Embry and Artemis
Embry drove in his Toyota Lexus 2009. He had taken out a loan to buy the second hand Japanese car. It was proving to be a good investment. He sometimes even rented it out for extra cash.
He drove and stopped in front of Artemis' little purple house with an ancient sycamore tree in front of it.
She came out after two minutes and locked the door. She was wearing an oversized dark denim hoody with a red hood and draw strings. It was paired with light blue ripped jeans that showed her knees and white Doc Martens. Her hair was in a fishtail braid.
Embry looked at her some time before she met his gaze and he backed down. She could see in his silver car through the window he wore a brown cap and a sweater that was spruce blue with beige arms and a Chinese inspired necklace. His hair was tied back in a messy ponytail.
She had her Samsung mini in her hand and her purse.
"Hey, Em. So, where we headed first?"
He greeted her and said it would be good to see the movie first then they'd have lunch before he took her back home.
They agreed to split the bill for lunch and to share a jumbo pack for popcorn at the movies.
They parked at the Deer Park Cinema in Port Angeles after an hour's drive. They talked about their favourite songs, school and the prospects of finding a job if they didn't go to college.
The cinema was brightly coloured with blue and red tiles. Pink, yellow and blue walls towered above them. They met many families and couples there, although thankfully it wasn't crowded despite it being a Saturday.
They opted to see a comedy. After getting two Dr Peppers, a jumbo pack of popcorn and Mountain dew they headed into the theatre to their designated seats.
Early into the movie Artemis was enjoying herself. She laughed. Embry chewed. Then he heard a fart joke and still a child at heart laughed the hardest at that.
Their hands met in the packet and they stared at one another. Embry removed his hand faster and gave her the whole packet. She coughed before accepting it.
They were tensed up and they took some time before they could relax enough to watch the movie or eat.
Artemis told Embry she had to pee. In the bathroom she overheard a woman frantically tell her best friend in one of the stalls her husband had said he would come back to take her out but he hadn't been seen for three days now. Artemis stiffened. She fleshed out the location of their house.
It could be a vampire...
Artemis came back bad tempered. Embry sensed it and held her hand. She started then saw it. She looked at him. Embry wasn't looking at her, he was looking at the screen but sweating profusely.
Artemis let him hold her hand and he eased up. They left the movie after getting there at 10:30, at 12:15.
They were both famished so Artemis suggested they eat then. Embry drove them to Grayson's restaurant. A cute, long grey restaurant. It was more like a takeaway with few places to sit. Very affordable for teenagers like them with no permanent jobs.
Embry ordered gravy and biscuits and two burgers at the blue counter. She stared at the blackboard above the counter.
Artemis realising she didn't bring enough money and would probably cook at home...just ordered fries and a double crispy chicken burger.
They sat at a pineapple coloured table with lime green chairs.
"What are you doing these days? You know for money? You have a nice car must have worked really hard to get it."
Embry lifted his head up and grinned.
"Well I'm a part time taxi driver, I rent this car out too...took a loan out actually after I started working as a bartender.
I'm trying to get an apprenticeship with a plumber...I thought I'd be a car mechanic but I'm not nearly as good as Jacob."
When the food came the two burgers were passed to her. She gasped.
"You got me these?"
"I noticed you were a little low on the cash and besides you're a wolf that phases everyday you need to eat a lot more than me."
She smiled in gratitude but frowned as another thought snuck up on her.
"When was the last time you did phase?"
"It's been two months and I want to move on."
She pushed around her fries with a fork.
"Oh? We'd really miss you...the pack."
"You don't need me, oh great alpha. Plus I noticed the pack is more cohesive as three."
Artemis felt alone.
"Hey, I'm always around if you need me."
"Thank you, Em."
They ate heartily. The fries were crispy and spicy. The chicken was crunchy but juicy on the inside with a delicious garlic mayo sauce. The other burgers were beef and pork which she also liked. Embry's biscuits were savoury and the gravy had a nice beefy taste.
Embry couldn't finish his food and he asked for a take away packet. They had a beer together...no-one asked for their IDs because they both looked past 18 years old.
Artemis could actually taste the different components of the alcohol and wondered if Embry could too.
Embry and her walked close together and she admired how the jeans he wore hugged his butt and the nice sneakers he had.
He said he bought them on Ebay from a Korean seller for ten dollars. They had a single black feather on each shoe.
She said they should go out again soon.
Embry felt thrilled.
"Have you thought about what you'll do after high school?"
Artemis felt reality swoop in.
"I can get a waiter job, hey? Maybe work for a museum as a tour guide?"
Embry nodded.
"Maybe to save up but what's your plan for the rest of your life? You can't just be a poor protector of the tribe. You need a little cash....did you think of capentry? You are pretty good at it."
Embry recalled the time when they were scrapped for cash at home and she crafted a bookshelf and TV stand for his mother just for two meals.
All the other carpenters had refused.
"I don't want to do that forever....it's more like a hobby. I wish that white girl Prince charming shit would happen to me. That Isabella had no life plans at all and now she's suddenly financially secure."
Embry frowned.
"She just had to destroy lives and sell her soul to do it."
Artemis stopped talking about Isabella Marie Cullen and started bouncing job ideas off her friend Embry.
