to further the conversation but Blin sharply turned away through the salon's doors.
As she walked out she picked up a newspaper sitting in a basket near the door.
She walked towards her red mini van and sat in the front seat skimming over the words.
'Another one of those rich tacky trade schools.' She thought while tossing the paper onto the seat next to her and driving off. When she got home her college admittance papers should be there. She had stayed up all night sick wondering if she would get into Yale, or Princeton.
Blin had a nearly perfect G.P.A. but it wasn't like you could tell. From the way she acted to the people she hung out with you would figure she was your average highschool dropout.
She pulled into the driveway of her small, empty, apartment she had just moved into.
She walked over to the mailbox and a single white envelope sat there.
She sighed and brought it into the house surprised to see her four friends already there.
"Jeff, Casmine, Thea, Quin, what are you doing here?" She said smiling.
"We are here to see if you got into college girl!" Casmine said laughing.
Blin smiled and looked back down at the envelope. She tuned out her friends saying they loved her hair and why her house wasn't decorated etc.
'It's not the end of the world if you don't make it in Blin. There are so many colleges that want you.' Blin thought to herself.
She closed her eyes and ripped the top of the envelope open. The letter was short, and she was sure that's never a good thing.
Her friends went quiet and stared at the rectangular paper she pulled from the envelope. She allowed her eyes to scan over the small printed letters and her friends could tell from the creases in her smile turning into a frown, she hadn't gotten accepted.
Blin took a deep breath and tossed the paper onto the ground. She couldn't cry over something so simple, not infront of the people who know her for not letting things get to her.
She put on the same nonchalant face she always did when she was hurt but didn't want to show it.
"There are other colleges." She said after a few more seconds.
Quinn put his hand on Blin's shoulder in attempt to comfort her. "Why didn't you get in? Your G.P.A. is nearly perfect?"
Blin sighed, bitting her lower lip forcing the tear that threatened to roll down her cheek to remain non present.
"It's a money thing. That's all." She replied. It was true. She didn't earn the full ride scholarship, no matter how perfect her grades were there were certain things she couldn't erase that turns some colleges off, things she regrets.
"Okay, Princeton isn't worth your time. What about Harvard?" Thea asked.
Blin shook her head remembering the absurd reason why they denied her. It didn't make sense why they had to lie about it.
"They didn't want me." She said allowing her voice to choke.
Casmine embraced Blin into a hug. Growing up was scary. She remembered how much Blin had struggled to get her own apartment. Her teachers wouldn't put in a good word for her which made her job searching even more difficult.
"I don't have the money. Maybe college, won't work out as I planned. Maybe online college is better, I don't know." Blin said releasing Casmine.
Jeff shook his head. "There are millions of colleges that are options." He had a peice of today's newspaper in his hand and raised it infront of Blin's face so she could see. "Ever looked at this school? My aunt is the vice principal."
Blin squinted her eyes in the direction of the paper. "I've seen this school before.....Oh yeah. I saw this paper at the Salon. And no way, that's an all boy's school there's no way I'd want to go there."
Jeff nodded looking back down at the paper thinking. "You want to graduate and get a good education and be a top soccer player? Even if this is an all boy's school, pull a Mulan and get in there." He said.
Blin brushed off his words and stared at the discarded envelope. "Why don't they want me? Was the past really that important?' she thought.
"I don't know," Casmine began. "maybe trying out Jeff's school could work, B. I mean, Jeff could get you in for free, and it is the number one college right now. It doesn't have a lot of kids, similar to a highschool format, but at the same time a great learning environment." She said loosening her high puff.
Blin sighed in disbelief they were talking about this. She wasn't desperate!
"Guys! Are you forgetting the fact that this is an all BOYS school?!" She snapped at them furrowing her eyebrows.
Jeff rolled his eyes. "I hate to say this Blin. But your parents cut you off, you can't afford another gap year. Look at us, we are all in college. You are here, practically a genius, waiting for the 'right opportunity' to get into college with a twelve year old's salary! You aren't going to get yourself anywhere if you just sit here! I'm offering you one of the best colleges- for free I might add- because I know you can handle it! Don't be picky, please take this opportunity and get the education you deserve." He said.
The rest of Blin's friends nodded in agreement. "Yeah, but I'm not a boy."
"Well, you've already got the hair cut down." Casmine said. "What do they call those things....a man bun? Yeah, you could have one of those!" She said fidgeting with Blin's hair.
Blin shook her off. "Okay, so I take the opportunity. I don't have to pay?" She asked uneasily.
"Not a dime. I'll tell my aunt everything. She'll be totally cool with it." Jeff said reassuringly.
Blin sighed and stared into the mirror hanging on the wall. She never wore much maekup, chapstick and mascara was the key. She also didn't understand why they had a gender restriction but it was none of her business. She looked down at her attire and frowned.
"I couldn't wear this to class." She said tugging softly on her black skinny jeans and Addidas sweatshirt.
"Oh yes you can. But because your face is very feminine we may need to "exaggerate" your boy clothing. Something that screams 'I'm a hardcore dude!" Thea said.
"Yeah, yeah! And it should have provocative women graphic tees, and foul language!" Quinn said
Jeff rolled his eyes. "Thea, Quinn, settle down. Are you all forgetting this is basically a royal school? There are uniforms, dorms, and other casualties. Don't worry about clothes. And you're hair? We might need to cut it a tad shorter, midneck maybe? The bangs can stay."
Blin shook her head. "This is ridiculous, and there's no way I could keep this up."
"You are right, you know. There is no way a person like you could go in there and get the job done." Casmine said.
"Hey!" Blin snapped at her.
"I'm just saying." Casmine shrugged. "Since the night didn't turn out the way it was supposed to, let's eat snacks and play truth or dare, we can talked about college later."
Blin sighed and gave up. Sure she had plenty on her mind but she guessed this was good to take a break and just relieve herself of some stress.
They sat in a circle on her floor carpet like they did at her old house when they were in highschool and played. There was nothing really interesting they could do, it was just fun playing around.
Casmine gathered most of the snacks around her unashamed of her appetite and spun the bottle after four previous rounds.
The bottle slowed to a stop, pointing directly at Blin. "We've played for at least two hours. Let's watch a movie now?"
"Sure. After this dare." Casmine said earning a grunt from Blin.
"I dare you to go to the all boys' college." She said before popping a dorito into her mouth.
Blin sat up shocked. "You can't dare a person into going to college!"
Casmine rolled her eyes. "Sure I can! Look B, it's free, it's the education you've always wanted, and maybe you will find a boyfriend there and get over our eighth grade teacher." She said casually.
Blin's face turned a bright red, making her freckels scattered on the bridge of her nose toward her cheeks resemble tiny drops of blood.
She crossed her arms in embarrassment and sighed. "Fine. I'll do it. I'll regret it, but I'll do it. It's the only option left before I give up. I don't know how much more rejection I can take." She said shifting uncomfortably.
"About college or Mr. Wilton?" Thea teased.
Blin rolled her eyes and flicked on he TV. They had forced her into a college and it would be really difficult. The college was all the way across the country and it was for the gifted, rich, or royal. She guessed she was in the 'gifted' category, but she wasn't exactly sure.
Jeff came back into the living room with a beer can in one hand and his phone in the other. "You're in. My aunt says you start Monday. " He said smiling.
"Monday?!" Blin replied in disbelief.
"I have three more weeks of summer!"
Jeff shook his head. " This school starts early and ends late. The next semester starts Monday, and if you are absent the first day, you are out!" He said.
Blin grunted in realization she'd have to drive starting tomorrow morning to make it to Los Angeles by Monday. "It's all so sudden." She said.
"What about my house?" Blin asked.
"We'll get it all covered." Thea said.
Blin sighed and allowed her posture to slump against the sofa. An all boys' college? Could I really dress up and keep this going? What if I don't make the soccer team or fail my classes? And I know I won't get over Mr.Wilton.
A/N: so that was the first chapter! Sorry if it was boring 😐, I needed some sort of intro, I often find starting off a book is the hardest part. But, it will start picking up soon!
