| Chapter Twenty-Six |

The next day, Peggy and I walked in together with our arms linked. I still had my apartment at the Griffith, so I snuck Peggy in with me to grab her stuff from her old one they still hadn't messed with and she stayed in mine. She had told me that Howard had offered her, Angie, and I a place to stay at one of his very large houses. The two of them accepted, while I was just fine in my apartment at the Griffith. I hadn't been thrown out, yet.

"I know we talked a bit last night about him," Peggy started as we started to wait in the elevator. "But where do you and Jack go from here?"

The elevator doors dinged open and I shrugged. We stepped out as I answered. "I don't know, Peggy. It at least seems like we both want to be together but aren't there company rules and stuff?"

Peggy was about to respond, but an agent we passed started clapping. I was confused, and looked from him to Peggy, who was also confused. As we walked in the bullpen the other agents clapped. Compliments were thrown at us left and right, and I had a hard time figuring out who was saying what with how many people were speaking. We even shook a couple hands.

I shared a look with Peggy and we both laughed a bit, extremely lost and confused on the whole thing. When I looked right in front of us, I saw Jack standing there, staring at me, and clapping louder than the others. Peggy nudged me and I gave her a look that said, Not here.

Daniel got up from his desk and stood next to Jack, giving Peggy some of the same attention. I nudged her back, and she gave me the same look.

"Well," Jack started. The clapping had died down by now and it was just us four in the conversation while the others stood around and watched. "Good morning Peggy, Tiffany." We nodded in greeting and I couldn't stop from blushing just a bit. "You're here bright and early, I assume that means you'll be staying at the SSR?" Jack asked Peggy.

I smiled, knowing that Peggy and I talked about this last night. "Haven't decided, actually. I just came to pick up my paycheck."

Jack just nodded, understanding Peggy well enough to have his answer, and looked to Daniel next to him. Daniel nodded and said, "Well, we'll keep the desk for you, just in case."

Peggy hummed in response while Jack turned back to us. "She'll be back," he said simply.

He then stepped forward and tried to pull me to the side for a second, but a large group of men walked in. The one in front shouted, "Which one of you fellas is Jack Thompson?"

Jack and I looked at each other in confusion, before he stepped forward. "That's me," he said, and walked over to the men.

The lead man who did the shouting took his hat off and reached out his hand. "Walt Cooper, United States Senate," he introduced. Jack accepted the handshake with a small nod of greeting as Mr. Cooper kept going. "I just wanted to come down here and personally commend you for the fine work you and your team did."

Peggy, Daniel, and I all shared a look as the Senator kept going. "An attack on Times Square could have been a calamity, and what I hear is that you saved thousands of lives." Jack turned his head to look back at us as we all waited for his reaction. Peggy gave him a small smile. The man kept going. "The city and the country owe you a great debt. We need more men like Jack Thompson fighting for freedom and security! You're all lucky that you work for him."

Jack nodded and mumbled, "Just did what needed to be done." The two men shook hands again and the Senator chuckled.

They then turned around and started walking towards us and the chief's office. "You play your cards right, son, and you could get a congressional honor out of this situation," the Senator said. Peggy and Daniel stepped aside and let the two pass. "The president wants to thank you himself."

"Maybe next time I'll vote for him," Jack said. I chuckled lightly at the comment, and then shook my head. We all knew it was Peggy who should be earning this congratulations, but she hadn't said anything so I hadn't.

Daniel, on the other hand, was pissed. "How can you just sit there and take that?" he asked Peggy.

"Daniel," she said. I could tell she didn't care all that much, but it irked Daniel to no end.

I stood back and watched this unfold. "I'm gonna tell that senator what really happened- hell, I'll tell Truman himself!" he said as he started to go for the chief's office.

"It really doesn't bother me," she said.

He stopped and looked at her. "Well, it bothers the hell out of me. I saved that jerk's life," he said, then glanced over to me. "No offense."

I shook my head. "I'm not involved in this conversation."

Peggy shook her head as she looked from the office to Daniel. "I don't need a congressional honor. I don't need Agent Thompson's approval or the president's," she said as Daniel started to walk towards her. "I know my value. Anyone else's opinion doesn't really matter."

She walked by Daniel to her desk and smiled at him as she passed. He stood there for a second, and I could tell he was amazed at how Peggy handled all of this. I could also tell that he definitely held some feelings for her.

Before he could sit down at his desk, I walked up to him. "I can tell you have a thing for Peggy- it's a bit obvious to anyone who knows what to look for," I started. "I say go for it." He smiled at me and nodded his head, and I turned and sat down at my own desk.

"Uh, hey!" I turned and saw Daniel was looking at Peggy. I smirked and turned back to the stuff on my desk and pretended I wasn't listening, even though I very much was. "I was gonna... grab a drink."

"Right at this moment? It's 9:00 in the morning," Peggy questioned. I stiffed a laugh and kept listening.

Daniel laughed and clarified. "No, no. After I clock out," he explained. "Want to join me?" I held my breath and listened for her response.

I didn't hear it right away, so I turned around and looked at her. Her eyes moved from Daniel to me, and I mouthed "Say yes" while nodding my head vigorously. Daniel noticed Peggy's change in eye-line and looked back at me. When he did, I just spun back around and pretended as if I wasn't involved.

"Maybe another time, alright?" she answered. I groaned and let my head fall back. "I've got to meet a friend." I knew she was talking about moving into Howard's offered room, but I thought it was a dumb excuse. We'd be talking about this later.

"Sure. Sure thing," Daniel answered. He didn't sound heartbroken or anything, so that was good. "Another time." I turned around to look at the two of them. Daniel was now sitting at his desk with a smile, and Peggy was looking at him with a bright smile on her face.

I raised an eyebrow at her without Daniel noticing, and then looked at Daniel. "She'll say yes, Daniel. Trust me," I said. He nodded his head and I went back to work on closing the Stark case file.

My phone suddenly rang, which took me by surprise because I didn't think we were taking phone calls right now. I picked it up and greeted, "Jones speaking."

"Well well if it isn't the agent I sent up to Miami just to have her hang up on me oh-so rudely," Frank greeted on the other end.

I sat up a bit and smiled. "Well well if it isn't my needy ex-boss," I said back. He laughed on the other end, which was good because that meant I didn't hit a nerve. I chuckled too. "Look I'm sorry for hanging up earlier. We were working on this huge case and a huge thing happened and I needed to go," I explained.

"That's just fine, Tiffany, I'm glad to see you're working on some stuff. Can you spare actual details yet or are you still working on closing it out?" he asked.

"Funnily enough I'm working on that file now. I guess it'd be okay if I explained some stuff to you," I concluded. For the next few minutes while I worked on closing the file, I explained to Frank what had happened and how I got involved and all that. He asked questions every now and then, and I left out any personal details, so it turned out to be a very good conversation.

The events that just happened yesterday were out and Frank had just congratulated me on a job well done. "Now, you and I both know I don't really just call to check in and chat," he said.

I shrugged and physically closed the file and pushed it aside. Leaning on the desk with my elbows, I sighed. "I was wondering about that. Either I've made you soft or you've got something for me," I said.

There was a short pause and then Frank cleared his throat. "Before the chief's untimely passing, he told me about how you've lost a couple agents in the past week. I decided to send someone up there since I'm the only other SSR office in the country. Heard there's going to be one in California soon-"

"Okay, I also know you well enough to know when you're stalling," I interrupted. He sighed on the other end, knowing he'd been caught. "Let's hear it. Who is coming up to join me. Vasquez? Pines? Folley?" I asked, throwing out random names to see who I would be working with.

"Joseph Martinez."

A/n: Oop- if y'all don't remember him, he was someone Tiffany was friends with in Miami. The same friend who also didn't want her to move to New York and all that. So, let's see where this goes
