Chapter One
"Hey, Chief, got that Dottie file you requested," I said, handing out the folder to the man in question. A folder containing information on the last Dottie sighting we had. The only lead we had to find her again.
He took it from my outstretched hand with a sigh, and I turned around to leave. "Oh wait, Agent Jones, one more thing I need real quick."
I turned around and walked back over to his desk, leaned halfway over it, and met him in the middle in a sweet kiss. It was over sooner than I had hoped, but it was the only one I had so far in the day so I'd take anything.
Letting out a sigh, I leaned back a touch to look into his face better. "I hate keeping our relationship a secret, it leaves me 'you' deprived."
Jack smiled at me, me doing the same once I saw how gorgeous it made him look. "Aww, well I thought it was rather romantic, very Romeo and Juliet-esque, no?" he asked and I laughed.
Of course, keeping this a secret was the only logical thing to do. Peggy and Daniel were the only ones in the office who knew and I'd like to keep it that way. If others find out, they'll think it's for all the wrong reasons, and neither of us want to deal with favoritism allegations.
"It is, but I'd also like to see my boyfriend more often than my boss and be able to do more than just stolen kisses when you ask me to bring you files. You should switch it up every now and then, some might get suspicious."
He chuckled quietly and snuck one more kiss before I pulled away. "Can't be too long, now Chief. I've things to do, places to be," I joked as I exited his office. I'd see him again before lunch most likely.
Back out in the bullpen, I did a quick scan and noticed not a single person cared about what I had been doing. The only person who tried to catch my eye was Martinez, but I looked away quick.
Joseph Martinez was here in New York now. After his whole ordeal of not wanting me to come up, he decides he's gonna do just that. The hypocrite makes me want to repeatedly sock him in the jaw.
I was very clear about my feelings, so I never had to work with him. We did one mission together, weren't even in the same area, and I still ended up yelling at him (in my defense, he screwed up and cost us Dottie).
So Chief Thompson did a good job of keeping us on separate missions. He told me one night that it helped that he was a bit less indispensable than me. I'm still not totally convinced he didn't just tell me that to make me feel good.
I finally sat back at my desk and worked on the files for the last mission we finished (failed) yesterday. Another Dottie one. It was getting more annoying than anything that we had yet to capture her. This game had been going on for months, although it felt more like years.
As I finalized the file and got ready to get it down to the file room, Peggy came in the office, and that's when I realized she was late. Very late. But she was on a mission.
Slung over her shoulder was a brown leather bag and she was pulling something out of it. She came up to my desk, and I expected her to ask me to follow her somewhere, but instead, she pulled my wheeled-chair away from my desk and over to hers.
Other agents looked over to what was going on, but no one focused for too long. Except for Martinez. He kept staring, and with one hard glare from me, he finally looked away.
Peggy stopped moving me when we got to her desk and sat down in the chair that I was now sitting beside. "Peg, what is going on," I whispered to her.
She started pulling things out of her bag and setting them out on her desk, placing a camera down as well.
"I think I have a lead on Dottie," she whispered back. Someone shifted in front of us and we looked up. Daniel was trying his hardest to act like he wasn't listening in.
"Just join us at this point, there's no need to sit and pretend you're not listening," I said, trying not to laugh. Even Peggy was trying not to laugh.
Daniel turned his chair around, ignoring the work on his desk, and put his elbows on the desk. "So, what's the situation?"
Peggy spread the things she pulled from her bag out on the table. Daniel and I started looking over them, and we both had the same thought as we looked up to each other and then to Peggy.
"She's a redhead?" we asked at the same time.
"It's just a wig. From what I gathered, she's assuming the role of an upper class, high society woman to try and infiltrate an upcoming party- well, upcoming as in tonight. She's most likely going to try and steal from some real upper class citizen," Peggy shared. "This isn't her first, either, she's apparently been doing it for a while."
But it didn't seem right. "This doesn't feel like her. She's not a common thief- there's some ulterior motive here," I said.
"Well, funny you say that. The item she manages to get off of each target is a tie-pin, but she always discards it somewhere else. It's an odd choice, but it must be something important she's looking for," Peggy explained. "Now what we have to do is figure out what it is and get it before she does."
Daniel clasped his hands in front of him and rested his chin on them. "We need to figure out how to start. You said tonight, right?" Peggy nodded. "Let's get the Chief, we've got only a few hours to jump on this opportunity."
Peggy smiled. "Don't worry, after that I've already got the four of us invited, he'll be on board. I overheard her at a dress shop where she was getting alterations. That's why I was as late as I was- I needed to get the invited secured."
I jumped up from my chair. "I'll grab Ja- the Chief. You guys get set up in the conference room," I said.
They nodded, and off we went. I knocked once on the door to his office before peeking in. Luckily, the Chief wasn't on the phone. "We've got something on Dottie."
The second her name was out of my mouth, Jack was up. "We?"
"Peggy and now Daniel. They're in the conference room."
We left his office and hurried over to the conference room. When the door shut and everyone was seated, Peggy explained everything to Jack. Then, he got up and opened the door.
"Martinez, Brown, Stephens, get in here!"
He turned back to us and immediately saw the look on my face. "Him?" I asked, quietly so the incoming agents wouldn't hear, but the venom was still crystal clear.
Jack sighed as he sat back down. "I know, I know. Don't worry, neither of you will interact."
Once the three new agents were inside, the door was shut again and they were brought up to speed. Martinez tried to take a seat next to me, but the glare I gave him had him quickly stepping away to a different part of the table. I felt like I was back in grade school. Or, well, back in my private school.
"All right, for those of you new to this we have been searching for a Russian assassin, trained since adolescence on how to blend in with crowds and kill with the closest object. Her name is Dottie Underwood." I saw how the other agents, Martinez, Brown, and Stephens, look confused at the fact that this amazing opponent of the SSR is a woman. I smirked at how unprepared they'd be.
"We met her a few months ago during the Stark case. She escaped us then and has been rather elusive since. This is the first good lead we've had in a while, so I don't intend to lose her again," the Chief continued.
I paid attention to Jack again as he started going over mission details. "Carter and Sousa are posing as a newlywed couple who are both from high society families while Jones and I will pose as another married couple. Martinez, Stephens, and Brown- you three will be watching the perimeter and making sure she doesn't escape.
"Carter and Sousa, your objective is to find her. From there, Jones and I will work on extraction. Stay on the radios at all times." Jack finished and stood straight. I never really noticed how he hunches over and leans on the table when going over missions then straightens at the end. "Open for questions, I guess," he said with a small smirk. We all chuckled.
If I were being honest, I was impressed with how he came up with all of this on the fly. It was really impressive.
But I did have a serious question. "And what will we do about the fact that Dottie recognizes the four people who are going in to find her? Won't she just bolt the second she recognizes us?"
Across the table, Martinez scoffed lightly. "That's where we come in. We'll make sure she doesn't get away," he said with an overconfident tone and he leaned back into his chair. He sent me a challenging look.
Rather than getting pissed, I shrugged. "Fine, we can go with that. But when we find you knocked out in an alleyway without our Russian, we'll know who's fault it is."
"Hey, let's cut out the childish arguments," the Chief cut in, but I saw my boyfriend Jack break through with the light smile on his mouth. It was gone before anyone else could see it. "And we do have a solution. The SSR recently hired some people who specialize in disguises. It'll be a... fun trial run."
Peggy and I shared a glance, both of us a bit worried about how this would go. I had a feeling Dottie would run the second she learned the SSR was on her tail, but she's a wild card. A part of me felt like she might just stay and chat for the fun of it before heading out.
"Well, then I guess we best get to work," I said.
The "work" was shopping for an evening gown. Peggy and I were severely lacking in that department, and it was going to be taken care of by the SSR since it was a mission, so of course we couldn't pass up the opportunity.
While we searched a shop together, we kept our conversation very quiet. It was unlikely, but we didn't want to blow our covers before we even had the chance to use them.
"Oh, what do you think of this one?" I asked, pulling out a gorgeous deep red number. There was even a small slit going up just to the knee.
Peggy smirked. "I think Jack won't mind seeing you in it."
The comment made me blush, but I grabbed it all the same. Who knows, maybe after this mission I'll be able to wear it out with him when we aren't working.
Peggy found a dress herself, a beautiful green one. We tried them both on, decided they'd be perfect, and got them rung up.
"I'm very curious to see what they've been working on while we've been away," I said as Peggy and I grabbed our respective bags and started walking out.
As we did, I accidentally knocked into a man who was coming in. "Oh, I'm so sorry," I immediately said, but he didn't say anything to me and kept walking. I didn't pay much attention.
Peggy and I made it back to the SSR and realized we'd only been gone about an hour and a half. "You think they had enough time to work?" Peggy asked.
I shrugged. "Who knows. I'd like to think Jack is responsible enough to keep everyone on track."
We walked into the telephone operators room and smiled at Rose. She immediately worked on getting us in and down to the new costume shop. At least, that's what I'd be calling it.
Peggy gave me a small look, but didn't say anything until we were in the elevator. "And what about Martinez?" she asked.
My face soured. "Let's just hope we actually nab Dottie. I have my doubts about this plan- Dottie is smart, disguises aren't going to so easily fool her. But we'll see."
When the elevator doors opened, my jaw dropped.
"Oh no."
A/n: Oh my gosh here it is!! I'm so excited to finally continue this series, because Agent Carter and Jack Thompson are so underrated and deserve so much more love. Can't wait to hear what you guys think!!
Also, am I posting this while in the middle of Hurricane Milton? Perhaps.
