Chapter Ten
Alanna had been working for the past two hours with the help of the two girls and anyone else who wished to help to make everything perfect. They were making around two hundred chapatis and that was a lot but Alanna was fast and she had all the help so it was easy. They had already arranged the fruit bowls for everyone and poured out the juice from the cans into the plastic cups and arranged them on the ladder thing made by the boys. There was lemon juice, orange juice and strawberry juice. Alanna had already made the juice in the morning and stored it in coolers so all they had to do was pour it out into the plastic cups and that was already done.
The other thing Alanna had made that morning was a lot of homemade pizza. It had been quite hectic but she made them especially for her schoolmates as a thank you for doing such a good job. The children center had an oven because they baked their own bread for consumption and sale to make extra cash so she had used it to warm up in the pizzas. It was now about eleven am and all the cooking was done and it was almost time to let the kids out.
Alanna was just laying out the pizza when she had gasps behind her.
"You made pizza." Ryan shouted excitedly and Alanna anticipated his next move so she blocked his path towards the pizzas.
"Yes I made pizza because there was excess flour as per my calculations. And no Ryan you cannot have any, it's not time to eat yet." Alanna explained and Ryan dulled when he heard he wasn't allowed to eat yet.
Alanna smirked victoriously at him and she saw him matching her smirk and wondered what he was planning. Before she could comprehend what was happening Ryan bent over and wrapped his hands around her waist lifting her up. Alanna was too shocked that he could lift her up to do anything but squeal. He then turned around with her in his arms so he was the one standing next to the pizza. He then set her down slowly before turning around grabbing two slices of pizza and running away yelling victoriously.
Everyone around them just chuckled at his antics while Alanna stood shocked that Ryan could actually lift her that effortlessly. Maybe he was driven by the need for food that's why he didn't even break a sweat lifting her. I mean what was that boy made of? Steel? He was always eating so he should be more fat than strong but he was actually quite well built though she hadn't anticipated he'd be strong enough to lift her.
She was still trying to wrap her head around everything when someone tapped her shoulder startling her a little. She was glad for the distraction before her thoughts drove her crazy. She turned around and saw Sophia looking at her with a concerned expression.
"You okay?"He asked her.
"Yeah I'm fine what's up?" She answered reassuring her friend.
"Oh the team we invited is here and I thought you'd like to come greet them with me." Sophia replied after assessing to make sure that her friend wasn't lying, it seemed like she passed the test.
"Of course."Alanna replied.
She took off her apron, gave the girls then final instructions on how to deal with everything before linking arms with Sophia and walking toward the gate. A white Van with all tinted black windows had just parked. It looked like one of those vans used to kidnap people just classier. The middle aged driver with pepper hair and a protruding belly got out followed by the young man seated next to him on the passengers side. The sliding door to the back opened and a couple of people came out one after the other of both genders.
The last person to get out of the car had Alanna screaming in excitement before she let go of Sophia's hand and took off in a sprint. Everyone was confused at first including the young lady to get out of the van last and they all looked towards Alanna's direction. The young lady matched Alannas excited screams before she took off in her direction.
They met in the middle of the field and engulfed each other in a very tight hug as both cried and laughed at the same time.
"What are you doing here? I thought you said you weren't a part of this team?" Alanna asked her sister Liz after they pulled away from the hug.
Elizabeth went to Maseno University where the Chapo Festival team were all students in. When Alanna had called her sister to ask her if she'd come she'd said she couldn't because she wasn't a part of that group. Alanna had hoped to see her sister but she gave her the bad news she swallowed the painful lump of not getting that chance. The two sisters hadn't seen each other since September the previous year because Liz had gone on a trip with her friends to Zanzibar and had stayed there over Christmas and new years. Instead of coming home she had directly gone back to school so it was definitely a long time to be apart from each other. The university was all the way across the country, a fifteen hour car ride away so it was impossible for her sister to travel home anytime she wanted and plane rides were super expensive.
"I know I said that but I called their chairman and he said I could tag along because a member couldn't make and there was space in the van. So here I am." Liz replied excitedly before they got into another tight hug.
The two sisters couldn't be any more different but their bond was unbreakable. Where Alanna was thick Liz was slim, Alanna had dark skin while Liz was more on the fair side, Alanna was tall while Liz was a foot shorter. Their differences were only physical though because if you looked at any other aspect of their life they were identical. They were both tomboys, loved food, movies, being indoors and family and had a small circle of trustworthy friends. The only other difference was that Alanna was into the culinary arts while Liz was into the literal arts. Everything else was the same.
"Please tell me you aren't leaving today." Alanna pleaded wanting to see more of her sister.
"Lucky for you we are leaving tomorrow evening. The team has another childrens home to visit tomorrow in the area so they will pick me up on their way back so you have me till tomorrow evening." Liz replied and Alanna screamed in joy.
"Thank you thank you thank you." She said over and over again while still embracing her sister.
They pulled apart after a few more minutes when they realized they were drawing too much attention towards themselves.
Sophia came forward and Alanna introduced her to Liz before she moved one to greet their other guests. Alanna couldn't get the happy grin off her face and neither could she let go of her sisters hand in fear that she'd disappear. Liz seemed to be in a similar situation.
Soon enough the introductions were over and the activities of the day started which first included getting the kids out of the room they were bring distracted in and onto the field. Their teachers had already explained to them what was happening and the order of events so that they wouldn't go all crazy and want to do everything at once.
As soon as the doors were opened they started rushing out excited as screams and squeals filled the place. You could see just how happy they were seeing everything including a bouncing castle, a trampoline and all the other cool stuff set up for them. Alanna felt her heart fill with joy that they could be able to do something so amazing for the kids. It would be just for one day but she was sure they would remember it for a really long time.
"Hello hello, is this thing on?" Sam asked through the microphone as he stood on the makeshift stage.
He had suggested or more like demanded to be the MC and seeing as he was the funniest and most social among the group apart from Ryan they all agreed.
"Saseni?" He greeted.
Hello.
"Poaaa." A round or replies went through out the whole place.
Hiii.
Sam smiled in glee at the response he got "Sasawa. Karibieni ndio tuanze hii siku yetu ya kujibamba."
Okay. Gather around so we can start off our amazing day.
Everyone gathered around in front of the stage as the other students helped to maintain the kids so they wouldn't wander too far.
"Nani ako tayari kujibabamba?" Sam shouted in an excited voice.
Who is ready to have fun?
"Mimiii!" The kids replied matching his tone and exceeding it.
Meeee!
"Fiti, lakini kwanza kabla tuanze kujibamba wacha tusalimiwe ma wageni wetu tukijuana. Sindio." Sam asked.
Good but before we begin having fun let's allow our guests to greet us as we get to know each other, okay.
"Eeeh." The kids replied
Yes.
Sam invited everyone on stage to introduce themselves one by one. They first started with the visiting team and they were all so nice and cheerful it set the whole mood. The kids definitely wouldn't be able to remember all their names but they would remember them for their character and that's what mattered. Even Liz got to say hello even if she had nothing to do with the day.
Sam then invited his school mates to say hello and introduce themselves. Alanna was the last to go because she wasn't too excited about talking in front of all those people but Liz pushed her forward. She quickly rambled out an introduction and a quick hello and jumped off stage.
"Huyo ametoka hapa anaitwa Alanna na ndiye anetupikia chakula ya leo kwa hivyo ukimuona mwambie asanti, tumpigie makofi." Sam said when Alanna got off stage.
The one who has just got off the stage is called Alanna and she's our chef for the day so when you come across her say thank you. Let's give her a round of applause.
Alanna blushed when everyone clapped for her and made a mental note to to make Sam pay for putting her on the spot like that.
"Sasa juu salamu zimeisha tuanze siku yetu." Sam shouted when the claps died down.
Now that the introductions are over let's start our day of fun.
The kids yelled excitedly before Sam hushed them down and began giving all the instructions. There were so many things to do and they definitely wouldn't be interested in the same things. All the kids were allowed to roam around and do what they wanted before they all joined together at one pm to eat before the fun continued afterwards.
There would be snacks being handed out at the time being and there was also ice cream and cotton candy.
The gang had really gone all out to make sure the kids had the best time that they would never forget. As soon as the kids were free to roam around everyone got busy managing their stations. Since they couldn't eat yet Alanna and Liz helped serve the ice cream and cotton candy as they caught up on everything even though they talked almost each day on the phone.
"Don't look but there's a cute boy who keeps looking at you by the face paint stand." Liz said in a hushed tone as she gave a little girl strawberry ice cream on a cone.
"Tall and kinda lanky?" Alanna asked already knowing who it was without looking.
"Yeah how did you know? Wait is he your boyfriend? Are you dating and didn't tell me?" Liz asked firing question after question.
Alanna's movement stilled on the mention of the word boyfriend. She turned to face her sister who was already looking at her with questioning and accusing eyes. She knew if she rambled out an explanation her sister would be onto her so she had to be calm while giving an explanation.
"First of all that's not my boyfriend and if I dated anyone you'd be the first to know. Second that's Ryan and you know him. His brother used to hit on you some while back."Alanna explained defensively.
"No way. That's little Ryan. But he's so tall and cute now, definitely hotter than his brother." Liz replied and Alanna laughed.
"Cool your jets woman he's two years younger than you."Alanna warned jokingly.
"So what? I could be his sugar mommy." Liz said wriggling her eyebrows making Alanna laugh some more.
"Sugar mommies have money and you're always broke so no you can't be." Alanna explained.
Liz stuck her tongue out at her sister "It doesn't explain why he keeps looking at you though?"
"He has this weird obsession with me. I don't know. Ask him not me?" Alanna replied.
"Okay I will. Hey Ryan why are you obsessed with my sister?" Liz asked out loud making Alanna jerk her gaze forward and came face to face with a flustered Ryan. She was too busy talking to her sister she hadn't noticed him walking over towards them.
Her mouth fell open and she dropped the cone she was holding, thankfully it didn't have ice cream on it.
"Liz!" Alanna warned slapping her sisters arm.
"Ouch don't hit me and you told me to ask." Liz defended.
"Don't mind my sister Ryan? Did you want anything?" Alanna asked.
"It's okay I don't mind. I'm obsessed with her because she's the most beautiful and amazing girl I know and to answer your question my queen I want ice cream." Ryan said answering both sisters at once.
Their reaction was very different. Liz had her mouth wide open in shock but with a smile on her face and Alanna almost face palmed but couldn't so she settled for glaring at Ryan.
"Ice cream is for the kids." Alanna replied.
"But I'm a kid, at heart." Ryan defended pouting.
Knowing he wouldn't give up she scooped him some ice cream and handed it to him. He took it with a smile and before Alanna could stop him he leaned over and kissed her cheek before scurrying off back to his station.
Alanna was used to his antics by now so she wasn't actually that shocked by his kiss. It had taken her by surprise but she was already used to him doing things like that. Two weeks ago she would have hit him for doing that but now she let him off the hook knowing arguing would get her nowhere.
"Explanation now!" Liz demanded still shocked by the whole exchange.
Since when was her baby sister into kissing boys and having crushes.
"I'll tell you everything later. For now let's have fun with the kids. I want some ice cream. Do we have any pistachio?" Alanna asked diverting the situation.
"Nice distraction. Ill let it go for now but you owe me a story later. I want ice cream too."Liz said and they started looking through the boxes in the freezer looking for the pistachio flavor.
Crisis averted from all the questioning, Alanna enjoyed the rest of the day with her friends and all the kids. Her food was definitely enjoyed by everyone especially the kids who loved all the fruits and drinks. Food definitely is a universal language that could unite everyone. All in all it was a very successful day because everyone had a lot of fun. It truly was the best thing to give back to the society. The more you gave the more you received because God always blessed a kind and giving heart.
