All Because of One Jade Flower
This is a piece I wrote for the Dreamland Bottled Dreams Anthology for their favourite romance trope prompt. Mine was 'enemies to lovers'. The original link is https://www.wattpad.com/1191164629-bottled-dreams-an-anthology-collection-all-because
At some point, I will definitely flesh out Xiao Jing and Feng Yi's love story to a full size novel, but for now please enjoy it in its chibi form!

Warnings:
BL. Slightly NSFW. Mature as there is sexual innuendo, references to sexual arousal, and they touch each other's upper bodies in the process of searching each other.

Zheng Xiao Jing ground his teeth as soon as he reached the main door of Suyi Hall because he saw something that made his stomach cramp.
Of all the days he could have arrived, he had managed to do it on the same day as his adopted sister, Zheng Wei Wei...and to make things worse, she had arrived first. Even though everyone in the hall was concealing their identity in some way, there was no mistaking his sister's arrogant stride as she sauntered towards the mission boards with her team of meatheads.
How did she get here so quickly? Xiao Jing silently fumed. I was too careless! As the legal heir of Jade Forest, I cannot let her get the Thousand-year Plum Blossom jade.
He was about to pull his hood further down over his head, but the air shifted just behind him.
"Oi! Are you stupid? If you're going inside, then do it. If not, get lost!" grumbled a huge man, who deliberately barreled into the boy's shoulder as he brushed past.
Xiao Jing stumbled at the contact, causing a jade longevity pendant to slip out from under his collar. Swallowing his temper, he put on a charming smile, and stepped to the side with cupped hands and an apologetic bow. Although the smile hurt his face, he straightened very gracefully.
"So sorry, Senior...but the door isn't meant for someone of your...stature..." he said silkily. "Perhaps it would be better for your health to indulge a bit less...?"
"Eh?" the man grunted, swinging around. "What did you just say...?!"
But of course, Xiao Jing had already side-stepped the fellow; and in the time it took for the burly man to register the insult, he had already made it halfway down the hall.
"W-Where did that little brat go?" the man bellowed.
His companion only shook his head.
"Forget it. Didn't you see the jewelled forearm guards he was wearing when you bumped into him? Only people from Jade Forest have them. The brat isn't someone you want to mess with..."
Haaah! smirked Xiao Jing, as he stuffed the jade pendant back under his collar. At least some people still have respect for Grandfather...
Turning his attention back to the boards, he wove through the crowd, picking his way towards the largest one at the very back of the hall.
It was just before midday and all kinds of people were lining the counters: cultivators looking to improve their skills or obtain elixirs; merchants looking to buy or sell strange, rare things; skilled smiths offering rewards for obtaining materials; and assassins looking to find their next kill. As long as an item could be bought, sold, traded, or stolen, it could be exchanged through Suyi Hall...for the right price.
As Xiao Jing moved closer to the end, he heard a small snort from somewhere in the balcony level. Curious, he glanced up, green eyes scanning left and right. No one else in the hall seemed to react, but he was sure that he'd heard it.
Which means I was the only one meant to hear it...
The boy cocked his head and concentrated. Closing his eyes, he carefully stripped out the sounds, one by one, until he finally zeroed in on a balcony just to the left of the main board. Staring at the curtain, he could sense the gaze behind it.
It should be the Hall Master... thought Xiao Jing. His lips lifted slightly as he nodded a curt greeting.
Observing from the balcony level, the person behind the curtain was indeed the Hall Master, Rong Xi.
What a cocky brat!
Even from afar the Hall Master had noticed the boy's pendant. There was no need for him to see it up close to know that one side was carved with a qilin, and the other side with a phoenix.
I never thought I'd see a pendant like that again. It looks like that old fart from Jade Forest has been hiding something good from me. Interesting.
The Hall Master smiled.
Although the upper part of the boy's face was covered by a mask, it did nothing to conceal the delicate texture of his milk-coloured skin, the elegant curve of soft pink lips, or the clean lines of his jaw. Now that the boy's hood had slipped down, Rong Xi could see light brown hair secured in a loose braid that trailed down past the boy's hips.
Rong Xi casually wondered what it would look like spread out in bed.
Green eyes with a cascade of light brown hair and a body as slender as the willow...even a blind man can see that the heir of Jade Forest is an incomparable beauty.
Charmed, Rong Xi waved a languid hand and a servant stepped forward. He leaned towards him and whispered a few words in his ear. Having received his master's instruction, the servant went down immediately.
"You're doing something unnecessary again...Won't it cause him more trouble to be singled out like this?" sighed the masked guard standing in the shadows next to Rong Xi.
The Hall Master laughed.
"The boy has something I want. Does it make you jealous?"
The guard only harrumphed in response.
"It'll be fun...just wait..." Rong Xi promised, as he smiled like a satisfied cat. Turning back to the hall below, he saw the boy looking over the largest mission board.
Stretching almost the width of the hall itself and rising almost as tall, the last mission board was covered in plaques listing out requirements, the object to be obtained, the details of where to find it, and the compensation. All the requests were of course anonymous, and Suyi Hall was well known for keeping it that way.
Now...where is that mission plaque? Xiao Jing wondered, teasing his lower lip with his teeth.
"Little Master...this servant gives greeting," said the person who suddenly appeared at his elbow.
"Oh!" Xiao Jing exclaimed, bowing automatically.
The gold banding on the uniform clearly identified the man as an upper-level Hall servant.
No way! thought Xiao Jing, looking cautiously towards the balcony.
"Little Master, the Hall Master wishes to pass along his personal token to you," said the servant. Presenting it with both hands, the servant held out a jade token with a red tassel. Xiao Jing bowed as he carefully received it, noting the character "Rong" carved on the front.
"With this token, the membership fee is waived, and you may have first pick of any mission on any board you choose," said the servant. "Which shall you have, Little Master? This servant will fetch it for you."
There was instant uproar around Xiao Jing as the servant had not bothered to lower his voice or take him aside.
The murmurs of the crowd rose, full of incredulity and envy.
Surprised, Xiao Jing felt blood rise in his face, but he kept tight control over his emotions. Though he knew that the Hall Master was testing him, it only made him more determined. He didn't intend to disappoint his grandfather...and any opportunity was still an advantage, no matter how frivolously bestowed.
"I've come for the Thousand Year Plum Blossom jade," he said calmly.
"Hold it! I object!" cried Zheng Wei Wei, as he knew she would. "That mission has already been given to us!"
She strode up to him and shoved the mission plaque in his face. She then turned and held it up for everyone to see.
Oho! Who is this? thought Rong Xi, as he watched from above. Taking a melon seed from the bowl beside him, he flicked it with one finger. Moving with the force of the man's qi, it punctured the curtain, skimmed past the side of Xiao Jing's face, and hit Zheng Wei Wei square in the wrist with an ominous crack.
"Aagh!!" she cried, clutching at her newly shattered wrist, clearly shocked.
The mission plaque flew up from her hand, and with a grim smile Xiao Jing snatched it out of the air. She's lucky that isn't her sword hand...he thought.
There was dead silence in the hall.
"Do you have anything else you want to say?" he asked, coldly.
The look that Zheng Wei Wei gave him was filled with loathing, but since the Hall Master had made his stance clear, there was nothing more she could do except file a formal complaint. Since Suyi Hall was not easy to move, she'd already lost her chance.
"Just wait, Zheng Xiao Jing! It is many li between here and Nanhe town! Don't think this is over," she hissed. Waving at her subordinates with her good hand, she said: "Let's go!"
The boy watched her stalk out and glanced once more at the balcony.
"Well...we'll see if this is a blessing or a curse..." he sighed with resignation, as he waved his hand over the small plaque. Immediately the assignment came up as a magical projection, giving him all the related information. According to the plaque, the current carrier of the Thousand Year Plum Blossom Jade was one Feng Yi of Yinfeng Pavilion...and just as Zheng Wei Wei had said, he would be stopping in Nanhe town.
Though he was less eager than before, Xiao Jing bowed to the balcony and left.
From his seat above, Rong Xi grinned.
"Send the shadows to ensure that nothing too serious happens to him..."
His guard snorted with disdain, but grudgingly went to do his master's bidding.
****
It was evening, and Feng Yi of Yinfeng Pavilion was walking down a street in Nanhe town with rather mixed feelings.
Although his best friend, Rong Xue, had insisted it would be fine, he still felt apprehensive about this trip. After all, his master had entrusted him with delivering a very rare piece of jade to Jinlan sect. Delicately carved into the shape of plum blossoms, the Thousand Year Plum Blossom jade was definitely a worthy engagement gift for the newly named successor, Miss Shen Hua. However, Feng Yi still felt that this assignment was a little bit odd. Since his Senior Brother Feng Ming was her fiancé, he should have been the one taking care of it...
"You know, Brother Feng...if you sigh like that again, I'll assume you're missing a lover," Rong Xue teased as they walked back towards the inn.
Feng Yi was about to retort, but then they ran into the problem that had been plaguing them for a few days now. Apparently Nanhe town wasn't used to accommodating young men as dashing as Feng Yi and Rong Xue, and the town's young women had taken to following them like chicks after a hen.
Of course, the girls could hardly be blamed.
Feng Yi was tall and dark haired with blue eyes and a heroic air. He carried his sword with the natural stride of someone well trained in martial arts. Rong Xue, on the other hand, was blond and blue-eyed, and exuded a flamboyant elegance that spoke to his ridiculous wealth. Both in their mid-twenties, neither was hard to look at.
Rong Xue, who only cared about the pursuit of beauty, had quite unabashedly encouraged the women, much to his companion's consternation. As a more discerning person, Feng Yi was only just tolerating it, while his friend was eating up the attention like there was no tomorrow. This of course had created a unique opportunity for Xiao Jing, who'd been following them for the last few days. Relying on his slight frame, he had decided to disguise himself as a woman.
"Have you come again, my dears?" Rong Xue grinned at the gathering crowd. "Shall we invite them for a drink, Brother Feng?" he asked, nudging his companion as the women burst into giggles.
Feng Yi glared at him, but then stiffened abruptly when a brash young thing slipped her arm into his, pressing herself to his side. Other than her pretty green eyes, her face was covered with a veil. Dressed in a vibrant red and green dress typical of the western parts of the kingdom, her mid-riff was daringly bare, and her slender hips were accentuated by the swinging motion of light brown hair.
"Come," the girl whispered huskily. "I know a good place..."
"Let go," Feng Yi said coldly, brushing her off, but he'd apparently pushed her with too much force.
Being a gentleman, Feng Yi immediately regretted it, and reached out to halt her fall, but then his instincts snapped into overdrive as he realized the body in his arms didn't feel quite right. Fully alert, Feng Yi blocked the delicate hand that slid up his waist.
"Rong Xue! It's a beauty trap!" he grunted.
"Hmph, you wish!" snorted Xiao Jing from beneath the veil, shifting his shoulder to avoid Feng Yi's open palm strike.
Had he been any slower, he would have been hit full on in the chest and no doubt coughing up blood. As this exercise had only been meant to test the waters, Xiao Jing flitted backwards, opting for a strategic retreat.
However, the sound of a sword being drawn made him swallow.
Crap! he thought.
With one kick of his foot, Xiao Jing leapt backwards onto a bridge rail, and then up onto the roof of a building across the canal.
"Rong Xue! Can you lend a hand?" Feng Yi shouted over his shoulder, about give chase.
However, his friend was completely mobbed with women and waved his hand with a "I can't be bothered" expression on his face.
Feng Yi said something impolite under his breath and sheathed his sword with a disgusted clack.
"Don't bother," said Rong Xue as he cleared the women away with a honeyed excuse. "With her level of qinggong, she's probably on the other side of town by now."
"Why can't you be more serious about this?" Feng Yi sighed.
"Since I'm not the one with the task, what's there to be serious about? At any rate, if that was an attempt to steal from you, it was far too clumsy..." said his friend nonchalantly. "Hardly worth your concern..."
Feng Yi sighed in irritation.
"Come on...Let's just go back to the inn. I'm sure there's a jar of wine calling your name," Rong Xue grinned, putting an arm around his shoulder.
****
It had definitely taken a good meal and more than one jar of wine to put Feng Yi back into a decent mood, but even after that he didn't let his guard down. When he turned in for the night, he put his sword next to him in the bed and lay down fully clothed before pulling the quilt halfway over himself.
In the hour just before dawn, his vigilance was rewarded when he heard the window creak open. From the weight of the footfalls moving towards him, Feng Yi felt that it must be a young man.
Throwing the quilt aside, Feng Yi thrust the naked sword towards the intruder's face.
CLANG!
Lunar blades! thought Feng Yi in astonishment as the masked youth brought his wrists together, directly blocking the sword with wickedly sharp blades that had suddenly sprouted out of his forearm guards.
Jade Forest's Lunar blades are legendary...this is no ordinary brat!
The blades had been hidden within spatial gems on the guards and had been summoned at will.
Conversely, Xiao Jing thought: What a devilishly quick sword!
Taking care to avoid the next blow, the boy hopped up onto a small side table. Spinning the tiny table with his feet, he travelled the length of the room, cleverly avoiding the sword as he circled the table away with lightning-fast footwork...but Feng Yi was very determined and pressed sharply at every opportunity. Yet, even as their fight intensified, they were both at such a high skill level that their moves hardly made a sound...except when their blades met.
Yet, it only took one slip and the masked boy made a muffled exclamation as he lost his footing, twisting in mid-air as he tried to find purchase. He only just managed to put a foot down on a different table to keep himself from tumbling.
Feng Yi grunted at the boy's quickness.
Dammit! Xiao Jing thought as the taller man tried to kick the table out from under him. Agile as a cat, he simply spread his legs out in a perfect split. Unfortunately, that put him in an even worse predicament as the position landed his junk right over a burning candle that'd been swept onto the floor.
"Whoa oh...haaa!" Xiao Jing gasped. Dammit!
Feng Yi grinned as the boy hastily reached to cover his balls.
"Cooked eggs are good too..." he laughed, swinging his sword ferociously.
"Who cooks eggs? Your entire family cooks eggs!" Xiao Jing retorted, bending backwards as the sword swung right over his nose. Flipping, he kicked his foot up, and booted the candle right at the swordsman's face.
Schwing!
!!!!!
Xiao Jing choked off a gasp as he skidded back. The sword blade was so sharp and the movement so swift that the candle had not only split in two, but the burning wick had been split, sending two flames floating past the dark-haired man's face. Unfortunately, the arc of sword light had also split Xiao Jing's mask in two.
The pieces clattered to the floor.
Now that it was gone, Feng Yi confirmed that it was the green-eyed person from before, and as he had suspected, it was a boy...albeit a very pretty one...to the point that he would have been quite appealing if they were meeting under different circumstances.
"Good sword!" the brat remarked, clearly undeterred by the close shave.
"You still have the mood to joke?" Feng Yi breathed, bearing down on him.
"What is life, if you can't have a good laugh?" the boy asked, shrugging as he swung his weapons into a defensive position.
Despite himself, Feng Yi felt a moment of grudging admiration.
Clang!
The three blades shivered against each other, ringing with force. Yet, even with their hands fully engaged, both men were using their feet to kick and block, trying to find any opening to use to their advantage.
What Xiao Jing could not make up with strength, he made up with speed. Twisting, he managed to kick is opponent's wrist, causing the sword to fly up and embed itself into the ceiling. Feng Yi leapt up to retrieve it, but he was stopped by a foot hooking over his ankle, yanking him back down.
Retracting the lunar blades, Xiao Jing grabbed the other man's lapels and pulled the robe open, revealing a rather muscular chest. With a grimace, he reached in to grope around, but he couldn't keep himself from blushing.
"Oi! W-Where are you touching?!" Feng Yi blurted in startlement. Eyes widening, he made a grab for the boy's wrist. They both grunted as their wrists slid against each other, back and forth, as they blocked each other's attacks in an unrelenting and furious dance.
"Where the hell is it?" Xiao Jing gritted in exasperation. "I don't want to be touching you either!" he grumbled, still blocking as they fought for control.
"Shameless brat!" growled Feng Yi.
"Who's being shameless? We're both men. I've already searched your entire room. If it's not here, then it's directly on your body...don't tell me you put it somewhere...weird...?" Xiao Jing groaned.
It was Feng Yi's turn to blush, and he unintentionally slapped his hand over the offending mouth, which of course gave Xiao Jing the opening he wanted.
Searching around in the loosened robes, Xiao Jing skimmed his hand down the other man's taut belly, and then realized that there was a storage pouch tucked into a pocket sewn into the sash.
HAH! Found it!
Xiao Jing grinned under the fingers still clamping his face, yanked out the pouch, and shoved it into his own robes.
"Y-You...!" Feng Yi burst out.
About ready to explode with temper, he shoved the boy's smartass mouth, throwing his head back, but once again a foot hooked around his ankle, causing both of them to tumble onto the bed.
"Huh?" Xiao Jing huffed as he fell forward onto hard muscles, choking when he realized he was straddling the man's thighs.
W-wait...what's with this position...?
The swordsman stared up at him, dark hair in a messy cloud and mouth open in a pant.
Xiao Jing's own mouth dropped open, and then he was appalled when he realized that the unfamiliar feeling in his stomach was a shock of desire.
They both froze, staring at each other, but then Feng Yi seemed to win over his loss of composure, and flipped the boy flat onto his back. He bucked heavily, but both wrists were unceremoniously slammed onto the bed over his head.
Yanking, Feng Yi exposed the boy's chest, but he was distracted by the extremely fine jade pendant hanging from a red cord on the boy's neck. Fascinated, he stroked a finger down the cord, over the pendant, and then right down the heaving sternum.
This pendant...
Unaware of what crossed the other man's mind, Xiao Jing shivered when his skin prickled at the touch.
If they weren't in the midst of struggling like this, Feng Yi might have taken the time to enjoy how soft the skin was and how pink the nipples were...like two small cherries adorning the boy's chest.
Xiao Jing twisted, but his opponent was much bigger and had all his weight on him, holding him so intimately that all he could do was make a strangled noise. Feeling a wave of panic, he squirmed as his body was pressed down in the most intimate places.
"Stop it!" the boy cried, as the other man's hand continued to graze over his skin.
"I'm just returning the favour," Feng Yi chuckled, finally rescuing the pouch containing the Plum Blossom jade. "And I'm also taking this as compensation," he said, snapping the cord on the boy's jade pendant. "Now, you little brat, get out! Next time, I won't show you any mercy."
Unexpectedly, the boy's eyes became watery, and his body slackened as if he'd completely lost his will. With a muffled sound, he turned his face to the side.
Oh dear. Is he crying?
If someone had come in at that exact moment, they might have misunderstood what was happening. Feng Yi groaned to himself.
I don't think I've ever met a thief like this...You'd think I was the one in the wrong...
The little brat was either very inexperienced, very innocent, or both. Although the lunar blades were deadly, he'd felt no killing intent. In the end, all things considered, the boy probably didn't count as a bad person.
Feeling somewhat sorry for him, Feng Yi swung his legs off the slender hips, and sat on the side of the bed as Xiao Jing sniffled.
"What? You enjoyed it so much, you want me to continue?" the older man teased, folding his arms over his chest.
Jeez, thought the boy. I thought this guy was a block of ice, but he's actually a pervert...well, whatever...
With his face still turned away, Xiao Jing sniffed loudly, covering his eyes with one wrist.
Seeing this, Feng Yi started to feel a little bit bad for him.
"No...I'm just ashamed. I've not only failed to get the Plum Blossom jade, but you took the only thing that I have left of my mother," the boy said very quietly, still covering his face. "It's...It's meant for my special person..." he mumbled, sounding quite embarrassed.
Feng Yi's fingers spasmed reflexively over the boy's jade pendant.
Sighing, he reached over, and very awkwardly patted the boy's shoulder.
"How about this? We can...Gaahhhh!"
Leaned over as he was, Feng Yi was wholly unable to avoid the knee that came smashing into his gut. Completely winded from the blow, he keeled over onto the bed, gasping like a fish out of water.
Xiao Jing didn't spare him a single glance. Having achieved his goal, he retrieved the pouch and fled. His own pendant would have to be retrieved some other day.
Dammit...and I was beginning to like that brat! thought Feng Yi as he staggered to his feet, body aching.
Next door, having listened to entire episode, Rong Xi went back to enjoying his tea.
And things were going so well... he thought.
At that moment, there was a shout as the young boy rushed out the front of the inn and darted into the street followed by a huffing, half-dressed young man who burst out with:
"Stop! Stop that flower thief!"
For a moment, there was only a stunned and awkward silence as the people in the street stared at the young man who was still gasping and clutching at the door post, and then they all burst into guffaws, holding their sides and laughing until tears streamed down their faces.
Realizing what he'd said, Feng Yi flushed red and white at the same time, and then his expression became thunderous as he desperately tried to regain some dignity.
However, a matronly woman in front of him could no longer hold back and said:
"You're such a big man...how could such a small person climb on your bed and steal your chastity!" she chortled. "Who would believe it??"
Feng Yi pinched the space between his brows with his thumb and forefinger, trembling with anger as they laughed at him. As he burned with humiliation, he silently vowed that he would find the boy and flay his skin off.
Coming out from behind his puffing friend, Rong Xue calmly handed him his outer robe and tapped his shoulder with a sword.
"You left in such a hurry, you didn't even take your sword, Brother Feng..." he grinned, trying not to laugh. Instead, he flapped his fan open and said: "I suppose it won't do any good to explain that the clever little brat really did steal your flower..."
Feng Yi sighed, and his shoulders dropped.
"I was supposed to deliver that thing to Miss Shen. It's an important matter between clans...What will Master think if I don't retrieve it?"
"Well, I guess you'll need my help to get it back?"
"Looks like it..."
"Ennn," smiled Rong Xue. "Well then, let's not waste any more time..."
****
Just as they were about to leave the inn, Rong Xue received the response he'd been waiting for.
Opening the letter that had arrived by dove, he frowned. In response to his: 'Brother, I found a Dongling jade you might want...' his brother, Rong Xi, had actually written back with a curt: 'I've already claimed that jade...so leave it alone.'
Rong Xue made an irritated tutting noise.
"Bad news?" asked Feng Yi, as they walked towards the bridge one last time.
The blond shook his head thoughtfully, but then noticed that Feng Yi had turned to look at a boat moving slowly up the canal.
"It's him!" Feng Yi gaped in surprise, moving to the highest part of the bridge. "Oi! Brat, come here! Give me back what you took, and you can have your pendant!" he shouted.
The boy turned to look behind him and then planted a foot on the side of the stern.
"Come and get it," Xiao Jing shouted back, sounding petulant.
"Well then I'm keeping your pendant as a love token," shouted Feng Yi with a grin. "You have to take responsibility for what happened last night!"
Rong Xue made a face.
A love what...? He can't be serious...
Xiao Jing choked.
"Don't make it sound so weird!" he yelled indignantly.
"When we next meet, what shall I call you? My sweetheart? Darling?" teased Feng Yi.
"Shut up, you crazy pervert! My name is Zheng Xiao Jing!"
"I'm called Feng Yi. I promise we'll meet again soon," Feng Yi shouted back. "And next time, I'll make you cry for real..."
Xiao Jing let out a string of expletives while turning a bright red, which only caused Feng Yi to chuckle even more.
Rong Xue's frown deepened as he took in the expression on Feng Yi's face, deciding that he was feeling an unbecoming spurt of jealousy.
Well, no use getting angry...he thought.
Rong Xi's letter seemed to indicate that this Zheng Xiao Jing was a descendant of the royal family of Dongling. If that was true, then Feng Yi was on the opposite side of an irreconcilable blood feud since his family had been involved in their slaughter. Thus, in this lifetime, no matter what they came to feel for each other, Zheng Xiao Jing and Feng Yi could only ever be the bitterest of enemies.
Confident in that thought, Rong Xue decided he could afford to be patient.
