Her Own Baby

A woman with bloodshot eyes and scrawny arms ran in the darkness up to a trash can. She held a warm bundle in a dusty grey blanket. She smiled.

"I'm sorry but he would kill me if I kept you."

She deposited the swaddled babe in the can. A waiter with a buzz cut screamed when he saw her still form being swarmed by rats. He chased them away and pulled off the blanket.

It was a four month old baby with thin hair and gaunt cheeks. He thought she was dead but she cried.

"You want to live, don't you?"

His eyes were wet. He called the police after showing his boss the little girl. His colleague, Anne held the baby to her chest to warm her. The next day she was on the top of the headlines in every newspaper and journal.

She found a foster home and it was with a family who couldn't have children. They loved her dearly. They bottle fed her until 7 months. They took her to ice skating shows, kiddies' parks and classes for gymnastics and dancing.

She was a happy child and then disaster struck. It all happened one day when her parents were driving with her from her daycare centre, at six p.m. as the sun was setting.

"Aaaah!" the mother screamed.
The car's hood screeched and a metallic clang ripped through the air and the young toddler and her parents were exposed to open air.

"Hello," the toddler said.
There was a red-eyed monster leering at the little family. The woman shook in fear. Her husband battle hardened himself.

Rosalie was moping at a bad joke Emmett had cracked when they stumbled onto a young vampire feeding on a black haired man. His flaxen haired wife laid limp and bloody on the ground not far from the feeding girl.

She discarded the man. Her eyes set on the toddler with inky pigtails. Rosalie attacked the vampire and decapitated her.

"Babe?" Emmett said.
Why had she attacked for no reason?

She pulled out a crying toddler from the totalled car. Emmett stared at the child.
"Rose..."

"We can't leave her here..."
"But we can't take her either."
Rosalie glowered at her husband.

"Or you know we could just go home with her, who cares what I think."
Talking was one thing but Rosalie discovered Emmett wasn't the only one not for the child.

"Rosalie, what were you thinking?" Edward said ruffling his bronze brows.
"I was thinking she would die without us! She's only two!"

The child in question flushed Edward's BlackBerry down the toilet whilst he was arguing with Rosalie. He shouted at her and she screamed. All the women in the house were not on his side after that.

Why had he left it in the open anyway?

Renesmee was thrilled she had a new playmate. They played ball games together.
"What's her name, " said Bella to Rosalie.
Rosalie frowned and Bella assumed she had offended her.
"Did I say something?"

"No, it's just I realised we don't know her name...Edward so you think you can find out?"
Edward glared at the back of the girl's head.
"Need I remind you I cannot see anything there other than her present thoughts?" he said with a scoff.

“Why don't we ask her?” Renesmee suggested.
No one thought it would work.
“Hey, what's your name? ” Renesmee said in a small voice.

“Rosie. Rosemary Johnson.”
They only changed her surname to Cullen but in honour of her past parents she remained Rosie.

When she met Jacob she was very excited about him. He would smile at her, give her food and tell her weird stories. Soon, she followed him around the home much to Rosalie's chagrin.

She soon forgot her traumatic experiences and grew accustomed to the Cullen household. Then out of the blue Demetri arrived. They were not anticipating him. He saw Rosie and though he said nothing Edward said that the Volturi now had a foothold.

Alice confirmed they would arrive in two days. Rosalie frowned and thought of running with the child.

“Then you'll die in vain because they will definitely destroy her.” Alice said.
Rosalie was heartbroken but they had no options. Jacob offered the aid of the packs. Alice was not pleased; it made future outcomes difficult to envision.

The Volturi leaders came accompanied by Felix, Demetri, Renata and Santiago as well ten sedentary coven members.  As usual they were outnumbered.

“Carlisle,” said Aro happily.
Carlisle politely returned the greeting.
“What are we being accused of this time?” Rosalie said.
Caius did not appreciate her response.

“We have only come to see how young Renesmee is.”
Aro insisted but Edward knew they wanted to see the human Demetri referred to. Edward kept mum, they were violating their own laws again. The Volturi were right this time but feared humiliation.

“May we come in and sit?” Marcus croaked.
Unexpected but a welcomed idea. Rosie was sleeping in the cottage. No one would see her. Aro listened. There was no sign of a heartbeat anywhere other than the giant brown wolf and the half breed child.

Aro proclaimed how well Renesmee was growing. Rosie woke up in the cottage alone; she wept. No one came so she got out of bed.

Caius was disappointed. He walked around the premises. Something was not right...

Rosie walked out of the cottage down a familiar path noisily.
“Mummy!”

Caius heard a little voice. He followed it to a well hidden pathway in the forest. There was a crying child; two meters away was a house. The Cullen family had fooled them. He felt rage swell in him.

He approached the girl, his evidence. She had steel wool hair that was deep black. Curly lashes and chicory brown eyes fluttered sadly like a dying butterfly's wings. Her round, dark face looked up at Caius and he was stunned.

No...

“You're not mummy.”
“No,” said Caius.
He felt his undead heart warm. She cried again. He knelt and held out his arms.

“Don't cry, little bambino. Come; I can take you to your mummy.”
