"Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" would benefit from having horses, being used as a pun to strange creatures horses would add some hilarious twists to the story. Horses are generally friendly and gentle creatures, they are also very curious just like Alice. Since the novel takes place in the Victorian Era horses would be the ideal form of transportation. Also over the years people have conjured make belief animals that are based on horses. Making horses a perfect animal to incorporate into the story.
Lewis Carroll the author of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" was a writer, mathematician, Anglican cleric, photographer, artist and poet; this caused him to have many puns or word plays in the novel. As seen in chapter three Alice mistakenness tale for tail and not for knot. The word horse can easily be used as a pun as well. Alice would easily confuse horse with hoarse without a moment's hesitation. Perhaps she would be conversing with a horse and coach man and she says to the coach man 'your voice sounds rather hoarse' and the coach man would reply with ' no he's the horse' while pointing his thumb at the horse 'you don't hear me neighing, my voice isn't horse at all'. Or perhaps the coach man would say 'I need tea for my throat to help my hoarse voice' and Alice would say confused 'your horse doesn't seem to have a sore throat or a voice'. These are just two out of a thousand ways that you could use this pun; had he used it there would have been a few more laughs.
Another way horses could make "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" is transportation. As we know, the story takes place in the novel takes place in the Victorian Era; during this time all royals including the female ones were able to ride and during 1865 the year the book was published many women rode in four-wheeled carriages. In chapter eight there is a procession, a procession is many people or vehicles moving forward in an orderly fashion. Royalty often rode in processions instead of walking; the queen and king of hearts could have been riding on white horses with red hearts painted on or in a carriage being pulled by the same kind of horses. With the traditional mad flare of Wonderland perhaps the cart would pull the horse instead of the other way around. Horse transportation could add a logical and illogical twist to the book.
In chapter nine we meet an imaginary creature, a gryphon. Gryphons are not the only magical creatures that could have been used in this narrative; Lewis Carroll could have also used creatures that are very similar to our four legged, hoofed friends. He could have brought unicorns or pegasi into Alice's adventure. If she met a pegasus maybe she would get to have a pegasus eye view of Wonderland. Another character we are introduced to is the Mock Turtle. What if Lewis Carroll introduced a Mock Unicorn, a very sad horse who claims he lost his horn. Perhaps in his day school he learnt how to do magic but when he became a mock unicorn and lost his horn he could no longer cast any spells.
Alice wakes up with her head in her sister's lap in chapter twelve when the queen says "off with her head" to which Alice replied with "who cares for you? You're nothing but a pack of cards!" causing the cards to attach her which woke Alice from her slumber. However, if Lewis Carroll had added in a horse he could have had one extra laugh. For example if it had been a horse that had attached Alice instead of the cards she could have woken up to being kicked in the leg by a very young calf. Followed by her sister asking if she was alright and commenting on the long snooze Alice had, as for what happens next we already know.
Horses could add so much to the story weather it is in the form of puns, transportation, mythical creatures or an interesting wakeup call they would definitely cause a laugh. Children want stories with conversations, pictures and humour horses could make the children have about ten more fits of giggles. This is why "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" would prosper from having horses, being used as a pun to a pegasus or mock unicorn horses would add some amusing twists to the story.
