Chapter Four: Marissa Can't Keep a Secret

It's been a couple of days since we've gone out to an actual amusement park. It was glorious but it made me envy going out and meeting normal people. Not spies. Certainly not people who can kill you in the blink of an eye or who can track you from half way across the world. Genuine human beings that are just normal. Spies are great and all but I want to meet people my age who are different than me.

I finally get to the living room and fall right onto the grey three seat couch. I grab the remote for the TV from the glass coffee table and whip out some shows to get my mind off of the fact that I will never have a normal teenage life being an agent.

Marissa pops into the room and smiles at me. Maddy's gone and James is oblivious to the fact that I'm a little upset. Helga and John haven't noticed me feeling a little under the weather either. They expect me to be top of my game because I'm Top Agent and so I'm not allowed to have any emotion.

Marissa can see right through me.

"Hey Marissa," I say, trying to keep my voice steady. "How's it going? Where are your parents?"

Marissa looks at me steadily. "My parents are on some mission in Camilia, there's a mass-"

"Genocide," I finish for her, nodding. There's been war in that country for centuries and our agency has been sending agents there with the knowledge of the country's government obviously. Our agency has greatly progressed after WWIII, we now handle everything truthfully unlike before.

"I'm fine," Marissa says taking the bowl of chips on the coffee table. "You, on the other hand, don't look too great."

"I'm fine Marissa," I say to her. I smile to try to seem more convincing. "Just got some things on my mind, that's all. You know who I am." That's the truth, I've got a lot of things on my mind whizzing around.

"Snow," she says to me sternly. "Stop it, you know I don't like when you don't tell me the truth."

"I'm serious," I tell her, taking the chips away from her. "I'm just thing about those people I met yesterday. They were very interesting."

"Fine," she says roughly. "If you don't wish to tell me it's okay. I trust you." I smile innocently at the crazy smart ten year old and turn back to the TV.

I see teens on the screen going to places and seeing things, things that don't include a historic spy museum where the first top agent went to pee and where she did her laundry. A history lesson I did not find interesting.

A blonde and a brunet pop up on the screen and hop into a shiny red convertible with the hood down. They turn on the music and all of a sudden they start dancing. After five minutes of only dancing, the guy puts the car into gear and starts driving to the mall, where they meet up with a red head and two guys. The girls hug and the guys do some weird handshake thing. The show seems to revolve around this group of friends having fun, enjoying life. Normally, I would be so bored and annoyed at this type of thing but, oddly I'm not. I'm quite envious once again.

I shake my head and pinch myself. Snow, this is so cliché. Snap out of it, please.

I change the channel and see a young boy, perhaps Marissa's age. He has brown hair, freckles and is wearing a red shirt. More importantly, he seems very upset sitting on the swing and dragging his foot through the sand.

"Aw, little guy," I say as I watch him making sure not to let Marissa hear. I frown as he does and I can feel my heart sink for him. "It's okay. You and I are the same. We both don't seem to have any friends. It'll be-"

"Johnny, Johnny," I hear. I look closely and see the boy's expression change. A smile replacing the frown. He sits up straighter and is filled with glee. A little girl pops up from the left and she's panting. Her little blonde pigtails jumping up every time she takes a step. "I'm so sorry I'm late," she says out of breath while heading over to sit on the swing beside the boy. "Mommy made me hang back for a minute while she cleaned the dishes. But, I'm here now."

"Yeah," Johnny says excitedly. He starts swinging back and forth, his hair moving with the wind. "I thought you weren't coming Simi, but I'm really, really, really happy you did. Let's play together."

"Yeah," she responds with glee in her voice. They start playing together, sliding down the steel slide, climbing the red jungle gym. Their giggles could literally be heard from a mile away.

I take the remote and close the TV. Smiling a sad smile ever so slightly, I let out a quiet sigh. "Well then," I say slowly as I put my head on the back of the couch. "Looks like it's just me alone like that."

Marissa looks over to me and I know she heard what I said. "I'm sorry Snow," she says as she comes and gives me a hug. "I know it's tough. This is just the life of a Top Agent."

I nod and close my eyes. Marissa's right. This is just the life of an agent. This is just my life. "Promise me you won't tell anyone."

            "I promise Snow."

Helga comes in asking if I knew where the tape was and I force myself to smile. No need to show weakness to the other agents. I lead her to the tape and continue my day trying to be happy.

I'm heading to my room to watch the sunset when I'm greeted by James and John, beckoning me over to the agency staff room where Marissa is already sitting.

I take a seat in a white leather arm chair, practically sliding off of it. John looks at James, Marissa and I with smiling faces, anticipating the moment he can tell us his news.

"So," he starts off, his hands bunched together as he leans and rests his elbows on his knees. "Since you've both turned fifteen and all, I've been thinking it would be a good idea if you both attend a real school-"

"Real school?" James says absolutely shocked. His jaw drops and his eyebrows arch up. "As in public school? With a bunch of low class idiots?"

"It's a very good school James," John tells us, laughing. "Amazing people, great teachers and James, this school, many of the students there get sport scholarships."

James' head perks up and his eyes suddenly have light in them. Agents, even if they're taught at the agency still can get to go to a regular university. James, even though he can get into any university with the help of the agency, wants to earn his way in. He needs sports considering his 2.0 GPA.

"Perhaps," James starts as he looks to John and I. "I might as well just go to this public school." I look at James very surprised since he was so quick to change.

John claps his hands together and smiles getting up. "Okay then, it's settled. Thank Marissa because it was her idea."

I glance over at Marissa wearily. This is what I wanted, isn't it? "I don't know," I say out of the blue. Why did you say that out loud? They probably think that you're scared. "There are people there that can-"

"Can what?" James intervenes. He looks at me like I'm crazy, raising one eyebrow. "Is Top Agent Snow afraid of cliques? Is the Snow afraid of high school teenaged kids? Is the Snow that literally handles international crime thugs afraid of a bunch of kids that are way under her level? You can't be scared Snow of these people. Especially these kids, I know you're a lot better than that."

My heart drops and so does my gaze. Why do they all expect so much of me? I start looking at my feet and remind myself. I am Snow. Top Agent. I'm the best spy that has ever lived. I can do whatever throws itself at me. I have no fears. Only obstacles.

I put on a smile and look at John. I don't have a choice but to follow my instructions. Besides, I'm supposed to be able to do anything. This is what I wanted. I wished to get to know normal human beings and this is my chance to be surrounded by two thousand of them every single day. "When exactly do we start?"

"In about a week," John says smiling. He grabs James by the arm and takes him out of the room before he can interrogate me any further.

I turn to Marissa, my eyes shooting darts. I don't get anguished usually but when I do, I'm frightening. "How could you?" I scold her in a whispered tone. "You promised." Marissa can't keep a secret, I should've known that.

"I had my fingers crossed," she tells me guilty. She moves in to give me a hug. I don't push her away. "I can't just let you be upset Snow. You're like my sister. Besides, public school is a lot of fun. My parents have me in one. Plus, you'll have James with you the entire time."
Right. I'll have James with me. No need for me to over react.
