| Chapter Twenty |

We all sat around the office, avoiding shattered glass and scattered papers. Some men were being tended to. I sat on Jack's desk since it had been the closest, letting the tears silently fall. Jack walked over and sat next to me. We didn't exchange any words, he just brought his arm around my shoulders and let me cry into his jacket and rubbed my shoulder.

I heard someone hurrying over to Jack and I, but stayed down. "What happened?" It was Daniel. He sounded so confused and out of breath.

"They got Chief," Jack answered, his voice low and full of emotion. Daniel stepped back and leaned on the desk behind him. He let out a shaky breath and I could just tell he was having a moment. We all were, really.

"The blood," Peggy said suddenly. Jack nudged me lightly and we both got up from the desk and followed Peggy down to the lab. As we hurried, I wiped my tears away and tried to bury my emotions again.

When we got down there, Peggy breathed a sigh of relief seeing the vial was still in it's orb. The new problem: what did Ivchenko take instead? "We need to find out what Ivchenko took," I said.

Daniel nodded and took charge. "Search every crate." We moved quickly, looking through all the crates we could. It wasn't very long before one of the scientists opened up the crate we needed.

"Item 17," he said, grabbing our attention. "It's gone."

We looked at Mr. Jarvis next. "What's that do?" Jack asked him.

What we didn't expect was to see him shake his head and say, "I have no idea."

An agent came hurrying down suddenly. "We got a call from the police department. Something at the movie theater they want us to check out."

Jack, Peggy, Daniel, and I went down in a group to meet with the man in charge. "Are you the SSR folk?" he asked when we got there.

"What the hell happened here, detective?" Jack asked him.

The man could only shrug. "Hell if I know. I got 47 dead, heads bashed in, eyes gouged out- not a single survivor." Peggy and I looked at each other, both terribly confused as to what caused this and how.

We followed the man as he brought us into the theater lobby. Bodies were everywhere, covered in white sheets and being photographed by forensics. "Good lord," Peggy whispered.

"It's like some kind of monster got it. Never seen anything like it," he said.

Daniel turned to him. "All this happened inside the theater?" he asked.

He nodded. "This way."

Daniel and the man walked away while Peggy, Jack, and I looked at the bodies. I walked up to one that was just photographed and took a look at the injuries he sustained. Peggy and Jack came up and looked as well.

Jack moved the sheet down a bit further, and we saw the victim holding a giant tuft of blond hair. "No monster killed these people," Peggy said. "They killed each other." Disgust rolled through me and I couldn't help but feel nauseous. How could people be so cruel and monstrous?

We moved away from the bodies and went in the direction Daniel and the man went in. There were several other police men walking in and out of the theater so it wasn't too difficult to find the right one.

I walked in first, seeing Daniel leaning over something. Right when I was about to call out, he started coughing violently.

"Sousa! Sousa!" Jack called, and we made our way down to where he was with Peggy following behind. We all hurried over to him, Jack being the first one there. "Hey, hey. What happened?" Jack asked while trying to get Sousa to face him.

The last thing I expected to happen was for Sousa to grab Jack's neck and try to choke him. I gasped as Peggy hurried up to try and pry Daniel off of him. "Daniel!" she called out. He elbowed her right in the nose, and she knocked a light over as she fell away.

I ran up now, hoping to get him back down to Earth. "Daniel what is going on!" I yelled as I attempted to get him off Jack. He reached his hand back and grabbed my throat and started squeezing. Fight or flight kicked in as I tried to suck in some air, and I ended up grabbing something from behind me and whacked Daniel upside the head with it.

He went limp and fell forward, and I was able to suck in a breath and coughed. A police officer came over and handcuffed Daniel to make sure that if he woke up, he wouldn't try to attack anyone right away.

Jack sat up, coughing like I was. He looked at me, trying to ask if I was okay. I just nodded, and then looked at Peggy as she walked back over. She looked alright, and was overly concerned for Daniel and why he would do such a thing.

Back at the SSR, Peggy insisted on waiting with Daniel for when he woke up to try and get some answers. Jack and I agreed, and we went back up to the main office. The three of us had just talked to the scientists and given them the canister we found to see if they could figure it out. We left them with the warning "Don't breathe it in."

Agents sat around in the office. They were unsure of what to do at this point with their Chief gone, a strange happening at the theater, along with a Russian doctor and his assassin friend running around. Oh, and we can't forget Howard Stark and the fact that he's missing. No one knew what to do.

"Hey," Jack said, grabbing my arm lightly to stop me from going much further into the office. I looked at him, confused, and he just lightly pulled me away and towards a less crowded area. "Are you okay?" he asked, looking down to my neck and then back up at me.

On instinct I reached a hand up to my neck, but moved it back down and nodded. "I'm alright. You?" He nodded. We stood silently for a second, looking between each other and anything else around us. He was still holding onto my arm. "Is that all?" I asked and we looked at each other again.

Jack took in a deep breath and shook his head. "No," he said lightly, and he looks down at my lips. I felt us both leaning in and hoped that this wouldn't end like it did in Russia. His hand that wasn't holding my arm moved up to the side of my face, holding it lightly. So far, it seemed like we were actually going to commit this time.

He paused for a second, and I was worried that he was backing out and that I had spoken too soon. "Tiffany..." he whispered. I hummed in response. "Can I kiss you?" His voice was so quiet that I almost felt like I imagined it.

Hoping to God I didn't, I answered, "Yes." He leaned in the rest of the way and suddenly I was kissing Agent Jack Thompson. I moved my hands up to behind his head, one of them going up to tangle my fingers in his hair. The other hand moved from his neck to his shoulder. As for him, he kept the one hand on my face but moved the other wrapped around my back and I was pulled closer to him.

Neither of us broke the kiss, too scared to lose the moment we were in. It was true that I didn't like him too much when I first met him, but he warmed up to me. After Russia, I couldn't deny how I felt anymore. Now it all came together.

I started to lose air, so I finally pulled back and rested my forehead against his own. We both were breathing heavily and smiles were on our faces.

"Now how long have you been waiting to do that?" I asked him, looking up into his eyes.

He laughed lightly. "Honestly? Since I saw you sit down at your new desk," he answered. "I didn't like how I felt so I chose to be a jerk- I'm forever grateful you didn't completely shun me right then and there."

I laughed this time and shook my head. "Well, for the first day or two I didn't entirely like you all that much. I think it was Russia that... changed something," I admitted. "Peggy- when she pulled me away from the rest of the group- finally got me to admit that I had a stupid crush on you out loud."

My cheeks turned a bit red from this confession, and I moved to bury my face in his chest. His laugh rumbled in his chest and I found myself loving it. "Hey, now there's no need to be so embarrassed. I'm pretty sure Marge knew about our feelings before we did the observant little thing."

We pulled away from each other and I was able to get a full look at Jack's smiling face. After that, we were both smiling like sappy idiots- a new for Jack I'm sure.

But then my world crashed at a random thought that flitted across my mind. Jack must've seen my expression fall, because his smile turned to a look of worry and he asked, "Hey what's wrong?"

"Where does this leave us? Can we even date within the SSR like this?" I asked. His own face fell when I brought that up, and I could tell he was thinking it over. At least that was a good sign.

Finally, he shook his head. "It doesn't matter. I like you and no one can tell me I can't," he said, pulling me into a hug where his chin rested on top of my head. My own head snuggled into his chest, and for the first time in a while I felt pretty whole again. Well, since George. Now was not the time to think of the past, however, because I had a new future in front of me.

I smiled widely. "You know, this is the most emotion you may have ever shown to me," I said. Jack laughed openly this time and pulled me back slightly to bring his lips to mine. We both smiled in the kiss.

Footsteps coming toward us made Jack and I pull away and stand a couple feet apart from each other. We look over to see a scientist coming around the corner to us. "Agent Thompson, we have a conclusion on the gas canister," he said.

Jack nodded and looked at me. "I'm going to talk to this guy and then talk to all the agents," he said.

I nodded. "I'll, uh, go wait at my desk. See you later?" I asked and rubbed the back of my neck. Jack nodded. He looked over to the scientist, cleared his throat, and then went with him somewhere.

Like I told him, I went to my desk and sat down for a bit. It was hard to keep from smiling like a sappy little idiot. When I looked around at the other agents, however, I remembered the situation we were in and stopped feeling so giddy.

A/n: I hope y'all enjoyed that moment between Jack and Tiffany! I felt really weird writing it but I think it turned out pretty well!
