Chapter 4 ~ Her Padawan

Well, the results were overwhelmingly anti-Anisoka (which believe me, I am perfectly fine with), so we'll stick with Amidala for now.

Also, as I was writing my story, my parents started to mock me. Apparently, instead of seeing me as a dedicated writer with a quick hand, this is what they said they saw me as 😂💀

"Oh my," a Jedi healer mumbled under her breath as she inspected the wounds on Ahsoka's arms. "That doesn't look good."

"What do you mean?" Shaak demanded suddenly, whipping her head around from the wall she had been absentmindedly staring at. Realizing that her tone had been quite irrational, she awkwardly laughed and corrected herself. "What's wrong?"

"These splinters are minor," the healer assured her. "But these scratches? What in the world did she do?"

"I'm not really sure," the Togruta admitted sheepishly. "I was just assigned to her. Ahsoka, would you mind explaining?"

"I was attacked by an akul," the little girl casually shrugged. She looked up to Shaak, innocently blinking her electric blue eyes. The Jedi Master smiled back at the little girl, but immediately caught herself tore her gaze away.

"Akul? What were you doing on Shili?" The healer asked.

"Collecting her," Shaak remarked, gesturing her hand at the small Togruta. "As I said, she was just assigned to me."

"That can't be true," the Jedi mumbled to herself as she walked over to a drawer and picked up some tweezers. "No youngling training? Besides, how old is she? Surely too young to be a padawan."

"Her age and status aren't of your concern," Shaak firmly stated, getting fed up with the constant questioning. "She's plenty fit to be a padawan. Now, if you wouldn't mind, please go ahead and do your job."

The healer raised her eyebrow at the usually calm Jedi Master's outburst, but shook it off and proceeded with the little girl. She gently used the tweezers to slide the splinters out of her skin, then got some bacta gel and gauze and applied it to the gashes. After she was done, she softly lied her hands upon the Togruta's forearms and exerted energy onto them. She couldn't help but smile as the girl looked up at her and batted her long eyelashes at her.

"She should be good to go," the healer smiled warmly, withdrawing her hands from Ahsoka. "Just go easy on the scratches though, they still aren't completely healed."

"Thank you," Shaak replied. "I'll be back soon for a midi-chlorian test."

"Are you sure you don't want to do it right now? I don't have any other patients that need tending to."

"No, it's quite alright. I believe Ahsoka has had enough medical attention for the day, hmm?"

Ahsoka bobbled her head in agreement. While she would never tell, her arm felt like it was on fire. She was definitely ready to get out of this room.

"Come along then," Shakk ushered, walking towards the door and opening it. Ahsoka hopped down from the chair she had been sitting on and skipped to her Master. Together, the two of them wandered down the hall. "So, what now little one? Would you like to see your room?"

"Yes please," Ahsoka giggled excitedly. However, the more she thought about getting a new room, the more she realized that she was already missing her home. Her previously bouncy walk was replaced with a robotic pace as she recalled all of the good times she had growing up with her mother and Embala. Would the Jedi ever let her see them again?

    "-soka? Ahsoka?"

    "Huh? Oh, I'm sorry Master."

"It's quite alright little one. I was just saying that we're here."

Ahsoka looked up and realized that they had stopped in front of a white door. She watched in curiosity as Shaak extended her hand out, then made a sweeping motion with her fingers. The door swung open, yielding to elegant and quiet peaceful quarters.

"This is the common area," Shaak explained, gesturing to the living room and small kitchenette that they were now standing in the middle of. "The door to our left leads to my chambers, and to the right is now yours."

"It's so pretty!" Ahsoka marveled, basking in the soft glow that was coming from the light fixture overhead. "Has anyone else ever stayed in my room before?"

"Not recently," Shaak shook her head. "I've never had a padawan before. You're my first."

"And you're my first master," Ahsoka giggled. The older Togruta shook her head at the girl's silliness.

"Go ahead and get settled. Meet me back here in a couple of minutes."

Ahsoka nodded excitedly, then skipped off to her room. This door was simply opened by a doorknob, which the young Togruta was thankful for. She had no clue how to do the magic-hand-thing as her master had done.

She had to admit it- Ahsoka was a bit let down when she entered her quarters. Sure, they were still pretty, but it was very plain. White carpet, a small bed, light gray walls, and a white dresser. It was a lot nicer than her room back on Shili, but not nearly as personalized. She would definitely have to change that soon.

After a bit of looking around, she realized that there were two other doors on the opposite wall. She walked towards the first one in curiosity, then opened it up. It led to a quite spacious closet, but it was depressingly barren. Of course, that made sense, since she had just gotten here.

The next door led to the bathroom. It was sleek, but once again very plain. Some modifications were certainly coming in the near future.

    "Ahsoka! Are you coming?"

The small Togruta's head perked up at the sound of her master's voice. With a slight skip in her step, she made her way out of her quarters and back to the common area. "Yes Master," she politely replied.

"Good. There's a lot I need to teach you in a short amount of time, so let's get on with it," without further explanation, Shaak turned back to the main door and performed her trick again. Like before, the door swung open, allowing the two Togrutas to exit the room.

To be completely honest, Shaak didn't have the slightest clue on what to do. What was Ahsoka even ready for? Perhaps simple tasks using the Force should wait for another time. While the Togruta seemed to be good at them, she certainly didn't want another incident like previously to occur. She had only known Ahsoka for one day, but if anything happened to her, she would already kill everyone responsible and then herself.

"Master? Where are we going exactly?"

"Um..." Shaak chuckled nervously. "That's a secret. You'll see when we get there."

"I'm good at keeping secrets," Ahsoka boasted. "I've kept one of Embala's for three whole years! So you can tell me!"

"Where's the fun in that? Don't worry, you'll find out soon." Truth was, Shaak didn't even know herself. It was true... there was so much to teach. Ahsoka hadn't even gone through youngling training.

Realizing that she would have to make a decision quickly, Shaak hung a sharp turn left and made her way down another hall. "We're almost there," the Togruta assured her padawan, noticing that the girl was starting to grow impatient. "And... here we are."

Ahsoka looked on in curiosity as Shaak opened a door to their left. The room seemed pretty basic, save for a couple of racks of wooden rods, a box of small spheres, and other miscellaneous items scattered around. "I don't believe I understand..."

"Reflexes. They're important, no?" Shaak asked, somewhat rhetorically. Still unsure of how that was relevant, Ahsoka hesitantly nodded her head. The older Togruta walked towards the box of spheres and pulled one out. It was soft, blue, and made mostly of rubber. Without warning, she gently threw it at Ahsoka. The startled girl jumped and instinctively raised her hand to catch it.

"See? If you didn't have reflexes, that ball would've hit you. Now, what if..." Shaak wandered off and picked up a helmet of sorts. She returned, plopping it on top of Ahsoka's head and allowing the visor to fall over the girl's eyes. This time, when she threw the ball, it bounced off of Ahsoka's shoulder without being caught.

    "Now where are your reflexes?"

"But I can't see!" Ahsoka argued, raising her hand to move the visor away. Shaak quickly batted the hand away.

"Your eyes might not see, but your senses still can. The Force- it lives not only in objects, but around it as well. Find the Force that lies inside you, then use it to make a connection with your surroundings. Only after that will you be prepared for anything that is thrown your way, metaphorically and literally," Shaak explained, slowly pacing over to where the ball had landed. She picked it up, moved a couple of silent steps so Ahsoka wouldn't know where the ball would be coming from, then threw.

This time when the ball sailed through the air, the girl wasn't completely clueless. She managed to turn to where it was coming from, but it flew right past her hand and hit her in the chest. The Togruta frowned before letting out an audible sigh.

"Hey, just focus. Don't try to feel for the ball, try to feel for the Force in the ball."

Shaak once again threw the ball, expecting it to hit the girl again, but was met with a shock. Ahsoka had heeded her master's words extremely well, spinning sharply on her heel and extending her hand to the perfect position. Then, as smooth as smooth gets, the ball landed right in her palm as she wrapped her fingers around it.

"I did it!" Ahsoka cheered excitedly before bouncing up and down. "This tingly feeling inside me told me exactly where it would land."

"Where it would land?" Shaak asked, perplexed.

"Yeah. It told me that I would turn and it would hit me right here," she gestured to a spot on her shoulder. "So I put out my hand to catch it in front of that spot."

"Odd," Shaak remarked, only loud enough for herself to hear. That certainly wasn't the normal approach to this drill. However, she wouldn't complain. If it caused Ahsoka to succeed, then it was fine. "Now, let's try this a little bit faster."

The older Togruta walked to the box of spheres, but this time, she picked up the entire thing. Resting one side of the container on her hip, she slowly paced around in a circle, throwing the balls at a hastened speed. She couldn't help but gasp in amazement as Ahsoka caught every single one, dropping them intermittently to free up space for the next ones.

"This is fun!" Ahsoka announced with a giggle once Shaak ran out of ammunition. "Can we do it again?"

"Not today," the master shook her head. "We're going to move on to something else. Maybe tomorrow though?"

"Okay!" Ahsoka beamed. She reached up and peeled back the visor, revealing her twinkling blue eyes. Then, realizing that there was a multitude of the spheres lying around, she eagerly jumped into action by picking them up. She had only gathered about six of them when they began to fall out the other side of her arms. The padawan frowned at this for a moment, then tried to adjust her pose and picked up some more. However, this failed her as well and she only got to seven.

"You can make more than one trip, Ahsoka," Shaak laughed at the young Togruta's predicament. Realizing that the woman was right, Ahsoka grinned sheepishly and dropped them into the bucket before returning to pick up the rest. However, as she bent down to pick up the last one, the visor fell down from its position and covered her eyesight. Ahsoka scowled as she realized that both her hands were full, so she wasn't able to remove the object obstructing her sight.

When Shaak noticed Ahsoka's problem, she smiled and took the opportunity to turn this into a lesson. "Remember, use your other sight. Your eyes aren't the only things that can see."

Ahsoka nodded, then withdrew a deep breath. She focused on the darkness surrounding her, trying to locate her target. A small tingling sense guided her head towards the direction of the bucket, which she noticed had moved from its previous position. Had Shaak moved it?  She shrugged, then carefully made her way towards it. Then the Togruta suddenly felt something graze against her... but... it hadn't really? It was just a feeling? Realization hit her as she remembered how the Force had warned her of the balls that Shaak threw at her. There was something in her way. She sidestepped just enough to pass whatever was in her way, then finally set the spheres down into the box. Now that her hands were finally free, Ahsoka used them to remove her visor and turn around. It had been her master that was standing in her way.

"That was very impressive, Ahsoka," Shaak purred. "You're a quick learner. I knew I was making the right choice when I chose to take you as my padawan."

Ahsoka smiled brightly at the praise. "Thank you, Master."

Shaak nodded, then turned and began walking out. Ahsoka had to break out into a small jog to catch up, given that the older Togruta's legs were much longer and caused her to have a longer stride.

    "What now?"

"Now we move on to something less hands-on," the Jedi Master explained. "Come with me."

The walk was long, but Ahsoka only grew more excited with each step. What would they be doing this time? Learning how to use those glow-stick thingies? Making objects float? Learn about fighting techniqu-

"You must remain quiet in this room. Only soft whispers, okay?"

Ahsoka, now brought out of her train of thought, looked up to Shaak and nodded. She had to be quiet? Where's the fun in that? Ooo... maybe they were playing the quiet game! She would definitely impress her master at that. One time she had beat Embala in a game that lasted three entire-

"Ahsoka! Are you even paying attention?" Shaak whispered in a strained tone. The girl snapped out of her thoughts and blushed in embarrassment.

    "Sorry Master."

"Anyways, what I was saying, is that this is the most important thing you'll ever do in your training. As a Jedi, you'll need to learn to not harness the Force, but work with it. 'One with the Force' is what they call it. Do you understand?"

"Um..." Ahsoka scratched the nape of her neck. "I mean, I guess? You want me to connect the Force inside of me with the Force in everything else, right?" The girl slowly answered, though her words were more of a question.

"You're on the right track. Now come, experience for yourself," Shaak whispered, then guided her up some steps to a fountain. The waters that flowed throughout the feature were as clear as a crystal and flowed with unmatchable grace.

"Sit. Close your eyes, like this," Shaak sat down on the thick ledge of the fountain, tucking her legs together in a crisscrossed position. The Master let her eyelids flicker shut, then rested her hands on her thighs to where her palms were facing up. After a moment, Shaak opened her eyes and looked at Ahsoka expectantly.

The girl sat down and copied Shaak's position, however she remained with her eyes closed. "Now what?" She whispered back, giggling at her own confusion.

"Now remember what I said? You need to find peace with the Force, not against it."

"I still don't know how I'm supposed to do that."

Shaak couldn't help but snicker at the bluntness of the kid's statement. Well, at least she's honest.

"Reach out to the Force around you. Call to it. See if you can create a bond between you and it."

Ahsoka tried to do as she was told. However, all she really found was a bunch of dead ends. Sure, she stumbled across a couple of waves of the energy, but they all seemed to turn a blind eye towards her. She huffed in defeat, opening her eyes and looking up at her master.

"You're seeking too hard. Open yourself up to the Force. Allow it to come to you."

The Togruta softly sighed at her master's words. How was that supposed to make sense? How does one even go about opening themselves up to something invisible?

"You're thinking too much," Shaak corrected. "Just do."

This time when she closed her eyes, she didn't try and find the Force. Instead, she called whatever was out there to come to her. Nothing happened immediately, which certainly began to dampen her mood. However, not wanting to give up in front of Shaak, she pushed on and lowered any emotional walls she had placed up. Now the Force had access to absolutely everything. Her joy of being a Jedi, her homesickness, and even her admiration of the older Togruta that was sitting beside her. Within moments, Ahsoka began to feel sparks of energy coming to life around her. A small smile graced her face, then she remembered the second part of what Shaak had told her.

Find the Force that lies inside you, then use it to make a connection with your surroundings.

Sure enough, there were the same waves of energy that resided inside her. Using those, she reached out to the Force that encircled her. The second the two energies collided, it almost felt as though electricity went flying. She was sent sliding backward, causing her eyes to fly open so she could quickly grab onto something and not fall into the fountain.

"What was that?" Ahsoka half-whispered and half-whimpered. "That felt funny."

"Are you alright?" Shaak gasped, completely ignoring the girl's question. "What happened?"

"I think I'm fine," she nodded, sitting up. "I'm not sure, really. One moment the Force inside me and the Force around me were separated, but the second they touched each other... I don't really know what happened."

"If you're not hurt, you should resume your training. Whatever happened needs to be fixed."

"Yes Master," Ahsoka nodded her head, but she was reluctant to close her eyes. What if that happened again? Whatever that even was...

By the time she had reached the point where she was earlier, Ahsoka was being eaten alive by her nerves. Did the outside Force not like her very much? Why was it reacting so odd? The Togruta inhaled sharply, prepared herself for another harsh impact, then reached back out the waves of energy. This time, instead of sending her back, it seemed to perfectly meld with her life energy. Now she felt empowered, stronger... if you may. She let out the breath she didn't realize she was holding and finally let herself relax. So this was what the Force felt like? Calming and peaceful, yet raging and powerful all at once?

"That was amazing," Ahsoka marveled as she slowly fluttered her eyes back open. She looked up at Shaak, who was proudly smiling back down on the girl.

"I'm glad you finally figured it out. Sparks really flew that first time, ey?"

Ahsoka giggled in response. "I suppose so."

"Well," Shaak began, looking down at her watch. "We should go ahead and return to our quarters now. You must be exhausted. Besides, there are a couple of things we need to take care of."

The two Togrutas stood up and brushed themselves off, then started on their journey back to their conjoined quarters. Ahsoka couldn't help but look up and admire the Jedi Master. Would she be the same way when she got older? Beautiful, composed, and wise? The girl was certain that Shaak lived up to every one of the tales that she was told of as a baby.

"Watch where you going little one, not me," Shaak suddenly laughed, having to softly grab Ahsoka's shoulders and turn her in the right direction so she wouldn't run into a wall. The small Togruta darted her vision down in embarrassment and mumbled an apology. Shaak simply shook her head and chuckled at the little girl. "We're here."

Ahsoka looked up and noticed their familiar surroundings. She came to a halt, then looked up at Shaak expectantly and waited for the older Togruta to perform her trick. Shaak couldn't help but smile at the girl's amazement at the simple task. "I'll have to teach you how to do it someday. For now, how would you like to look through some clothing catalogs?"

"Really?! I'd love to!" The girl replied ecstatically. She followed Shaak into their quarters, then plopped down on a cushioned chair in anticipation. A minute later, the Jedi Master was back with a holopad and an armful of clothes.

"These are some of the things I have," Shaak explained. She laid down the clothes and then picked up one of her more plain robes. Ahsoka tilted her head to the side, then reached up excitedly, waiting for Shaak to hand it over. When she finally did, Ahsoka quickly draped it across her shoulders and shoved her arms through the holes.

"Look at me! I'm Master Shaak Ti!" Ahsoka exclaimed, making her voice deeper in an attempt to mock Shaak. (see picture at the top of the chapter) The older Togruta broke out into a laugh at the sight.

"So you want some robes too?" Shaak asked, trying to conceal the chuckle that was rising in her throat.

"Yes please!" She cheered. "Except... more colorful."

"Alright, knock yourself out kid," Shaak handed her the holopad, then sat back and watched the girl sift through all the clothes in amazement. Most of them came in sizes too big for her, but after nearly an hour, she had selected a wide variety of things to fill her closet. Most were simplistic to fit in, but they all somehow had her playful touch.

"One last thing," the Jedi Master added. She pulled out a small chain that was in her pocket, then reached up to her headband. After a few moments, she had detached the smallest akul teeth from her band, then walked over to Ahsoka. She carefully removed the smallest teeth from the girl's as well, then held everything together in one palm. Closing her eyes, the Jedi wished for the chain and teeth to combine together. When she opened her eyes and palm, she found that the teeth had interlocked themselves with the chain as she had hoped. "Hold still, dear."

Ahsoka did as she was told, side-eyeing her master as the woman attached the chain to her headband and allowed it to hang between her miniature montrals.

With a soft smile, Shaak whispered, "You're going to be an amazing Jedi, my padawan."
