| Chapter Twelve |

A/n: sorry, this one is also long lol

I was up bright and early the next morning. When I got up and checked out where we had dinner, I saw that only two people fell asleep over there rather than in their tents. I chuckled and kicked both of their feet.

"Rise and shine, time to get going," I said. They grumbled and groaned the entire time, but did end up getting up. As I looked around the rest of our camp site, I saw the others waking up or already awake and just self reflecting for a minute. Peggy came up from around the corner, and I smiled at her.

"Get any sleep last night or did you all trade stories all night long?" I asked her when she got up to where I was standing.

She laughed slightly and looked out beyond the trees with me. "We all decided to go to bed at some point. Definitely not as early as you, however." She nudged my shoulder and I rolled my eyes with a smile. "Nothing too important though. Thompson talked a bit about his Navy Cross," she added, giving me a side-eye.

I looked at her, confused. "What's with the look?" I asked, narrowing my eyes.

"What look? I certainly have no idea what you mean?" She shrugged and looked up and away from me making it even more obvious.

"I don't know if this is what you are implying with that look, but I don't having anything for Agent Thompson other than respect since he's my coworker. Nothing more, nothing less." Peggy rolled her eyes and I could tell she didn't believe me.

I was prepared to stand and talk with Peggy for a bit longer, but then we started to move out towards the location. At this point, I still had no idea where we were going and what was really going on- I was just along for the ride.

When we did stop driving, I found myself looking at a distant factory like facility. Of course, we all knew there was more to it than that. Thompson was ahead looking at it with his binoculars. It looked like we were alone, and that was the ideal situation.

"Looks like we beat the bad guys here," he said, confirming my thoughts.

Dugan scoffed lightly beside me. "So we could have slept for another hour?" he asked.

Peggy rolled her eyes lightly and turned to him. "Well, then we wouldn't have the advantage of surprise, would we, Timothy?" she asked and gave him a smack on the back. I stopped a laugh from coming out and disguised it as a cough, because Dugan sent me a small glare. He was clearly not amused, while Peggy and I were.

After a small argument about teams, I ended up going with Thompson, Ramirez, Happy Sam, and Pinkerton. Peggy went with the others. "Don't do anything stupid," I mumbled to her as I walked over to Thompson. She sent a smile back to me, and we were off.

Peggy and the others went inside the building one way and I followed Thompson in another way. I felt awkward not saying a word to him the entire time, but we were busy looking out for each other and ensuring no one was going to jump out from behind the wall and shoot us. A very high stress situation and I was worried about the awkwardness between me and Thompson. My priorities need to be figured out.

We came to a hallway with a split, and we all looked to Thompson for guidance. "What do we do?" Ramirez quietly asked. He was the one brave enough to actually speak our shared question.

He looked at us for a second, and then down both corridors. "You three," he started, gesturing towards Ramirez, Happy Sam, and Pinkerton, "are going to stay here on watch. Jones and I are going to go down this first one and see what he find. Listen for us in case we need backup or anything."

The three men nodded, and Thompson looked at me. I nodded, showing I was ready for this, and we went down the shorter of the two corridors. At the end, Thompson carefully opened the door and I popped into the room with my gun up and ready. There was nothing there, so I walked in even further.

"Clear," Thompson said. I turned around and was ready to walk out with him when I saw he was staring at me. There was a silence between us as we stared at each other for a while. "Agent Jones, I-"

A gunshot that was far, but close enough to be concerning interrupted us. Both of our guns went up and we looked in the direction of the sound. Thompson gestured for me to follow him back out, and we joined up with the other three to go investigate the noise.

We came sprinting into a room where I heard Peggy yell something. The door was open, so we just hurried in with our guns up. The others were on alert, but relaxed just slightly when it was us.

"What happened?" Thompson asked as he lowered his gun.

"There's a good chance Leviathan has been alerted to our presence," Peggy said. I looked behind Peggy to see Dugan starting to walk away. He walked towards a man who was on the ground, and I covered my mouth to muffle a gasp. Thompson looked at me, and then down to where I was looking.

The others continued their small conversation, and I walked over to Dugan crouched next to Junior's body. Peggy came over a second later, and we watched as he removed the dog tags from Junior and bring them along. I felt like I couldn't offer many sincere words, so I settled for an empathetic look and nodded my respects to Junior.

"We're gonna need an exit out the back," Dugan suddenly said, back in mission mode.

Peggy argued. "We can't leave until we know who's setting Howard up." She thought for another second and then stood up. I did the same and listened as she started to bark out orders. "Dugan, Pinky, Ramirez, find a way out of here. The rest come with me."

And we did just that. I walked at Peggy's side and we were on alert the entire time. The woman was in full leader mode, and I was excited to see it. This was the first time I got to see Peggy Carter in action- it was inspiring.

Happy Sam at some point started taking the lead. As he rounded a corner, he held his gun up and shot someone. The rest of us rounded the corner and saw the body of a Russian guard laying on the ground.

"Sawyer, stay here. Keep an eye out," Thompson said. "Rest of you are with me." Happy Sam moved to get at a better vantage point, and the rest of us followed Thompson down a hallway. As we walked down, we came upon a cell and peek inside. There were two men there, cowering in the corner; it was probably the gunshots that made them uneasy.

Peggy and the others took care of talking to the prisoners, while I took a few extra steps down the hallway to act as a sort of look out. I heard enough of the conversation to piece together some things: the one talking the most was the other guy's psychiatrist and the other guy was the engineer. They never saw Stark and only had blueprints of his. Whether or not it was actually Stark who sold the 'Leviathan' guy the blueprints, who knows.

There was a sudden yell from Happy Sam and then a gunshot not long after. I spun around with my gun at the ready, and watched Peggy shoot out the lock of the cell. So it seems we were taking the prisoners.

Peggy and I went running, taking the lead while Thompson and Happy Sam brought up the rear in order to watch the prisoners. My breathing was heavy with adrenaline and we raced down hallways to try and outrun our chasers. I'm pretty sure I felt my poor side stitches pop open as I ran. Thankfully the adrenaline blocked out most of the pain. We turned a corner and Peggy started to shoot at some other guys.

Rather than finding an exit when we kept running, we got ourselves a dead end. Peggy tried to contact Dugan as we all took cover behind the big machines and got ready to defend. I was with Thompson and Li. We took turns poking out and shooting, ensuring the best use of our resources.

The prisoners had no idea what to do, and I was worried. As Agent Li started to yell, I looked over because something shiny had caught my eye."Yeah, use your big brain and-" My mind registered what I was looking at in time to push Li out of the way and take a bullet to the shoulder. I let out a small yell in pain, and then watched as Happy Sam got hit in the leg. Now we had to defend another side.

I wasn't about to let this stop me, so I got into a position where I could get the little girl who tried to kill Li while the others focused on the Russian guards. Despite the pain I felt in my shoulder, I got up and was able to get into an even better vantage point just in time for the engineer to take Happy Sam hostage.

"What is he saying? Is it bad?" he asked as the engineer yelled out in Russian. I understood a good bit of what was being said, and couldn't bring myself to answer. "It's bad, isn't it?" Peggy and I now had our guns trained on the engineer, ready to fire.

He continued to speak, and Peggy decided to speak up. "Doctor, this is not the answer," she said. There was a small bit of panic in her eyes, but I wasn't judging at all; I probably looked pretty terrified. "We will not be your leverage. We will not die before we are captured," she continued.

Suddenly, the shrink spoke up. "Nikola, listen to me. I want you to focus on the sound of my voice." I glanced over at him to see him holding a gun. Peggy kept her eyes trained on the engineer- Nikola. "Are you listening Nikola?"

Nikola spoke more angry Russian, so that was a no. "Then listen to me!" I shouted out. "You've got one chance of getting out of here alive, and it's because of our good graces! You kill him, and Carter over here will not hesitate to kill you instantly!" I took a breath and didn't see too much change, so I kept going. "You have until the count of three to put down your weapon and fall to your knees!" I felt extremely tense as I started the count.

"One!"

I had barely said the number when a gunshot rang out, and Nikola fell to the floor bleeding from his chest. My head snapped over to look at the other guy who immediately fell into a barrage of apologues and sobs. Happy Sam quickly limped out of the way and gunfire resumed.

Down by my feet, Thompson was sitting and looking as though he were panicking. Peggy yelled for Dugan again while I looked down at him. "Agent Thompson, what's going on?" I asked, trying to multitask. Shooting people and actually hitting them, talking to someone, and blocking out the pain from multiple wounds was very hard to do at once. "Thompson!"

When Peggy even asked for Thompson to get Li's ammo pack, the man didn't move. Something was wrong. I grabbed the pack for Peggy, who tossed it over to Happy Sam. Back with Thompson, I saw he was getting worse. "Jack!"

An explosion from my right caused me to duck down and stop firing. When I looked, Dum-Dum Dugan came through a hole in the wall. "Wa-hoo!" Dugan shouted as he loaded up a gun.

"Stop 'wa-hooing' and help!" she scolded as the other two came in behind Dugan. After a few more shots, Peggy yelled, "Everybody out!"

I didn't go right away, partially because I was too worried I'd get shot (again) but also partially because I wasn't about to leave Thompson there. "Jones!" Peggy yelled. "Get out, your injured!"

I didn't get a chance to argue, because the pain from my shoulder and stomach started becoming too much, and I knew Peggy was right. So with a little help from Ramirez, I hurried out and into one of the vehicles. My worry for Thompson grew exponentially now that I couldn't see him.

Lucky for my sanity, Thompson came running out and into the back with us not even a minute later. He climbed in and got settled next to me somehow, while the other shifted around on the other side and on the other side of me.

Dugan was next, and then Peggy was racing out with Russians not far behind. She jumped into the back and landed on her back in the middle of the floor. "Not bad for a girl," the engineer said, glancing between Peggy and I.

The other woman groaned. "I hate you all- except you, Tiffany."

We had to set up another camp before we could get back on the plane for the flight back home. I had told them I was just going to sit in one of the cars for a bit and try to relax. The truth, however, was that I needed to find a way to fix both of my injuries. The ride to the site, nobody really brought up either. I was putting enough pressure on both wounds that blood wasn't seeping out either, so there was nothing really giving my injury away.

Now that I was alone in the back of this vehicle, I was able to try and work on my injuries. The more pressing one at this time was the shoulder one, so I got some bandage materials from the front, sat down on a bench, leaned against the side, and started to peel off my tactical gear until I was left in my last layer of clothing before my undergarments.

This, of course, was when Thompson decided to check on me. "Hey Jones, just seeing if you- okay then." He had come around the back but instantly turned around when he saw what current state of dress I was in. Usually I cared about this sort of thing, but I was losing blood by the second so I just kept going. "Whatcha... whatcha doin' there Jones?" he asked, still turned away. His hands were on his hips and he was looking around everywhere like an awkward teenage boy.

Rather than keeping my eyes open to focus on Thompson, I closed them and continued on with what I was doing. "Fixing myself up," I responded in a lightly slurred whisper. I heard a shuffle and then felt the vehicle jostle slightly. Against my will, my eyes opened up to see Thompson had climbed into the vehicle with me. "What are you doing?"

He looked up at me, then back down to my shoulder. "Helping." I didn't protest when he started grabbing the things from me and dressed the wound on my shoulder. "I kind of remember you getting shot. You all right?" he asked as I started to fall asleep. "I was stuck in my head when it happened so, um, sorry for not asking you right away."

"It's fine- I'm fine- it's all fine," I slurred.

My shoulder was done in a couple minutes. "There, all set." He started to get ready to climb back out, but then he looked down at my hand that was still putting pressure on my side. "Wait... Jones what happened to your side. I don't remember anything injuring you there," he said.

I wised up a bit and looked down at it. "Oh yeah, I was kind of hoping to keep this one to myself," I said. When I looked at Thompson, he was giving me an incredulous look. "Don't worry it's not from this mission, it was from Miami. Not your fault."

"Not my- Jones I need to know about all healing injuries before sending you out in a mission," he said beyond annoyed at me. "My god... does the chief know? Did you hide it from him too?"

I shook my head. "No, he knew. My old boss let him know before I came up here," I mumbled. With the blood I've lost today, I've started to go in and out of consciousness. Thompson started to mumble some stuff about how 'the chief should have told him about this' and 'how dare he send me, and injured person, out on this mission.'

"Thompson." No reply. "Thompson." Even though it was louder, I got nothing from this complaining man. "Jack!"

"What?" He finally stopped his rant. With a gesture to my side, he let out a small, "Oh," and helped me dress that wound as well. This one was extremely awkward, because I had to roll my shirt up a bit and anytime he brushed my skin I felt... weird. It almost felt like butterflies, but that wouldn't make sense because I don't have feelings like that for Jack Thompson. Right?

This one felt like it was taking forever to fix, and yet I wasn't complaining. I had found it somewhat calming, him just bandaging me up because I was too out of it to even lift my hand up that far at this point. My eyes had even closed- well maybe that was because I had lost a lot of blood.

"I'm all done," he said. Disappointment soared through me when I felt him move away. My eyes opened slowly, and my movements were also slow as I tried to get up. Everything hurt so bad as I tried to work my way to a standing position.

I felt Thompson come up behind me and grab one of my arms. "Here, let me help," he said, quiet this time though. We managed to get out of the vehicle without anything else happening to me, and we stood right in front of it for a few seconds. There were no words spoken between us, we just stood and stared at each other. I hated it, but at the same time I didn't. I hated the fact that I didn't hate it.

"We should..." I started, trailing off from a whisper to nothingness. Why was I leaning in? Was he?

Right when I thought we were going to meet, Jack cleared his throat and moved his head down and our foreheads met. "Yeah, don't want to worry them," he said. My eyes closed briefly and I tried to hide my disappointment and disguised it as physical pain.

I used Jack for support as we over to the campsite. Like last night, everyone was laughing and sharing more stories. I felt a sense of happiness wash over me as I entered the area, and felt a smile on my face.

Peggy spotted me first, and got up when she saw me using Jack as support. "Tiffany, oh dear are you alright?" she asked. "I didn't know you got hurt anywhere else other than your shoulder-" She stopped to inspect me and then led me away from Jack to sit over where she was. I made and kept eye contact with Jack as Peggy continued to fuss over me.

There was definitely something going on between us, but I was too scared to admit it. Besides, what if I was the only one who thought there was something going on here? That was a bit terrifying to me so I was not going to admit it to him. Nope, not going to happen.

I felt a tap on my shoulder and looked over to Peggy. "Let's go," she said quietly. She ignored my confused look and carefully pulled me along.

"Stay close!" Jack yelled out from behind us. So, we stayed within the view of the others, but got far enough away to where they couldn't hear us. They were not allowed to hear this, it seems.

We stopped and she looked at me pointedly. "What?" I asked, very confused.

"Well, many things," she started, and I knew I was in for it. "For starters, where else are you injured? I know I didn't see you do anything other than get shot and I know nothing happened with Agent Thompson because I would have heard about it by now. And speaking of I want to know what the hell happened between you two because there is something there and I know what it is but I don't think you know and if you do know then he certainly doesn't know because he isn't the most open-"

"Peggy!" I called out, and she finally stopped to take a breath. "May I answer your questions now?" She nodded excitedly, and so I explained the basics to her. I got hurt right before I left Miami, and was very close to the end of my recovery which is why I decided to come on this mission (a bit of a lie but oh well) and that I didn't know what happened between Thompson and I. "It was weird, Peggy. He was helping me with my injuries one moment and the next I swear I thought we were gonna kiss."

She looked excited. "I knew it! I knew there was something going on!" she yelled out. I shushed her rather rudely but she quieted down. "You two should go for it. Who knows? You might be the one to finally melt his emotionless heart," she said. I smacked her arm lightly and suppressed a smile.

Looking over at Jack and the others, I breathed a sigh of relief. They weren't paying attention to us at all. "Peggy..." I trailed off and looked in the other direction now. The landscape was still very serene and beautiful- a surprise considering where we were. I finally looked back over to her. "Even if I do have feelings for him, there's so much that's pushing us apart that I don't want to even try and fight it."

"Tiffany, if you have fallen for him then why not fight for him?"

"I'm afraid of how much it might hurt if I lose."
