Chapter 20: Darkness
Sorry I didn't write much about the actual competitions of the Sports Festival! To be honest, those episodes/pages are just so good, I didn't think my writing could do it justice... Anyway, I hope you're still enjoying it!
"Hey y/n, it's been awhile."
My heart dropped, "D-Dabi?...."
"What? Expecting someone else?" He smirked.
I was completely frozen.
"Put that away, y/n. You're going to hurt someone." He said, gesturing to my sword.
"Not a chance in hell. What are you doing here, Dabi?" I said, trying to sound tough but my voice was shaking like crazy.
"Well, I came to see you of course." He was standing perfectly still, smiling. His hands were in his pockets.
Don't let yourself be caught off guard. Don't fall for his trap.
"Shigaraki said you were working at UA now. I just had to come to see for myself."
"Tell that asshole to keep my name out of his mouth."
He laughed, "Glad to see you haven't lost your fire."
"Lost my fire? He must've forgot to tell you how I sliced up his little monster the last time we met."
"Oh no, I saw that myself. We were cleaning up the blood for days." He laughed again.
I actually wasn't sure if Nomu had died when I kicked it through the portal at the USJ... good to know it did.
"I thought heroes weren't supposed to kill?" He asked sarcastically.
I stood up straight, "You want to find out?"
His eyes flashed a hint of sadness at my threat, but just for a moment, "I just came to talk, y/n."
"So talk..."
"Come with me."
"You must be out of your mind..." I said as I put my sword away. It didn't look like there was going to be a fight after all.
How unfortunate.
"You still trust me I see," he said.
"I just know you'd be a fool to attack me alone... You're a lot of things, Dabi, but you're not stupid."
He laughed, "I've missed you, y/n."
My heart felt heavy with his confession, and I quickly looked to the ground.
"Do you ever think about me?" He asked in a soft voice.
Yes, more than I care to admit actually... But I couldn't tell him that.
"Just a couple weeks ago your buddies tried to kill me." I reminded him.
"You weren't supposed to be there!" He yelled in frustration, "I made sure of that before we planned the attack."
What the hell is he talking about? How would he know that?
"You were supposed to have the day off."
"Where are you getting your information, Dabi?"
This is not good. Does UA have a leak? A traitor?
"Answer my question first..."
"What the hell, Dabi!? Where are you getting your information!!" I was getting really pissed now.
"Y/n, please.... I have to know." His face revealing his desperation, "Do you ever think about me?"
"Why would I?"
"You know exactly why," he whispered.
"Why find me today? Why here of all places? You must've known how many heroes would be here today."
"Dammit, y/n!! Stop avoiding the question!"
The pain in his voice caught me off guard. Did he really come here just for this?
I took a deep breath and held his gaze, "Of course I still think about you."
There was a spark in his eyes when I shared those words. "y/n, I didn't even know you were coming back home."
"Because Dabi, you made your choice and I made mine," I reminded him.
"I think you chose wrong, y/n... And I think you know it."
"Then you know nothing about me!" I spat.
"I know you tell everyone not to call you Amaterasu. I know you don't want to be known as a hero. Why exactly is that?"
I was quiet, just staring at him.
"It's because you know they're all frauds!!!" He screamed, "You know how shallow this society is!!"
He's right. That's exactly why I left America. That's exactly why I don't want the title of "hero" now...
"But I still want to save people, Dabi. I still want to inspire." I whispered.
I've been confused on this for so long, and Dabi is not who I wanted to confide in...
But was it even possible?... Or was it too late to change the world?
"Y/n.... You and I, together, we can really change things. We can make them listen."
I looked into his eyes, desperately searching for answers.
Does he mean that? Would he really want to change the world with me?
I paused there for a moment... considering it all.
Suddenly, my mind flashed back to the USJ. My terrified, wounded students. Shota's lifeless body covered in blood.
Shota.
I thought of his smile. His kiss. His laugh... I could never betray him. I still loved him so much.
I looked back at Dabi, "What are you guys calling yourselves these days?"
"The League of Villains... Do you like it? I'm not actually a fan of it myself, but Shigaraki—"
I cut him off, "And Shigaraki's your leader?"
"He likes to think so," He smirked.
"Well he calls the shots, doesn't he?" I asked, provoking him.
"What are you getting at?" He responded, clearly annoyed.
"Hm," I smirked. "I just never pegged you as someone who would follow an incompetent asshole like him."
"You know, all those years ago, I might have actually joined you if it weren't for him," I continued. "I've never been a fan of weakness."
His eyes were oozing rage now.
"And I couldn't help but notice how little he's changed. I hope his idiocy isn't rubbing off on you too," I sneered.
"Y/n, remember your place," he threatened.
"My place!?" I laughed, "Haven't you learned!? I'm rarely well-behaved, Dabi. Isn't that why you fell in love with me in the first place?!"
A darkness was beginning to come out of me. One that I had been hiding away for so long.
I pulled my sword back out, "You better get going Dabi, I'd hate for anyone to have clean up your blood too."
Suddenly, a blue fire started enveloping his arm.
Blood Manipulation. 5%.
His fire immediately disappeared as his whole body began to tense and shake.
Blood Manipulation. 10%.
"Ahhh!" He let out a short scream and dropped to his knees.
"You shouldn't have brought out your fire, Dabi... I thought you knew not to provoke me."
My eyes began to glow.
"Y/n," He muttered, his voice full of agony.
"Y-your parents," he choked out, spitting up blood.
"T-they didn't want to kill you because of your quirk." He paused, trying to fight through the pain, "They tried to kill you because of this. You are a monster."
With those words, I snapped out of my trance, fully realizing what I was doing.
I let go of my blood manipulation, and Dabi sucked in a breath of air.
He dropped to his hands, on all fours now. He looked up and laughed manically.
"See, y/n!!!" He screamed, "This is why you should come with me!! YOU'RE ONE OF US!!"
I was sobbing as I dropped my sword and began stumbling backwards
No, no, I'm not. I'm not a villain. I'm not a monster.
I looked around frantically. Unsure of what to do as Dabi slowly stood.
My heart was racing, and I couldn't control my tears.
They should've killed me. They should've just killed me....
Who am I?
"Well, y/n, should we end this once and for all," he asked while igniting his blue fire again.
"Y/n!!" I looked up and saw Hawks flying towards me.
"Mmm, what terrible timing. The fun was just starting," Dabi called.
"I'm sure we'll see each other again," he declared. "Until then, don't be a stranger." he gave me a wink and disappeared back through the purple vortex.
Hawks landed just as Dabi faded out of sight.
"Y/n, are you ok!?" He yelled while running to me.
I was still frozen in place, staring at the place where Dabi had just stood.
Hawks gave me a huge hug wrapping me in his wings.
After a moment, he pulled back and put his hands on my shoulders, looking at me frenzied.
"Y/n, are you ok!? What happened!?"
I peered into his eyes and immediately broke down.
He picked me up bridal style and carried me back into the tunnel, setting me down in the shade.
"It's ok, y/n. You're safe." He was carefully caressing my cheeks.
"I'm going to call this in, and I'll be right back to hold you. Just hang on."
I brought my knees into my chest and buried my face.
"Attention. Amaterasu had an encounter with the League of Villains at the south east exit. She's safe. I'm with her. Everyone, stay on high alert!" I heard Hawks call into the radio.
He came rushing back to me and immediately sat down. He put his arm and wing over me, and pulled me close while I stayed in the same position.
We sat in silence for a few moments until we heard footsteps rushing towards us.
I still didn't have the energy to lift my head up.
"What happened!? Is everything ok??" All Might asked in a frantic voice.
He crouched down and put his hand on my shoulder.
"Y/n, you're safe," he said gently.
Just then, I lifted my head to see All Might in front of me with Shota and Present Mic standing behind him.
With more footsteps in the distance, I looked down the tunnel and saw Midnight and Kamui coming our way.
Great, now I'm some damsel in distress.
I looked back at Shota and I could see the dread on his face.
Shota, the memories of you are what brought me back... I wish I could tell you. I wish you knew... I love you.
I wanted to scream. I had never felt more trapped.
"I-I'm fine," I muttered as I tried to get up.
My legs gave out, and I collapsed back to the ground, but Hawks caught me before I could fall.
Immediately, I started crying again.
"Hawks," I whispered. "Can you take me home?"
"Of course chickadee," he replied softly. "All Might, can you take over here? It's almost over."
"Absolutely! You can count on us!"
I was still leaning onto Hawks for support as we slowly stood, "Thank you... I'll make a report later."
"Don't worry about any of that, Y/n. Just rest." All Might replied.
I broke away from Hawks and dropped into All Might's arms.
I just needed a hug from someone who really knew me, "Toshinori." I cried.
He rubbed my back lightly, "I'll be over soon, I promise. As soon as this is over."
I nodded and let go of our embrace, weakly walking back over to Hawks.
I looked at Hawks, "I don't know why you have to be the one who keeps saving me." I smiled.
"Well, good thing there's no where else I'd rather be," He returned a smile. "Want a lift?"
"Yes, please." I laughed.
He picked me up bridal style again, "Thanks, everyone. Tell Nezu I'll call him as soon as I can."
With that he took off and left the others to handle the rest.
I'm sorry, Shota. I understand now why you said I was too much work...
**Aizawa's POV**
My heart sank as Y/n broke down in All Might's arms.
What happened to her? Why can I never be there when she needs me?
y/n walked back over to Hawks, "I don't know why you have to be the one who keeps saving me."
What does that mean? How many times has he saved her? What is he saving her from? Me?
Everyone began to go back to their posts as Hawks flew off carrying y/n.
I should be taking her to safety. I should be tucking her in and protecting her.
"Shota," All Might called.
I looked up at him.
"You need to reach out to her," he demanded.
"She doesn't want that," I mumbled, not in the mood for a lecture.
"Shota!" he yelled. "She needs you! Don't let her down."
He walked away, already commanding orders over the radio.
I pulled out my phone.
To: y/n
—
I sighed, having no idea what to say.
Maybe I'll try again later...
