Fifty Eight
Short chapter
Persephone
"Where are you going?" my mother sneered with apparent disdain, watching me from the top of the stairs. It was nearing sunset and I was eager to meet Zeus in the fields as he instructed.
"Somewhere" I growled impatiently. I did not wish for her to know. She would stop me if she knew I was returning to the underworld, especially with Zeus.
" Kore!" she screamed but I ignored her, still packing a few of my belongings and ethereal charms. I needed to be prepared for anything since I was going back to the place I was not welcomed.
"Kore!" She repeated again, this time coming down a few steps. Again and againwe cried out. With each yell, another step down the stairs she took.
"Kore!"
Now, I was impatient. If she could not learn to address me as my proper title I would not give her my awknoledgement.
"Answer me Kore!"
Icouldn't take it anymore! I lifted my finger, using my powers to send her across the room.
"ENOUGH!?" She flung into the brick wall, hitting her head against the panel that partitioned the kitchen.
She glared, intentionally, lifting a palm to caress the fresh lump against the back of her head.
"Your power...it is dark" she uttered menacingly.
I continued packing, wrapping the waist of my dress tighter in preparation for the journey.
"He has made you into something unfathomable. Something... sinister. He turned you into a monster"
"Well, at least I am a pretty monster Demeter" I teased, loading up on more provisions. She stretched her arms against the wall, slowly sliding up until she balanced and stood straight.
"Why?" It was the only word her strength permitted her to speak out.
"Why what?" I regretted entertaining her question instantly.
"Why him? You had the choice to leave! He is revolting...crass."
"You are bestowing those attributes to the wrong man Demeter"
"I am not! He is vile! He is adark entity of chaos and destruction!! You are a fool for going back to him"
"Zeus is the man who you describe Demeter and ... yet? You bore his child. You went back to him. You let his filth inside your body twice. How dare you question my sanity?"
She was silent.
"I don't care what you have to say. I love Aideoneus and nothing you can say or do, will stop me."
She dropped her head low, looking to the ground in denial.
"Don't wait for me. You may never see me again.
I may die today or tomorrow. Either way... I don't want to live in suffering because of any unforgiven grudges I may hold so I forgive you and I love you"
Demeter didn't even ask where I was going this time. She understood.
And for the first time in a long time she was quiet.
And I was grateful.
