Chapter 26: Hero Names
I burst through the doors of class 1A, "Good morning my favorite little heroes!"
The class greeted me with cheerful enthusiasm.
It was Monday morning, but I was so excited for the week ahead. Today, my students would be choosing hero names and then leaving to their first internships!
Aw, my little guys were all grown up!
I waltzed to the front of the classroom, and looked at Shota who was clearly irritated with my outburst, "So, Shota... Have you told them the good news?!"
"Well, I was about to until—"
I cut him off, "Great!!" I turned my attention back towards the class.
"We have very serious business to attend to!" I commanded. The class stopped their chatter and looked at me with anticipation.
"I know you're all leaving for your internships this afternoon. However, before you go..." I paused, enjoying how they were hanging onto every word. "You need to choose your hero name!"
The class erupted with excitement, cheering, and yelling. Of course we're all heroes to help and save people, but the cool name and cool costume was still just a ton of fun.
I looked at their joyful faces, remembering how much fun it was to be a young hero. I sighed happily.
Shota looked at me annoyed. "Fun weekend?" He said in a low voice, referring to my clothes.
I was wearing a light-weight, cropped turtleneck that hugged my body nicely.
Yea, so what, Keigo and I got a little carried away this weekend, and he may have left some marks on my neck. At least I had the decency to hide it from the students.
I smirked, "You jealous?"
His cheeks heated up and he quickly looked away, staring at the ground. Oops, guess he actually is.
I smiled to myself and returned my gaze to the students who were still chatting loudly, "Alright, alright. Let's get down to business!"
"Be careful what you choose today! It'll probably end up sticking with you for the rest of your lives."
"That being said," I continued. "I'll have final approval for all names to make sure you don't get stuck with something awful and embarrassing."
I passed out the materials and told the students to start brainstorming.
"Take some time to think about it, and you'll present your ideas to the class!"
"I'm going to sleep," Shota mumbled as he crawled into his sleeping bag.
"But you're missing the fun part!" I complained.
I saw him roll his eyes and turn over to sleep. Ugh, what a drag...
"Amaterasu!" Midoriya called, "How'd you pick your name?!"
The class quieted down and glued their eyes to me, "Well... your hero name really is so important. It reflects the way the world is going to see you. It is a representation of who you are and what you stand for."
"Amaterasu is the Goddess of the Sun. She's a shining light of hope who treats all equally and fairly. It was kind of bold to name myself after a goddess, especially such an important one," I chuckled. "But, it is a constant reminder of who I want to be."
The students all looked at me in awe, realizing that nothing I did was by accident.
"SO COOL!" Midoriya cried, breaking the silence. I laughed heartily.
"But today isn't about me! It's your turn to shine! Take a few more minutes, and we'll start presenting," I smiled at the class.
"She's also known for being lazy and sleepy sometimes," I heard Shota tease. "She likes to take naps."
I turned to him and smiled, "Maybe you should've been called Amaterasu."
"Mmm, I know you y/n. You take just as many naps as I do," he winked and rolled back over.
My heart started beating faster. One day, Shota. For just one day, can you not remind me why I fell for you so hard.
I continued to stare at him until Aoyama's voice broke me out of my trance, "Y/n-sensei! I'm readyyy!" he sung.
"Great! Come on up!"
He presented his board to the class, "I can not stop twinkling!"
"No, you can't." I smiled at him, "Let's just adjust this a bit." I rewrote the name on his board.
"CAN'T STOP TWINKLING!" he yelled, "It's perfect!"
"Alright! Who's next?!"
Mina marched to the front of the class, "Alien Queen!"
"Oh... uh... sweetie," I hesitated with a sour look on my face.
"UGH," she moaned and rolled her eyes, going back to her seat.
A few others came up and shared their names. Finally, some normal ones.
"Rainy Season Hero: Froppy!"
"Hearing Hero: Headphone Jack!"
"Martial Arts Hero: Tailman!"
Kirishima was starting to make his way to the front of the class, looking more nervous than I'd ever seen.
He held up his board, "Sturdy Hero: Red Riot."
"Mmm," I nodded my head, understanding his hesitation. "Bold move, Kiri."
"I know he's a little old school, but Crimson Riot was my idol! I want to be just like him!"
I smiled, "You know, you'll have a lot more to live up to?"
"I accept the challenge!"
"I have no doubt that you'll bring honor to this name. You'll make him proud," I gave him a wink, and he was glowing as he returned to his seat.
Shoto came up next, "I will be known as Shoto."
I smiled. How fitting.
"But that's just your actual name! Can you even do that?!" Mina whined.
I kept my eyes on Shoto as he looked to me for approval, "It's courageous to let your guard down and show the world who you truly are, Shoto. Vulnerability is a powerful thing.... I love it."
He gave me a small smile before walking back to his seat.
"HUH! YEA RIGHT!! CHECK THIS OUT!" Katsuki boasted as he stormed to the front of the class.
"KING EXPLOSION MURDER!"
I rolled my eyes, "No."
"WHY THE HELL NOT?!!!?"
"You're a hero, Katsuki. Not some violet mafia dude from a movie. Go sit down." I demanded, trying to hold back my laughter.
"Midoriya," I called. "You're up next."
He cleared his throat nervously as he showcased his name, Deku. "I used to think this nickname was something to be ashamed of, but then... but then, s-someone special showed me it could be the name of a hero." He shyly glanced at Uraraka while she blushed.
Ah, yes. Young love.
"It's beautiful, Deku." He beamed at my approving words.
Tenya came up to the front, "I will also use my first name. Tenya!"
"The name of a true hero," I winked at him knowing what a difficult time he was going through.
Katsuki rushed back to the front of the class, "LORD EXPLOSION MURDER!!"
I sighed, "All right everyone, I think we're finished for the day." I put my hand on Katuski's shoulder and guided him back to his seat while he groaned in frustration.
"Well," I looked into the eyes of the hopeful students in front of me as Shota joined me in the front of the class.
"Today's the big day! Good luck with your internships. Work hard. Take notes. Listen to and respect your mentors." I looked at Katsuki specifically for that one and heard him mumble under his breath, leaning back into his chair with his arms crossed.
"But, most importantly, have fun! Today your journey to heroism truly begins!" I threw my arm over Shota's shoulder, "Make us proud!"
The students began to grab the hero costumes and exit the class. Cheerfully saying goodbye and giving each other hugs on their way out.
I looked at Shota, my arm still around him. "Our little babies are all groan up," I teased.
He rolled his eyes and removed my arm, "You're too soft."
I laughed because it was true.
A couple students came up to say goodbye to me too, and I happily gave them hugs. Once the class was cleared, I felt kind of empty.
What am I going to do now that all the students are gone? I'm going to have so much free time on my hands...
I looked at Shota and sighed, my heart filled to the brim with joy, "This is the greatest job in the world."
