Chapter 10
I woke up in my guest bed of the Red Queen's castle; looking towards the window. It was still dark outside. Groaning, I swung my feet over the side of the bed and stood up, slipping me feet into some slippers I found by the bed, and made my way out the room.
The hallway was darkly lit; the lights flickering every few seconds.
Alice!
H-Hatter? Please tell me that's you...
No, this is Patrick. Yes my dear, I'm here.
Shut up Hatter. Where are you?
Why, I'm in a room my dear... He chuckled in my head.
Hatter...
Alright alright, I'm downstairs, past the basement. You're going to need a key in order to make it all the way down here my dear. It's been proven quite difficult to obtain...
Please Hatter, don't underestimate my skills...
Sorry. Be careful my sunshine, please don't hurt yourself.
I will try Hatter, I want you to try and make yourself out of the cell you're in.
How did you know--
I'ts common sense really, what's below the basement..?
Yes yes.. now stop proving your points and get us out of here.
Alright alright, then shut up and let me get the keys.
Goodbye, my dear.
Alright, now where is the key?

Making my way down the hall and spotting several guards; I sneaked around corner after corner.
"Oof!" I exclaimed.
Looking up at one of the guards, his intimidating looks only made their way to my eyes and seemingly burned through them.
"Oh I-I'm so sorry Miss!" He bowed his head and crouched on the ground.
What is he doing?
You don't have to sneak around, Alice. You are the queen's guest, remember?
You couldn't have mentioned anything earlier? Seriously?
You're right, I could've, but it's been quite entertaining knowing that you're going full-on ninja around the corners of this confusing palace. He giggled in my head.
I scoffed then smiled, not replying to his statement
"It's alright, really." I smiled at the guard to reassure him he didn't have to be so formal. It's not like I bite or anything.
Alright, well now that I know I don't have to sneak around anymore, I casually walked the halls, nodding my head at every guard I made eye contact with. Eventually, I realized I had no idea where I was going, taking random corners and down and stairs I found. I was only watching for the guard with a belt holding an elaborate looking set of keys.
Darting around a corner, I immediately stopped in my tracks and threw myself back around the same corner, tripling over the edge of the wall, sending my body crashing to the floor. A loud skid sounded between the cloth of my dress and the rough concrete floor of the halls just above the dungeon.
In front of me was an apathetic looking guard. He was sitting in a wooden chair. It looked like he was waiting for something. For what, I'm not sure.
"Don't think I didn't see you there, young lady." The guard chuckled a little bit. "C'mon out, I don't bite."
Yes cause girl sneaking around, who winded up getting caught. Like hell I'm walking up voluntarily. Think Alice think. I mean I could walk up and just tell him who I am, I could play insane and say I'm playing hide and seek with the ghosts; but even if he did believe it, he'd just send me back to my room. I'm not starting this goose chase over. He seemed like a nice person, but then again, all he has to do is get me over there; he could be pretending. Slowly and cautiously I walked around the corner as confident yet conserved as I could. I didn't want to look stuck up, but I didn't want to walk guilty either.
"Aren't you the Queen's new pet?" He laughed. Excuse me? A pet? I am not a pet. I'm a person, thank you very much. If anything, you're the pet because unlike you, I don't have to follow the Queen's orders.
I put my hands on my hips. I take back my previous statement. I'm gonna bite. "Excuse me? I am no one's 'pet.'" I spat the words at him. He put his hands up in defense.
"Whoa whoa, jeez girl sorry; but ya kinds are." He was leaning forward in his chair leaning his elbow on his knee, his chin resting in the palm of his hand.
"Oh? And, lemme see," Leaning on one leg, I folded my arms and held a straight face. "Which one of us is forced to follow her orders?" He leaned back in his chair. "I'm a guest, which means I have priority at the moment." I held my straight face. I wasn't trying to be rude, but as a child would say, he started it. He really did. And I'm not about to let this 'pet' walk all over me.
"What do you want." He didn't even pose it as a question, rude much? But anyways, now he knows who's in charge; now I can get the key.
"Give me the key so I can get through the gate." I answered sternly, my voice confident and "matter-of-fact." His eyebrows raised, and his lips slowly but hesitantly curved into a smile.
"HA!" His laughter was uncontrollable. "You're hilarious!" His eyes were teared, leaving streaks down his face. I stood my ground, looking straight at him with no sign of acknowledgement. "Oh, you're serious." His laughter quieted down and eventually stopped. "Well, kid," I narrowed my eyes at him in bother. "I'm afraid I can't do that," He chuckled again. Holding out his hand to the height of his shoulders, which were just barely above my height in comparison. "You have to be this tall to ri-" He was cut off by silence, as if the surrounding air had in itself made it's way out of his lungs. Quickly, he moved his hand from the air to his back, the other across his chest towards his shoulder. He bent down on one knee.
"And, what is going on down here?" A familiar yet quite annoying voice asked. She walked gracefully, one foot in front of the other; yet she had a malevolent way of moving. Her feet covered by her long red dress that made her butt look like it was bigger than her head (which is quite large). The guard spoke before I could open my mouth.
"You're guest would like me to grant her access to the dungeon, I was just informing her that she must have permission from you, your majesty." He tried to sound firm and respectful, but the only tone of voice I heard was fear.
"Hm." She closed her eyes and raised her head, as if to tell him she was ignoring him and disregarding his words. The Red Queen walked towards him and took the keys from the small wooden table that sat beside him. What used to hold the keys and an oil lamp, now only held the oil lamp. "Here you are my de- OH MY GOODNESS!" She wailed. "WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO YOUR DRESS?" I assume she's referring to the gaping hole I have in the fabric that should be covering a part of my leg.
"I only ripped it a little bit. I will sow it as soon as I finish my exploration." I made sure to hold a childish voice, one where I seemed innocent and adventurous, sending the message it was only going to get worse.
She sighed and held the bridge of her nose with one hand, the other placed on her hip. "Well my dear, I'll be sure to have another one put in your room."
"No it's alright, I can fix this one. There's no need to dirty another one." I reassured.
"If you're going to be staying here, you must look your best all the time." She responded, shaking at my apparent ignorance in this particular topic, and gesturing her hands to show off her own dress.
I agreed, not wanting to waste any more time or breath on her erroneous argument. She handed my the keys and turned to the guard. "You will let her in, and you will let her out. Is that made clear?"
"Y-Yes your majesty." He replied, still leaning on one knee with is head bowed at her presence. As soon as she left our sight, he rose and shot me an irritated look. "I don't want to let you in, and I most definitely don't want to let you out." He sighed. "But I must, per the Queen's request. So be quick, and don't cause any trouble." With that I unlocked the steel-barred door and made my way through. He propped the leg of his chair against the bottom corner to keep it from swinging open.
Finally. Sorry that took so long. Now, where in Wonderland are you?
I am in one of the cells to the right of the entry door. Though, I am a few levels below you, my dear. I am not sure how many.
There aren't any holes in the doors to see in; How will I know which one you will be in?
Follow your instincts, Alice, you will know exactly where I am when you get here. And I will know when you get here, as well."
"If you say so..."
Whoops. Did I say that out loud?
The Hatter laughed in my head. Be careful, my dear, we wouldn't want anyone to hear us, now would we?
Making my way through yet another path of confusing twists and turns, I found two staircases. One going left and down, the other going right and down. The must lead to two different wings; meaning the two don't connect at any point. I have to choose wisely.
Hatter! Left or right?
He sighed. What did I just tell you my dear? Follow your instincts.
So I did exactly that. Walking down the left staircase, the already dim lights got even dimmer. There was barely any left at this point. As I approached the bottom of the staircase, there was what seemed like an endless row of cells along both of the walls. How on Earth am I expected to find his cell if I can't even see three feet ahead of me?
Focus, Alice. Use your instincts. You will know when you get there,
Thatta girl Alice, stick with your instincts and you'll never go wrong, I promise.
There. I knocked as the wave of recognition hit me. He was on the other side of this big metal wall of a door. There was a knock in return.
Very good, Alice, you have found me.
