Chapter 28
Agent X held his hands in position. He was unnerved when examining the theater room with green walls and a golden greek statue on each side of the floor. Cobwebs spread across like a huge net. The worn out floor panel spoke of decay. Each step let out a creak noise.
“This place has seen better days,” Agent X kept his eyes on the sleeper agents.
Agent X noted a large gold bird that hung on a rope in mid air. It resembled the legendary eagle Aetos Dios. Almost like the phoenix rising from the ashes of death. That mirrored Agent X’s journey escaping the Raven Agency.
“Who are you?” One of the sleeper agents asked.
“No one of consequence,” Agent X said.
Without warning, a sleeper agent lunged forward, landing a punch to Agent X's stomach. The force of the blow dropped him to one knee, gasping for breath as his heart raced in response to the sudden pain.
As he caught his breath, Agent X took the opportunity to study the sleeper agents. Their cold, soulless demeanor mirrored his own past, a reminder of the Raven Agency that had forged him into a weapon. A smirk of defiance crossed his lips as he regained his footing, fueled by the knowledge that these agents would fall before him.
“Here I was thinking I took the wrong detour,” Agent X pushed back up with determination.
“Who do you work for?”
“I work for no one.” Agent X’s hands were bound by white cables.
“I highly doubt that. Search the area.”
The sleeper agents left the room, closing the door. The room was silent between the two of them.
“Well, it looks like it is just you and me,” Agent X said as his eyes dotted to the side. His posture relaxed as he slid a small knife behind his hand rubbing against his wrists.
“Who are you?”
“Agent X.”
“Why did you kill one of my people? Was it revenge?” Bryan was one of the best agents. The man asked in frustration.
Agent X grew silent, taking the time to read Manson.
“No, it wasn’t revenge. I say you are a different kind of beast. The question is what kind are you?”
“Why don’t you come closer and find out,” Agent X said glaring at him.
“It appears you have a set of skills to beat my best assassin.” The man paced back and forth with his hand on his chin. “Before I became what I am today, I used to be a lawyer. The Raven Agency took everything from me. My wife. My son. Gone. I will take down Raven Agency.”
“A terrible tragedy.”
“I’m not looking for sympathy. The Raven Agency will pay for what they took from me.”
“What is your name?” Agent X asked.
“Manson.”
“As in Manson Davis?”
“How do you know me?”
“Let’s just say I know a friend that knows a friend,” Agent X said as the knife cut through the cable.
Manson’s eyes bulged as he drew out his gun. Adrenaline rose as Agent X started to run and jumped off stage and hid behind the audience chair.
As soon as Manson got to the chairs, Agent X opened the nearest trapdoor out of fear in front in swift fashion and closed it. Manson’s eyebrows lifted up in surprise at Agent X’s narrow escape. Manson ran to the doors and called one of the Sleeper agents by cell phone. No answer.
Agent X got behind Manson with his small knife in hand. He pivoted to the side as Agent X attacked with the blade. He dodged the sharp end of the blade and kicked Agent X forward. Agent X charged Manson close to the table. Manson retaliated and elbowed Agent X’s back. Agent X clenched his teeth and grabbed Manson and pushed him through a glass door as the pieces shattered.
Manson ripped off his belt and held it. When Agent X swung his blade left to right, Manson countered with his belt as the blade clashed against leather. Agent X reached for a small cup and chucked it at Manson’s head hitting the wall.
Agent X's hands clenched as he breathed heavily. Agent X pushed Manson towards the grand auditorium. The tension crackled in the air as they tussled on the stage beside the imposing statue of Aetos Dios. In a swift motion, Manson slammed Agent X's hand against the statue, forcing the blade to clatter to the floor.
With agility, Agent X executed a scissor kick, aiming to regain control. He swiftly blocked Manson's retaliatory strike, covered his torso, and then seized Manson's arm. As he delivered a powerful front kick to Manson’s waist, he followed up with a back-leg attack targeting the knees.
Manson, however, was quick to counter. With a determined push, he broke free from Agent X's leg lock, sending him sprawling to the floor. The struggle intensified, each fighter determined to outmaneuver the other.
Manson lifted his hand. “That’s enough. You proved yourself. You are welcome to join.”
“And if I don’t?”
“Then I will end you and avenge Bryan. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. If I were you, I would consider my proposal.” Manson wiped the blood off his lip with a white handkerchief.
Agent X teeth clenched with the offer. The mission was to eliminate the Sleeper Agents but not join their cause. Yet, the offer intrigued Agent X. Agent X and Mason moved back. There was a sudden explosion. Gunfire was heard in the hallways. Two people emerged from the chaos. Agent X and Manson turned to face them.
“Marco, I should have known,” Manson said."You betrayed your people."
"No, you betrayed them by signing their deaths," Marco said as he shot Manson in the head.
“Come on, let's get out of here,” Casey said.
Agent X paused as his hand clenched. He wrestled with uncertainty whether to go with them. After making a decision, he started to run behind Casey and Marco as the place started to burn and collapsed.
Everything was black and white until Marco came into picture and made things gray for Agent X. His mind was unable to rest about the offer from Manson. For a moment, Agent X saw a kindred spirit in Manson but that was short lived.
Agent X was burdened by the choice and his obligation to avenge Hugo’s death. Marco and Casey got in a dark van. Agent X got in the back seat of the van and they drove off in a hurry.
“You did good back there,” Marco said.
Agent X frowned as he gripped his hand. Casey glanced at him seeing how uneased he was.
“No, I don’t believe that,” Agent X said. “You have no loyalty to anyone but yourself.”
Marco put his foot on the brake. “If it wasn’t for me, you would be dead.”
“Like when you killed Hugo. You need to pay for what you did to him,” Agent X said as he pulled a gun on him.
Casey’s eyes tensed. “You don’t have to do this. The Raven Agency will be coming. We have to get out of here.”
“Why should I trust you?” Agent X asked.
“You need to look at the big picture. Now that the Sleeper Agents are gone. We have only the Raven Agency to worry about,” Marco said, gripping the steering wheel.
Agent X’s finger itched to pull the trigger. Hugo’s memories of him on the computer kept on flashing in his mind. “I will let you live for today.” Agent X lowered his weapon. He got out of the van and walked to the woods.
“Don’t follow me,” Agent X said as he kept on moving.
“We got to go,Case,” Marco said. He started the van and took off.
Five hours later Agent X arrived at the headquarters of the Raven Agency. The large double Raven coins on each corner of the wall of the building. He stood there in a well dressed suit disguise. Flashes of memories of the intense training cut through him in an instant. The missions they sent him on. The blood that soaked his hands was hard to wash away. All the faceless names he killed itched in his subconscious reprogramming.
Agent X had one choice in mind and that was to take the fight to the Raven Agency himself. To end their evil experiments that were done to him in Hugo’s memory.
Agent X attended a meeting. He looked around his surroundings of new faces he hadn’t seen before. The new leader of the Raven Agency spoke.
“Alright people. Agent X is still out there. We have reason to believe the sleeper agents are dead. I want a full investigation on clues on where to find Agent X or the people he worked with. Make it happen. Don’t come back until it is done. Dismiss.”
Agent X got the intell he needed and the new leader of the Raven Agency won’t rest until he finds him.
