17: Minho

I meet Jane's scared brown eyes and I nod. We run towards the double doors, knowing only full well what will happen if the Grievers are unleashed.

Clarine doesn't understand the situation but she does her best to keep up with us. A few people stand aside to let us pass and automatically look behind for any obvious threat.

There isn't any at the moment. Not yet anyway. If Tommy, Teresa and Minho don't manage to destroy the Grievers, they'll only realize the danger when it's too late.

We slow down. I tell Jane to take Clarine and Mikey whilst I start ushering people towards the doors. Jane seems reluctant to leave me behind but she nods runs off with the other two, with Clarine pestering her for answers, since she's doesn't know what's happening.

I grab a woman's arm and try to tell her and a group others about the Grievers and how dangerous they are without panicking them too much. It doesn't work. She waves me away and goes back to her conversation with her friends. I only catch the words,' kids' and 'stories.'

I groan. I suppose there was little chance of them believing me anyway. They have no idea what I've been through. I look back at the Grievers. Tommy and Teresa seem to be doing well. None of them have escaped, but I can't see Minho.

Someone grabs my arms from behind. I fight the urge to cry out, and try to free myself, but whoever the person is they are much stronger than I am, and too experienced. My assaulter grips my hood and jerks it back, whilst swinging me round to face them.

I lower my head so they won't recognize me.

"Newt?" he says, his voice full of doubt," Please don't let this be some random shank that I've just done this too. If you are, then I'm so sorry."

I look up at the person I last saw and shouted at in the Crank Palace, and see him take a step back.

"Minho..." I say my own voice a whisper.

"Newt?!" he punches me painfully in the arm," Shuck it you slinthead! I thought you were dead!"

He grins, beaming all over.

"If you thought I was dead, then why did you bloody do that?"

"I'd recognize that weird accent of yours anywhere."

"Thanks, Minho."

"You're Immune?"

"Looks like it."

We embrace, but not too hard. I know he can feel how bruised and battered my body is and how thin it has become.

"What happened?" he asks, as we break apart.

I shake my head," I'll tell you later. Just promise me one thing."

"Seriously? I've literally just found out you're alive,"  Then seeing my sincere expression, he says," Ok, what is it?"

I take a deep breath," Don't tell Tommy anything about this. He needs to keep his focus and get these people out of here. You didn't see me, ok?"

He looks surprised, but at that moment there's a piercing scream and whatever he's about to say is cut off.

We look round. A Griever has escaped and is slaughtering people as soon as they get down the chute. A surge of fear rises through me.

"Minho..." I  say.

He turns to me," Ok. Sure. Whatever. I won't ruin the surprise. Now get the shuck out of here."

He starts moving people towards the doors. I pull up my hood once more and do as he says.

Once I'm through the double doors, followed by a few narrow hallways, and in another room, I immediately begin looking for Jane, Clary and Mikey. It's not easy- it's congested. People are everywhere and all around me children yell out for their parents.

A girl with brutishly-short reddish hair, sharp blue eyes and who's in her early teens comes up to me with a small boy and girl who are standing nervously behind her.

"Have you seen a woman with mid-length brown hair and green eyes?" she asks," She wears a pair of cracked glasses which are held together with tape."

"Sorry, no. But if I see her, I'll tell her I saw you. What's your name?"

"She doesn't know me. My parents aren't Immune. " she says and I can tell that she has burdened a lot of grief and responsibility for a long time," But these two are her kids. They're called Klyde and Bo Geld."

"Right, Got it," I say and pause," My parents aren't Immune either. I'm looking for my friends. Do you want to come with me?"

She shakes her head," No. I'm good, thanks. I prefer being on my own." She indicates her head to someone behind me and I spin round.

A man and the woman she has literally just described is sprinting towards us.

"Bo!" they yell," Klyde!" The two children run eagerly into her arms without a backward glance, and she hurries them off.

The girl nods at me. "Bye."

And she starts walking away. It's only now I notice the numerous scars along her arms and the edge of a blade poking out of her right hand, which is closed in a fist, ready for action.

Maybe this girl does know how to survive after all.

"Wait!" I shout after her," What's your name?"

She turns round, eyebrows raised and looks at me," Best not to say. One less person to worry about. Take care. I hope you and your friends make it."

And before I can respond, she disappears into the crowd.

I resume my search for Jane, and try to focus on what I need to do.

That girl can take care of herself, I firmly tell myself, I don't need to worry about her.

I find my little group at the top of a stairway, where lots of people have gathered.

"You made it." She says, relieved. I smile and bend down to pick up Mikey.

Even from here, we can still here the explosions destroying the Maze, and the lights are repeatedly flickering on and off.

Tommy arrives, shaking all over, with Brenda by his side. Anyone who looks at him can tell how worn out he is.

"We need to go up," says Brenda. Tommy nods and together the pair of them led us up many flights of stairs. Clarine is panting beside me. Running up them is tiring, and all I can think about is how Tommy must be feeling.

We catch our breaths at the top, and we are lead on again. I lose count how many hallways we have to run through, or how many times we have to go down or up a staircase. I desperately hope the Tommy and Brenda have memorized the way and aren't just leading us blindly on.

An explosion hits us. Unbelievably, it's much worse and bigger than all the ones before and we are thrown like ragdolls onto the floor. I can actually see the whole building shaking, and my world spins around me for several seconds before it finally stops.

I get up groggily and pull Clarine to her feet. There's dust and bits of ceiling all around us. This place isn't going to last long.

"Everyone ok?" Tommy asks, his voice echoing along the hallway.

"Yeah!" A girls voice calls back. I look round and see that it's the red-headed girl who refused to give me her name.

She must be used to living life on the edge. She grinning like a maniac with the excitement and thrill of it all, as if it's all just a game.

"Keep moving! We're almost there!" Tommy shouts in response.

The girl cheers, ignoring the confused and bewildered looks that people are giving her, and we begin to move again.

Tommy leads us into what looks like a maintenance room. He then goes through a door, and we wait for him to come back, making space for new people coming into the room.

I wince, remembering that Jane is claustaphobic. It's already a small room.

Tommy runs back, hope written in capital letters all over his beaming face.

I don't need to hear what he has to say to know what's through there. We're literally less than 200 meters away.

Through that door is the Flat Trans.
