"So, what have we learned?"
I paced the living room that was adjacent to our bedroom slowly. Four pairs of eyes stared up from the velvet divan in front of me.
"Mr. Freiburg seems to be normal. I didn't notice anything of concern while talking to him," Ty piped up. He laid back against the couch, at ease that everything was in order with his friend.
"Nothing at all?" I pressed.
"Nothing," Ty asserted.
I turned to Dari. "What did you learn about Madame Monpelie?"
"She seemed decently well, though she did a sloppy job with her make-up."
"Why do you say that?"
"I don't know... it just didn't look as pristine as usual. Also, I could see dark circles under her eyes. It was faint, especially given the amount of foundation she would have used to hide them, but they were still visible."
"Interesting. But that's it? She didn't seem... on edge or anything?"
Dari thought for a moment. "Naw, she actually was a bit more laid back than usual. Except when she started critiquing my fashion choices. You know how she is when she gets on that train."
I stifled a laugh. "Yeah. When did she arrive?"
"A couple days ago."
"Hmm, not very specific," I commented.
"No," she agreed. "But I can hack into the records if we need that information."
"Okay. What did she say that she has been doing the past few days?"
"She was rather vague," Dari observed. "But I think some light tourism."
"And her plans for tomorrow?"
"Sightseeing. I offered to go with her, but she declined. She said that she was going with her guards already."
"Did she mention anything about an escort?" I asked.
"No."
"Very odd indeed. We'll have to keep our eyes on her. Something isn't adding up."
Ty raised his hand. I gave him a what-the-heck-are-you-doing look.
"Um, yes Ty?" I said.
"Don't you think WAOIC would do a better job of concealing their agents? Like don't you think her abnormal behavior is a bit obvious?"
I considered his point. Unfortunately, I found myself agreeing with him.
"Yeah, you're right," I conceded. "But considering how she normally acts, I think it's worth looking into."
Ty shrugged. "Fair enough."
"Jax, did you see or hear anything of suspicion?" I enquired.
"No. The halls were rather quiet."
"Did you see any WAOIC agents?"
"No, but I'll keep my eyes peeled."
"What did you and Finn find out?" Dari asked.
"John Whincliff could be someone of concern," I noted. "He seemed awfully interested in whether or not we had brought other agents with us. As for Mr. and Mrs. Bachaniello, I felt like they were a bit on edge."
"Interesting," Dari said. "Mrs. Bachniello often is a bit on the nervous side of the spectrum, but Mr. Bachaniello is usually very happy-go-lucky."
"I get that impression, too," Finn agreed.
I sighed. "Okay. First few hours down, many more to go. We have to find out who the imposter is."
My team gazed up at me expectantly as I considered what we should do next. There were so many people to speak to, and so little time to do it. In the end, however, I doubted that a single conversation would be enough to determine if a person was an imposter.
It was during this time of reflection that my concern from earlier was revived.
"There's another point that we must consider," I began slowly. "What if WAOIC decided to pay off a diplomat, instead of actually switching a diplomat?"
The others' eyes went wide. They contemplated this development deeply, their brows furrowed and their gazes trained on the floor.
"Well," Dari began at last. "From what I have heard, the interior intelligence department has managed to decrypt some of WAOIC's confidential files by hacking into their database. That's how they determined that there was going to be an imposter."
My brow furrowed. "Why were they hacking in the first place?" I asked.
"Because the World Leader's Convention was coming up. It's been targeted by WAOIC for a number of years now."
"So we're certain that no one is being paid off?" I verified. "There will actually be a switch?"
Dari shifted in her seat. "As far as I know. But I would mention it to Rokmond when you check in with him."
I nodded. "Good thinking. In terms of a plan, I'm thinking we should split up for breakfast again. Dari, I'm going to need to see the surveillance camera in the morning."
"Gotcha covered." Dari winked.
"I'm going to call Rokmond in a bit. As for tonight, get some rest," I told them. "You've had a very strenuous day, and we need to be alert early in the morning."
"Rest? What's that?" Ty joked.
"It's nothing," I said. "Quite literally. You just lie down and do nothing."
"Sweet."
"We'll see you tomorrow then," Finn said.
Ty waved. "Yup, see ya."
"See ya," Dari said.
Jax nodded in farewell, and the three boys exited the room.
Dari kicked her boots off in the middle of the room. "Well, that's that. I'm going to chillax for a bit and work on some software stuff." She turned her attention to her ever-present laptop before I could respond.
I guess I should probably call the Director now. I strolled into the other room and dialed the U.L. The other end of the receiver picked up almost immediately.
"Agent 24?" Rokmond's gruff voice answered.
"Yes, just reporting in," I said.
"I hear you made the car switch. Were there any other problems along the road?"
"No, smooth sailing. We arrived at the hotel at five forty-one in the afternoon and had dinner with a few representatives. As of right now, we're noticing a few odd things with Italy, USA, and France."
"Okay, keep me informed."
"Sure. By the way, is there any way that WAOIC is going to pay off a delegate at the meeting, instead of replacing him or her with an imposter agent?"
The other end of the line was silent, except for the rustling of papers.
"As of right now, no," the Director said after a beat. "But we'll look into it and let you know."
"Great. Over and out."
I hung up my phone and plopped it on the plush, silver comforter on my bed. Well, that settles that.
I was just about to take off my shoes when the room's telephone rang. I dashed to the phone sitting on the bedside table in between the two beds in the room.
"Hello?" I said.
"Xara Oclen!" exclaimed the distinct voice of Mr. Jacques Le Foie, the Belgian representative. "This is Mr. Le Foie. What a pleasure it is to speak to you."
"Indeed. How have you been?"
"Marvelous, as always," he said. "I just saw Mr. Freiburg in the hallway, and he told me that you had arrived. I simply had to invite the five of you to a sightseeing tour the day after tomorrow. You will come, won't you?"
"Oh, yes of course!" I said. "Thank you for inviting us."
"No problem at all! It shall be a rather large affair. I have invited all of the delegates who have arrived so far."
"Sounds good. See you then!"
"Yes, au revoir for right now."
The Belgian diplomat hung up the phone. I sighed contentedly. That tour would be the perfect opportunity to observe the diplomats.
