Although they're hardly an unknown bad, I wanted to make a chapter dedicated to the UK gothic/death-doom metal band Paradise Lost. 

 I first discovered Paradise Lost earlier this year when I was trying to find out what other gothic metal bands were out there besides the few I already knew. It took time for me to get into their music and I still haven't heard everything by them yet (they have fifteen albums), but they are very talented and worth listening to. 

 Paradise Lost was first founded in 1988, and what I found impressive is that almost all of their line-up has stayed the same in the past thirty-one years: vocalist Nick Holmes, guitarists Gregor Mackintosh and Aaron Aedy, and bassist Stephen Edmondson. The only member that's changed over the years is the drummer: their current drummer Waltteri Vayrynen, who has been with them since 2015, is their fifth official drummer. 

 The band's musical style has changed quite a bit over the years. They started out as a death-doom metal band, combining the sound and atmosphere of doom metal with Nick Holmes' death metal growls. But in the later 90s, they began going into gothic metal and rock, with Nick Holmes switching to clean vocals, and they even began adding some electronic sounds with the 1999 album Host. With their last two albums, The Plague Within and Medusa, it sounds more like they've gone back to their death-doom roots and combined it with their gothic metal sound.

 Basically, they're a great band with an long and interesting musical history. Bands such as Lacuna Coil, My Dying Bride, The Gathering, Moonspell, Amorphis, Katatonia and Cradle of Filth have all cited Paradise Lost as an influence on their music.
