TWO

June 9, 2016
Patient: Alice Kingsley
Date of Birth: September 21, 2000
Reason for Containment: Schizophrenia (?)

"STOP! LET GO OF ME!" A girl around Alice's age struggled with the the security guards, refusing acceptance of what  would be for the next few months, or maybe even years, of her life.

'She must be new,' Alice thought to herself, 'isn't that lovely.'

"Miss, please, you have to come with us" said one security guard. "No! I won't!" said the girl, "I didn't do it! Please! You have to believe me!" The girls begging turned into crying which turned into anger which then made her turn to violence. Two guards were already struggling to keep her calm, but once hell broke out inside her, the guards focused more on trying to put her into her room whether she liked it or not rather than trying to keep her calm. The guards were hurt with almost visible bruises that were brought by the girl, but they have felt worse. It wasn't the first time a patient had tried to fight back. It wasn't long until one more guard had pinned the girl down to the floor in the middle of the hallway and placed her hands behind her back. Helpless, she was put into her cell with the door locked shut. Alice and Mr. Hatter, on the other hand, had their doors opened and unlocked.

Alice had already had her daily checkup with the doctor, and her daily nap too. She had noticed that Dr. Stein was beginning to keep the door open, but she did not mind.

"You have to get me out of here!" The girls yelling was heard from outside of her locked room. Alice turned to the direction of the voice, then to Mr. Hatter. "Maria Gilmore," Jefferson explained to Alice, "convicted of mass murder. The girl insists she wasn't the cause. That someone else did it. Someone in her mind. Doctors say that she's just as much as a freak as the rest of us." Alice nodded in response, giving a thank for the information. He was the only one she trusted. It was when she first got there that he made her feel normal.

"And how do you know that, Mad Hatter?" The voice came from yet another girl: Michelle Kay. She stayed in the room to the right of Alice's, room 628, and had been put in there not for the same reason as Alice or Maria, but for the reason of the fact that she had obsessive compulsive disorder. According to Dr. Stein, Alice was put there because she "has a case of schizophrenia." She assumed that Maria had been put in there for the same reason as her own, given the information by Mr. Hatter.

"Because," said Mr. Hatter turning the direction of his head to now face Michelle's, "I know things. Not like you. Butt out."

"Is anyone going to tell me what's going on?" Maria demanded. She was put inside the room to the left Alice, in room 632, and had not been satisfied the whole two minutes she was housed there.

Before anyone had time to reply, Alice heard a voice coming from the corner of her room. "Tough crowd, eh?" Henry was there again, and to ensure her reputation, Alice shut her door.

"Oh look! There goes little Alice off to Wonderland again" Michelle taunted from the outside of her room. Alice ignored her; she had better things to do than worry about what other people, especially Michelle, thought. It was the second time that week that Henry had come to visit Alice, which surprised her, because Henry usually only visited her once a week. Lately, though, he had been arriving more frequently.

"You have no idea" she sighed.

Henry chuckled at her. Though he was only a figment of Alice's imagination, she had the feeling that he loved her deeply.

"So, there's a new girl?" Henry questioned.

"I suppose," she replied, "Mr. Hatter says she's down here for the same reason I am." Alice had never told anyone, not even Henry or Mr. Hatter, why she was in the hospital. Not much interest sparked through the halls.

"Alice, you never really told me why you were placed here."

"It will have to stay that way, Henry. I'm sorry"

Henry sighed in response. "Will you ever tell me?"

"I fear that I will have to say no, though my heart tells me to say yes." She sat on her elevated bed with her back against the high part of the mattress.

"I have to go."

"Henry, I'm sorry I truly am, but please-"

"Bye Alice." Before she had time to finish her sentence, Henry had vanished. But she did hear her door opening to reveal Dr. Stein's entrance. He took a seat in the spiral chair placed in the corner Henry was placed in. She never really noticed it there. Henry was always standing.

"Hello, Alice. It seems like you and Jefferson and Michelle had some interaction earlier. But I didn't hear you talk. Maybe you can explain to me what happened?" She didn't stare at him, nor did she reply. Instead, she stared down at the while sheets on her bed. "You know, Alice, I've heard what people have said about you. I don't know how you feel, but just because a character in a movie has the same name as you, it doesn't technically mean you two are alike. You can be different, and that's okay. But nobody will ever know anything about you if you don't talk. Please, Alice."

She was motivated by what Dr. Stein had said, that was for sure. But what stopped her was that she didn't know if she was ready to open up yet. Henry didn't give her much time to talk, and she was in a talking mood. About three minutes had passed, then five, then six. Dr. Stein had finally given up and excused himself out of her room. That was, before he heard her speak for the first time in months.

"You see, doctor," she said, "that's the reason why I don't talk. I don't want anyone to know anything about me."
