CHAPTER 16
Curiosity killed the cat.
But satisfaction brought it back.
After listening to Taurus's words, Capricorn pondered whether his curiosity could actually kill him. Sagittarius was,the best way to put her without resigning her to the words was that she was who she wanted to be. Is that something that wasn't in alignment with Taurus's views? However it didn't feel so. It felt much deeper. More personal.
Virgo had woken up from her nap and was staring out of the window of the helicopter. Her dreams hadn't been pleasant. The corners of her mouth were sunken as she gloomily watched the cities and towns pass by. She sighed and shook her head, trying very hard to not overthink everything.
"You do realise that it wouldn't work,"Capricorn's dry voice said from behind her.
She scowled but did not answer, choosing instead to observe clouds in the sky.
After a while, Capricorn gave up and continued his own trail of thoughts. They didn't help and he kept hitting a brick wall. He finally sighed and chose to follow Virgo in observing their surroundings.
Dusk was falling when they landed in front of the entrance of the caves. It was an entrance of the Ellora caves that had not been discovered yet. The entrance was well hidden from a normal human with normal abilities.
However the agents had superior vision so it was as clear as day to them. It was blocked from the common eyesight by the overhanging vines and trees.
They descended from the helicopter.
The grass scrunched under their feet and the moss stuck to the soles of their shoes as they went around the trees and into the network of caves. There was a mossy and rotten door of wood which Taurus broke so that they could enter(and Virgo could stop worrying that it was a trigger to some trap).
The inside smelt as would any place that hasn't seen daylight and fresh air for centuries. It was moist and damp and dust rose in mists as they walked.
Still, the carvings were marvels to look at. The images of various gods and goddesses were beautifully engraved in the hard rocks. The caves had been cut out of mountains, workmen hollowing them and carving such intricate designs on its walls.
The place was dark and the only source of light was the sunlight trickling into it from the entrance, due to the door being broken. Virgo wondered why this place hadn't been found when the archaeologists excavated the caves and led explorations into it. It was strange that out of all parts in this network, this part remained undiscovered.
She soon got her answers when they had walked a few metres into it. There was a static in the air and the chip at the back of their necks felt as if it was burning. The air seemed charged.
"So this is a trap,"she began as she turned towards Taurus who was frowning.
"I don't think so. This could be some ancient mechanism made to safeguard the key. After all,if you are protecting something this valuable, you won't leave it lying around for people to just walk past by it,"Capricorn said as his hand went to touch the heated metal on his neck.
Virgo licked her lips.
"Assuming that it is here,"was the only comment she made before continuing on, gritting her teeth against the pain. The chip was reacting to the electrically charged atmosphere and forming a barrier that would stop them from being affected. Doesn't mean that it hurt any less.
Taurus almost tripped over a skull.
"Clumsy as always,"Virgo mumbled as she looked at Taurus who was holding the skull up, reminiscent of the graveyard scene in Hamlet. Well,he sure wouldn't start spouting a monologue about how this was the skull of his childhood friend and jester.
He merely said,"It's not entirely unexplored, just the people who have explored this place had wound up dead.
Virgo looked a bit unsure.
"What if we end up dead too?"
Capricorn and Taurus exchanged a look.
"Well,we won't,"Capricorn began trying to reassure her.
"Hopefully,we won't,"Taurus cut in.
"Unless we are idiots. That's what you mean, don't you?" Virgo said, the corners of her lips twitching.
Capricorn and Taurus nodded.
"Well then, let's not tarry. We are walking a path to glory," she jokingly said as she began walking again.
Capricorn and Taurus exchanged another look before following her.
Into the Unknown.
"Ah,now is the time. Just a few more calculations. They won't even know what struck them,"the man said as he began typing something on his computer.
Behind him, seven deadly creatures were sitting, looking like caged beasts and thirsting for blood.
The man in the laboratory grinned, the ends of his lips almost touching his ears as the contents in the test tube he was holding, swirled and mixed to become the desired colour.
The man turned on his chair to look directly at the shadowy hunched creatures.
He smiled.
