Ranking Lacrimosa's Albums

Here I am with another one, this time the band being Lacrimosa. This might seem like a daunting task since they currently have thirteen albums, but I had already listened to most of their albums in full. For this, though, I took the time to listen to all of them and see which I thought were best, worst or somewhere in between. After listening to the music from each album, this is what I decided on:

13. Einsamkeit (1992)

This was Lacrimosa's second album, and the title means "Loneliness" in English.

The album isn't necessarily bad, but it's one that I don't really care much about. I'm not into any of the songs about it, and they've definitely done better.

12. Sehnsucht (2009)

This was Lacrimosa's tenth album, and the title means "Longing" in English.

For me, this one was a disappointment. I liked "A Prayer for Your Heart", "Call Me With the Voice of Love" and "Der Tote Winkel", but the rest of the album just falls flat. Anne sounds great as usual, but Tilo's voice suddenly sounds a lot weaker than on previous albums. I think just wasn't good compared to the other Lacrimosa albums from this decade (Fassade, Echos and Lichgetstalt).

11. Testimonium (2017)

This was Lacrimosa's thirteenth and most recent album, and the title means "Witness" in English.

To get straight to it, Testimonium is a very dull album. None of the songs truly caught my interest. Even Anne's solo wasn't that good, and for me her solo songs are usually one of the highlights of each album. It sounds like Tilo was maybe trying to do a reverse of earlier albums like Elodia by starting with hope-sounding songs like "Nach Dem Sturm" and then ending it in a dark place with "Testimonium", but it did not work well in this case.

10. Angst (1991)

This was Lacrimosa's first album, and the title means "Fear" in English.

I do not think Angst was all that good, but I put it this high because it wound up being more memorable than the ones below it. This album is very weird and has a creepy sound to it. I will not be forgetting the opening organ music to "Seele im Not" anytime soon.

9. Satura (1993)

This was Lacrimosa's third album, and the last one as Tilo's solo project.

Far as this one goes, I love "Crucifixo" and I like "Satura", but other than that I didn't find the rest of the album very interesting.

8. Inferno (1995)

This was Lacrimosa's fourth album, and the first with Anne Nurmi as a member of the band.

I found this album to be pretty good, and I think this is where they started to become what they are now. With this one, you can hear them going in more of a rock direction but also has orchestral sounds that weren't heard on previous albums. The one kind of bad thing about was the song "Copycat"; it's not a bad song, and I think it was probably meant to be a song that stood out from the rest, but it completely interrupts the flow of the album and doesn't really fit in.

7. Revolution (2012)

 This was Lacrimosa's eleventh album.

I would say that this the most metal-oriented album Lacrimosa has put out so far. It was good and I liked the songs. It's not one that really stands out from the rest in any big way, but it's worth listening to.

6. Lichgetstalt (2005)

This was Lacrimosa's ninth album, and the title means "Creature of the Light" in English.

I originally had this one a little lower, but I wound finding the songs on this to be a little more memorable. I like "Lichgetstalt", "My Last Goodbye" and "The Party Is Over", and I found the rest of the songs to be interesting too.

5. Hoffnung (2015)

This was Lacrimosa's twelfth album, and the title means "Hope" in English.

Hoffnung came as a surprise to me. Of the albums Lacrimosa has put out of the past decade, this is by far the best one. It starts out with a fifteen-minute, mostly-instrumental, mostly-orchestral opening, which is very like Tilo to do. The album is a nice mix of orchestral and metal sounds. "Thunder and Lightning" is among my favorites and I found a new favorite in "Kaleidoskop".

4. Echos (2003)

This was Lacrimosa's eighth album, and the title means "Echoes" in English.

I didn't think too much of this one at first, but I think this is actually one of their best albums. It starts with a classical overture that runs for almost thirteen minutes, and once you get past that the rest of the album is a mix of classical music and gothic rock/metal sounds. This album has more of a focus on the classical side of things than the rock and metal side, but is still a great album and probably one of their best.

3. Elodia (1999)

Elodia was Lacrimosa's sixth album. It is a concept album and rock opera about a love being that has been overwhelmed, falls apart, but ends on a note of hope.

Elodia was the first Lacrimosa album I ever listened to in full, and it is absolutely one of their best works. The album is divided into three parts: the first part tells of a love that has been slowly overwhelmed and begins to change; the second part is the separation; and then the third part is a requiem, "Sanctus", and the album ends with "Am Ende stehen wir zwei", which means "At The End There Are The Two Of Us", which leaves off with some hope for the lovers in the story. This album is amazing from beginning to end.

2. Fassade (2001)

This was the seventh album, and the title means "Façade" in English.

I was absolutely hooked on the opening track "Fassade - 1. Statz", which has got to be one of the best album openings I've heard so far. After that came the popular "Der Morgen Danach", followed by "Senses", Anne's solo for the album. This was an excellent order to get me hooked on the album, and I think I will always be of the belief that this is one of their best.

1. Stille (1997)

This was Lacrimosa's fifth album, and means "Silence" in English.

This is it, the album I believe to be their best. This is when they truly went into gothic metal, and it includes classic Lacrimosa songs "Not Every Pain Hurts" and "Stolez Herz" and other great songs. Stille does apparently have a connection to Inferno, which was the previous album. I haven't quite figured it out yet, but they do have very similar themes so it does make sense that there would be a connection there.

If you do decide to listen to any albums by Lacrimosa, I believe Stille is the best place to start.

There we have it. If you do happen to be a fan, let me know if you agree. As far as more of these chapters go, I've thinking about doing The Vision Bleak, Coronatus, Epica, Amaranthe, Sirenia. Anyway, let me know if you have any suggestions on who to do next.
