10: Action
After we turn a few more corridors, I see Tommy up ahead, being wheeled away from a side room, at a speed I don't think's possible. I break into a limping run, Jane just behind me. My friend's turned another corner, and we follow. Then Jane trips, and her Launcher goes off. The gun shot rings out through the building, and there are shouts. I grab her arm, pull her to her feet, and we set off again.
As we turn another corner, we almost collide with five guards, all wearing various degrees of body amour. They shout to each other, and as one raise their guns.
"We're Immunes," yells Jane, her voice quavering," We're valuable."
The two guards on either side lower their weapons slightly and turn to look at the guard in the center. He's different from the others; he wears a couple of colored stripes on his shoulder. Obviously their leader.
"No time for tests," he barks tersely, " We're on Red Alert, and we've already got enough Immunes to do about five lots of Trials. Shoot 'em."
I push Jane behind me, as they all raise their Launchers again. I raise mine, and shoot their Leader. Surprisingly, it manages to penetrate his body amour, and he collapses onto the floor, writhing in pain. I remember what Chancellor Paige had told us. Specially modified. She must have designed them especially for this moment. The other four guards look a bit stunned as they had been relying on their leader, but then the moment passed. And they're-focused on their targets again-us.
I throw myself to the floor, just as they began to shoot. I manage to knock to out two by shooting them in the feet. That's what else makes these Launcher guns special, it didn't matter where you shoot them, it gets them just the same.
I scramble to my feet, and see that Jane must've got the other two. We break into a sprint again. Shooting as we run. We come across a few more lots of guards. This time we don't hesitate, and shot them immediately.
At one point, I get knocked to the floor by a guard, who's about to get me, but Jane shoots him and helps me up, and I know I will always remember that moment.
We run into the room, where they have Tommy. I scream his name, just as they inject Tommy with some sort of drug. We're too late. I yell, and Jane and I opens fire.
The staff are shot down left, right and center. Then I fall on the floor. I've lost him. I've failed. Just like I've failed to stop the grievers getting Alby.
Jane's grabbing me by my shoulder.
"Newt!" She's shouting , "Come on! We've got to get into the Maze, and lead the Immunes out ourselves." Of course, the plan still goes on, no matter if Tommy's dead. I feel numb inside.
A side door opens, and in steps Paige. She takes in the scene. Me on the floor, Jane trying to get me back up. She gives a small tranquil smile, and places the note next to Tommy.
"He's dead," I say, my voice hoarse," It's no use."
"No, Mr. Newton. It's not over yet," she replies, still calm," He's unconscious, that's all."
"What?"
"They've put him to sleep that's all. Now I advise that you and Miss Seacole, head over to the Maze as quickly as possible."
