It won't last. You're young. He's Thomas Jefferson. Why would he suddenly commit to someone? Especially you? That's not what either of you wanted. You wanted fun, you wanted a fling that burned hot and intense and left just as quickly. And that was all you were going to get anyways.

That's what you told yourself every minute of the day. And that's what you'd been telling yourself for the past year and a half.

You tried to believe it, you really did. But as time dragged on, you began to wonder more and more if your faith was misplaced.

You tried to put reason to the way that burning in your chest had never faded, even as the two of you grew accustomed to each other. You tried to to put reason to the way that he would look at you when it seemed nobody else in the world existed, on late nights when you sat on his bed together, as though even with the roof over your heads and the blankets sheltering you, he could see all of the stars in the world within you. You tried to put reason to the lingering, burning touches he would press to your hands, your shoulder, your waist, at every opportunity he got.

You tried to put reason to the way his breath hitched as your lips brushed against his neck. You tried to put reason to the way you seemed to loose control of your body to his quiet groans as you pressed kisses to his jawline. You tried to put reason to the way he gently pulled you away, cradling your face in his palms, and his pupils dilated as he panted lightly. You came up empty.

"Darlin'... we... we can't... I don't want this to be just a one time thing."

"Why is that?" You questioned him softly, covering his trembling hand with your own.

"Because I love you."

And then you found reason when you gently tangled your fingers into the fluffy hair at the base of his head and gazed tenderly at him. Looking into your smiling eyes, Thomas suddenly found all the answers to his lasting, agonizing inquiries right at his fingertips. You were barely able to drink in his widened eyes and flushed face before you leaned in and finally pressed your lips to his.

I love you.

The entire world seemed to sigh at once as Thomas snapped out of his shock and embraced you hungrily. You found reason in his eyes shining with tender elation as he pulled away to breath and attempted to hide his beaming smile in your hair as he wrapped you in a chaste hug, your chests heaving and your hearts entwined at last.
