Chapter 1

Cass and Oak sat at a small table in the the back right corner of the inn's taproom, pretending to have a conversation as they waited. The door of the inn swung open, allowing three town 'guards', one of which carrying a large sack of coins, to enter. They were followed by a young boy with golden blond hair and pale blue eyes. He was wearing a pretty typical clothing, a tunic with a faded green color with a pair of plain woolen pants, but he was sitting with the guards, so Cass assumed that he was probably working for them as a page or something.

The guards were well fed and overconfident, and they swaggered over to the bar like they owned the place, which, given their thuggish behavior and tendency to push around any of the towns residents who did so much as look at them funny, they might as well have. Guards were meant to protect the cities and towns of Rosskoning, but the king didn't pay much attention to cities outside of the one in which he lived, so most of the guards ended up using their positions to pretty much do whatever they wanted.

The guard with the sack of coins set it on the seat next to him. Cass and Oak stood up and walked to the bar, continuing their conversation. Oak pushed a small pile of coins over to the man running the bar, while Cass slipped the sack of coins off of the chair next to the guard and into a bag hanging by her side. The guards were all too busy drinking and laughing with one another about whatever stupid thing they had done that day to notice. The two girls exited the bar and grinned at each other.

"That was amazingly easy." Cass remarked. "Not gonna lie, though, I'm kind of disappointed that it wasn't more of a challenge". Oak shrugged. "A bit of a challenge would have been nice, but we did what we hired to do, and no one got hurt, so I'd still consider this mission a success". Cass nodded. "I guess. Still woulda been fun to knock some heads, though" She took the money out of her bag. "We're taking this to the church, right?" she asked. "Yeah. The priest said that he'd help re-distribute the money to the people that the guards stole it from" Oak answered.

The pair arrived at the town's church and entered it. "Hello? We got your gold back!" Cass said loudly, the sound of her voice echoing off the walls. The priest emerged from the back of the church. He had grey hair, and seemed to be on the far end of his middle-aged years. His posture was hunched, and he looked around the church nervously before he saw the girls. "Ah- hello" He said. "D-did you manage to get the money?". Cass handed him the bag. The priest muttered under his breath as he checked the bag's contents. "Gods help me, hiring a couple of demons to steal for me". He then turned to the girls. "Er- thank you. Now what did you two want in exchange for this?". Cass opened her mouth to object to the demon remark, but Oak stood in front of her before she could speak, shaking her head. She smiled patiently "Money, food, anything, really. We're just glad that we could help out." The priest seemed to be somewhat taken aback by Oak's politeness, but he gathered himself quickly. "Er- yes, of course". He dug into his pocket, pulling out a handful of assorted coins and handing them to Oak. "Sorry, I don't have that much" The man said. "Don't worry about it" Oak replied. "We're just grateful for the job. Anyway, we're leaving town tomorrow, so we should probably go get some sleep. Thank you for the money". She and Cass, who had been staring daggers at the priest during the whole exchange, left the church.
