Chapter 4
Cass walked through the crowded marketplace, her bag holding dried meat, dried fruit, and bread. In front of her in the crowd, she caught a glimpse of golden blond hair and blue eyes. "Jake?" She questioned. The boy jumped, dropping a pile of books that he had been carrying.
"Oh! It's you! Nice to see you again" Jake said, kneeling down to pick up his books, his face red with embarrassment . Cass moved over to help him. "What are all these books for?" She asked reading the cover of the one in her hand ("Souls: Basic Concepts and the Effects of Magic"). "Uh- Reading. There's not much else for me to do unless I'm running errands for the guards" Jake replied. Cass nodded, flipping through the book. "That's cool, I guess. Aren't these books a bit difficult to read, though? The effects of magic are really hard to understand without knowing much about magic itself, and it's nearly impossible to find books on it".
Jake looked at Cass for a second before standing up with his books. "I know. I've been looking for books on magic for a while now" Jake jumped and started waving his hands defensively. "N-not to actually do any actual magic, of course!" He said. "Just to learn more about it". Cass smiled. " 'Course not. I actually happen to own a book on magic. It's pretty old, and the letters have worn off in some places, but it's still an interesting read, I'd lend it t' you, but we're leavin' town soon, so I wouldn't be able to get it back". "That's unfortunate. If you come back here anytime soon though, you have to promise to let me borrow it" Jake said. Cass smiled again. "Sure. Anyway, I've got t' get going" She waved and started to leave the market.
