18|NOBODY'S SIDEKICK

From the window of the plane, Ally watched the wing reflect the moon in the sky. As the plane dipped slightly, all she could do was listen to the hum of the rotors and hope that Bucky Barnes wasn't dead. Peggy had managed to call in a favour and Howard Stark had picked them up in one of his planes, agreeing to help the infamous Captain America.

"You know, you three are gonna be in a lot of trouble at the lab." Steve mumbled, looking down at his hands.

Peggy raised her eyebrow. "And you won't?"

"Where I'm goin', if anybody yells at me I can just shoot 'em," Steve smiled slightly, looking over at Ally.

"They will undoubtedly shoot back."

"Well, let's hope it's good for somethin'," Steve ushered to his new strength. "What do you have in the bag Jones?"

"Speaking of that–"

"Agent Carter, if we're not in too much of a hurry," Howard interrupted from the cockpit. "I thought we could stop off in Lucerne for a late night fondue."

Peggy's cheeks flushed. "Stark is the best civilian pilot I've ever seen. He's mad enough to brave this airspace, we're lucky to have him."

"So are you two...? Do you...?" Steve fumbled with his words, his face slightly disappointed. "Fondue?"

Ally smacked her forehead, regretting all the times she should've spent on teaching Steve how to flirt. He was worse than anything she had ever seen, but it was slightly amusing. Peggy looked uncomfortable as she moved towards Ally and picked up her bag. "What was it you were going to tell us?"

"Don't tell Jojo."

"Oh no," Peggy's face dropped. "What did you do?"

Ally unzipped her bag, unveiling the sword she had been practicing with for weeks. Beside it, was the blue veil of what was left of the super soldier serum.

"Alchemy," Peggy stuttered in disbelief. "What did you do?"

"Erskine left the formula to the serum in my care. I mimicked the serum to the best of my ability but there was an explosion and the serum got into my bloodstream," she looked down at her hands. "I didn't mean for this to happen but it did."

"Ally–"

"I want to help," she firmly planted her hand on the blade. "I can help, I know I can."

"You're inexperienced. If something happened to you, Jojo would murder me," Peggy rambled, picking up the veil. "Why didn't you tell anyone about this?"

"It was too risky," Ally explained. "If someone had known that there was still a chance with the formula, the SSR would of been extinct by now."

"She's got a point," Steve spoke up. "What happened to her was an accident but she might of saved us all from another attack."

Suddenly, the plain tilted and everyone was flung into their seats. Steve pushed himself and stumbled to the door, Ally following behind him.

"Get back here!" Peggy shouted. "We're taking you all the way in. Ally, I can't let you go!"

Steve fascined his helmet onto his head. "As soon as I'm free, turn this thing around and get the hell outta here!"

"You can't give me orders!" Peggy gasped. "Ally, you aren't going with him."

"The hell I can't! I'm a captain!" he yelled back, wrapping his arms around Ally and her sword. "And damn right she is!" without giving Ally a second to really think any of it through or let Peggy scold him, they jumped out of the plane and straight to the ground.

Ally couldn't believe what she was doing. She was following the not-so-tiny kid from Brooklyn into a HYDRA base. Steve was swinging his shield left and right, sneakily making his way by the HYDRA guards while she followed. Ally had never been so impressed. Although she was sweating nervously, she swallowed her fear and followed the captain into battle.

"I need you to keep watch," he whispered, ducking behind a wall. "Can you do that?"

Ally looked down at her sword, the one she had very little knowledge about and only a few weeks worth of training with. "Shouldn't be a problem."

Her sword gleamed in the cool light. The sword was stained with blood and she almost wanted to vomit. Every person she had stabbed or injured wasn't enough to kill them, Ally couldn't kill anyone. She shuffled to the side and watched as Steve flipped himself over a railing and fought a few more HYRDA men. He returned shortly, unphased from his recent attack. "Come on."

The two swung down into the lower decks of the the bunker base and fought with many HYRDA agents before successfully getting the keys. Ally looked down below her and dropped the keys.

"Who are you supposed to be?" A prisoner called, referring to Steve.

"I'm...Captain America. Get out fast and give 'em hell. I'll meet you guys in the clearing with anybody else I find."

"Ally Jones?" Someone shouted from down below.

Ally squinted her eyes, trying to make out the blurry faces. "Quaker?"

"Ally!"

"Quincy oh my– thank god! I'm so happy to see you," she reached down to touch his hand. "I've gotta go find Bucky."

"Wait, who's the girl? Your sidekick?" Questioned another, glaring at Ally as she readied her sword in case there was an incoming attack.

"I'm nobody's sidekick pal," Ally snarled. "Come on Captain, let's go."

"Wait! You know what you're doin'?"

Ally and Steve looked at each other before Steve grinned. "Yeah. I've knocked out Adolf Hitler over two hundred times."

Ally followed Steve's pace without complaint. Her clothes and hair were slick with sweat and clung to her skin. Sweat rolled down her skin in thick, salty beads. Ally had begun to run very fast since the serum affected her but never this fast with that much determination. She could feel her heart throbbing inside her chest, her lungs felt like they would burst and her throat was so very dry.

They came into a long hallway, stopping themselves to catch a better look at the small man and tall woman stuttering in front of them. Ally squinted, her sword fascined to her. The tall woman looked at Ally twice before running, the shorter man following behind him.

"Holy shit," she said in disbelief. "That was Vic..."

"Vic from the diner?"

"Vic from the diner!" Ally confirmed, her eyes completely widened. "She's a HYDRA agent!"

"Sergeant James Barnes..."

Ally's head shot up to where she heard the sudden noise coming from. They began jogging over to the room, covered with experiments and torture devices.

"Of the 107th..."

It was Bucky, strapped down to a chair. Steve rushed over to his friend, completely appalled with what he saw before his eyes. Bucky was beaten, bloody and bruised. "Oh my god," He was so out of it, Steve had to shake him twice. Ally leant over him, watching as Steve tried to snap him out of his daze. "It's me. It's Steve," Steve told him, taking off Bucky's restraints. "It's Ally and Steve."

Too stunned to say anything, she immediately wrapped her hand around his and kissed it, multiple times. "Who did this to him?"

Bucky squinted, looking back and forth between Ally and Steve. "Ally? Steve?"

"Come on," Steve helped him out of the chair. "We got to go."

The euphoria going through Ally's body was enough for her to throw her arms around him, delaying the entire mission just so she could feel him next to her again. He hesitated at first, as if his love for her was all just a cruel dream HYRDA tortured him with.

"We thought you were dead." Steve explained, squeezing Bucky's shoulder as Ally released him.

Bucky looked down at Steve's change of appearance and Ally's sword. "I thought you were smaller, what happened to you?"

Steve shrugged. "I joined the army."

"This is what I was going to tell you," Ally exclaimed, wrapping an arm around Bucky's torso as they hobbled towards an exit.

"Did it hurt?"

"A little."

"Is it permanent?"

"So far!"

"Did this happen to you to?" Bucky looked down at Ally once more, watching his girl act like a soldier.

Ally nodded. "You aren't dead but we still need to make it out of here. If we do that, I can explain."

The trio turned a sharp corner as the HYRDA base began to explode, sending a frightening shiver up Ally's spine. Suddenly, a gush of pain jolted through Ally's body. She looked down and carefully touched the gunshot wound that ripped through her shoulder. She looked up at Bucky and Steve as their eyes made contact with a man across a bridge from them.

"Captain America! How exciting! I'm a great fan of your films."

She fell backwards into Bucky's arms, wincing and breathing heavily. "No, no, no."

"So Dr. Erskine managed it after all. Not exactly an improvement, but still impressive. I'm sorry about her, I really am but I cannot have a mini Erskine running around."

Steve looked down at Ally and then back at the man before them, striding up to him and punching him square in the face. Ally felt her eyes close, then reopen and then close again. Bucky fearfully squeezed her hand, covering her wound with his other. "Not yet Ally, you aren't dying yet."

"I knew what I was getting into when I jumped out of the plane–" she coughed, blood flooding her mouth. "To rescue you." the agony was too much and she kept telling herself to pass out.

Bucky quickly took a glance at Steve, who successfully blocked a punch from his opponent.

"You did rescue me and now I'm going to rescue you."

But she was already unconscious.

"Oh my god," He was so out of it, Steve had to shake him twice. Ally leant over him, watching as Steve tried to snap him out of his daze. "It's me. It's Steve," Steve told him, taking off Bucky's restraints. "It's Ally and Steve."
