Chapter Twenty-Six

The boys stayed on in Vegas for a few days to record for the new album at Brave Music's own state-of the-art studio. Getting back to the flat without him felt lonely, so I headed straight to Charlotte's, where Kris had by some miracle managed to free up a night in his hectic social calendar to spend a night curled up with wine, gossip, and fussing over Charlotte and Erin.

The main topic of conversation was, unsurprisingly, mine and Noah's relationship. His appearance on The Geoff Colston Show was scheduled for that Friday night. He would land at six in the morning, have a few hours at home to catch up on sleep – or whatever else he might have fancied doing - then head into Central London to meet the rest of the band at the TV studio.

It had been decided that the entire group would be on the sofa with Geoff. Mikey would be fresh out of rehab and Brave had suggested it was the perfect opportunity to show the world his new, clean image.

Kris, Charlotte and I all agreed on one thing. We were nervous.

"What if he's not ready?" Charlotte had mused as she topped up my glass of red. "He's been through such a shit heap recently that I just don't know whether it's too soon."

Kris nodded. "And Noah," he said, raising an eyebrow, "Exactly how much is he going to reveal? Everyone knows Geoff seems to have a way of getting people to say things they never planned to say."

He was right. As a chat show host for over twenty years, Geoff Colston had a reputation for most of his interviews ending up in tears, hysterics, or shock revelations.

I tried not to think about how deep he would delve into Noah's former life as I took a long sip of my wine and shrugged in response to Kris' question.

After a couple of days rattling around the flat on my own, I finally woke up to Noah slipping into bed next to me early Friday morning. Having him home made me feel complete once more, and I snuggled into his chest as he wrapped an arm around my waist and pulled me in close.

"I missed you," he whispered.

"Missed you too," I replied, softly kissing his lips before snuggling my head under his chin and falling back to sleep.

It was gone lunchtime by the time we woke. After having some lunch and catching up, Noah jumped in the shower to get ready. Charlotte had asked whether I wanted to go round to hers to watch the show that night, but something inside of me was saying I needed to watch it alone.

To my surprise, Noah's speech at The Billboards had proved to be something of a hit online, with the majority of fans and gossip sites praising his words about how the boys had become his family. Rather than jumping to knock him down for dedicating his award to me, they ran with the idea of Noah being saved by whomever the mystery 'guardian angel' may be.

But, later that night, he would be revealing his full story. The truth about how he'd been forced to walk away from his own family and spend months alone on the street, before making the difficult decision to earn money the only way he could.

I didn't want to watch that truth being told from behind a cushion on Charlotte's sofa. In fact, I didn't want to watch it at all.

But I knew I had to.

The familiar opening credits burst onto the screen, a montage of famous faces that had appeared on the show over the years accompanied by the instantly recognisable theme music of The Geoff Colston Show.

With my wet hair braided down my back and one of Noah's old T-shirts on, paired with my comfiest leggings, I was a world away from the glamorous two young actresses who graced Geoff's sofa first to promote their new film. After a short interview with them, he welcomed out one of the UK's best comedians, currently doing the rounds in the chat show world ahead of his new stand-up tour.

Then it was time for The Ambition to have their slot.

Squeezing onto Geoff's famous red sofa, the interview began with a lighthearted chat about the new album; what fans could expect and when it was set for release. Then, like a hawk circling its prey, Geoff prepared to swoop.

"So," he began, sitting back in his chair and crossing one leg over the other, "I suppose we should also address some of the questions on everyone's lips."

The camera cut to Mikey, who shifted his body to rest his arm across the back of the sofa behind Noah. He looked well, all things considered. I guess rehab really was the best thing for him.

Geoff continued. "Mikey, to see someone so young in showbiz facing addiction is always heartbreaking. First of all, I'm sure we would all want to applaud you for seeking the help you so clearly needed."

The audience responded on cue with a round of rapturous applause.

"But let's talk about where it all started. With fame and success, the world at your feet, why did you turn to substance abuse?"

I nearly choked on my wine. Geoff definitely wasn't beating around the bush with this interview. I could only half focus on what Mikey was saying as I already began to dread the type of things Noah would be asked.

When Mikey had finished explaining himself, the audience applauded yet again as Geoff stood up from his chair, walked over to the sofa and pulled him into a hug.

Sitting back down, a tiny smirk appeared across his lips as he directed his attention to Noah.

"Now, as for you, young man," he teased, causing the audience to laugh. "We've all seen enough about your exploits to last a lifetime. I have to ask you, is it true?"

Noah matched his smirk with an assured smile of his own.

"Is what true?" he replied.

Geoff let out a small laugh and shifted forward in his chair. "It's been reported by various sources that, at one stage in your life, you were forced to sell your body for sex."

That time, I really did choke on my wine. The sharp, citrus liquid burned the back of my nostrils as it erupted through my windpipe.

Noah nodded slowly. "It's true," he replied, "But I had my reasons, and I'm no longer ashamed of who I once was."

"And what were those reasons exactly?"

With pain behind his eyes that only I could see under the bright lights of the TV studio, Noah began to recall his troubled past. He didn't go into every single detail, but it was enough to explain how he'd ended up on the streets without any contact from his family, struggling to survive until a rich, older woman came along and offered him a way out.

Geoff was attentive as Noah spoke. He seemed interested in what Noah had to say, willing to give him the floor and explain his side of what the papers had been saying.

It wasn't easy to watch Noah dragging up a series of painful memories, one after the other, on primetime television, but he spoke eloquently. He was open and honest. Not once did he make it seem as though he was a victim, instead he gave a frank and revealing version of the life he had once led.

"So, what was the catalyst for finally leaving that life behind?" Geoff asked, once Noah stopped to take a sip of water. "Was it the band getting a record deal? Or was it when you decided to go back to university?"

I snorted to myself at the memory of Noah and the boys being forced into what was possibly the briefest stint at university ever.

"Well, Geoff," Noah replied, a glint replacing the sadness in his pupils, "I'm happy to say it was neither of those things."

"So, tell me, what was it that finally made you walk away from escorting? Could it be anything to do with this 'mystery brunette' we've been seeing you with recently?"

Noah looked up at the audience and raised an eyebrow, causing them to laugh. With a knowing expression, he turned back to face Geoff.

"The 'mystery brunette' is called Abi, and she's the best thing that's ever happened to me."

As Noah beamed, the audience let out a collective burt of 'oohs' and 'ahhs' and Geoff clapped his hands together in glee.

"And is this Abi a... girlfriend?" Geoff asked, a smug smile plastered on his face.

"She is. It's been serious for a while now."

Geoff leaned over, putting on a stage whisper as he winked at Noah in dramatic fashion.

"Is it... love?"

Noah blinked slowly as he nodded, his dimple popping against the flushed pink of his cheek.

"It is. Abi showed me what real love is. Even with all my history, she taught me to look forward instead of back. Made me realise I didn't have to be paid by a woman in order to feel like I was worth something."

Supportive applause rang out around the studio as the live audience whooped and cheered the happy ending to Noah's story so far. I could almost see the weight lifting from his shoulders and I felt it lifting from mine as well. We didn't need to hide anymore. The world knew about me, about us. They knew Noah's full truth now, and it seemed they were on his side.

"So what about the rest of you?" Geoff beamed as he turned the question onto Alex and James. James playfully extolled the virtues of still enjoying the single life, while Alex couldn't have been a prouder husband and dad in the way he spoke about Charlotte and Erin.

Gesturing towards Mikey, Geoff raised his eyebrows. "And how about you, Mikey. Is the focus just on yourself and your recovery right now, or are you looking to find someone special of your own?"

Whether he was buoyed by the support that the audience had given to Noah's confessions, or simply ready to stand up and tell his own truth, Mikey's face relaxed into a comfortable smile.

"I think that, for the time being anyway, I'm going to put myself first and make sure I stay clean and healthy."

The audience once again erupted into cheers and applause. As they quietened down, Mikey held his hands together in a prayer position, tapping his fingertips against his chest to say 'thank you'.

Turning back towards Geoff, he continued.

"That's not to say that, if the right man for me came along now, I'd be against the idea of letting love in..."
