| Chapter One |

"Jones!" an elderly man called out from his office. I pushed my blonde hair out from my eyes and moved my attention from the file in front of me to the man calling my name. He motioned for me to come into his office, and I obliged. The file was placed down onto my desk and I stood up from the chair. Smoothing out my skirt, I click-clacked over to his office.

I stepped inside and closed the door. "Yes, Chief Campbell?" I asked the man. He was now sitting at his desk, and motioned for me to sit in the seat across from him. "Have I done something wrong sir?" I asked, worried now for my job.

"No Agent Jones, you have done nothing wrong. Well, at least that's not the reason you're here. No in fact, you're here because of your excellence as an agent down here. In fact, Chief Dooley called and asked if any agents were willing or good enough to come up to the New York unit. My first thought was you Tiffany," Chief Campbell explained.

I sat there, mouth agape, for who knows how long. "A-are you sure you want me?" I asked him. When he nodded, I smiled widely and jumped up from the chair. My legs brought me over to Chief Campbell and I shook his hand. "Thank you so much for this opportunity Chief!"

"Please, you don't work for me anymore, so it's Frank," he said. I nodded and thanked him again, this time as Frank. "You're leaving tomorrow so you should clean out your desk of your things and get home to pack. It's been great, Agent Jones. You will have an interview with Chief Dooley a couple days after you land in New York."

My eyes watered slightly and I thanked Frank once more before leaving his office. I quickly gather up my desk accessories, mostly just pens/pencils, a notebook, and a picture, and was getting ready to head out when someone called out my name.

"Tiff! Where ya heading?" I turned around and smiled at my office friend Joseph. He saw my face and his turned to a sad expression. "Did ya get fired?" he asked softer this time.

"No silly!" I smiled and laughed at him. "I'm getting moved to the New York unit! Ch- Frank said he got a call for more agents up there and he thought of me first! Gosh, I bet George'll be so excited for me!"

Joseph gave me a hug and said, "I'm so happy for ya Tiff. Miami sure is gonna miss you. Hope you give New York hell!" When I pulled back, there was something absent in his expression but I payed no mind to it. I was going to New York!

~~

"Absolutely not."

I threw my hands up exasperated and groaned. "George come on! I've got two tickets for a plane up to New York and a huge job opportunity when we get there! This is the biggest opportunity of my life and I'm not passing it up." I placed my hands on my hips and sighed, moving a hand to pinch the bridge of my nose. "Please George. I don't want to lose you either."

George walked towards his coat and I expected him to just leave me there, but instead he pulled something out of the pocket. I couldn't see what it was, but there was no need for guessing when he dropped down onto a knee. George showed me the box and opened it to reveal a stunning diamond ring. My hands flew up to cover my mouth out of shock.

"Tiffany Jones, I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I want us to get married and have a life, and possibly for you to finally get a rest and retire from the SSR." My eyes watered again and I was about to say yes, but then, "Only if we stay here."

My hands dropped from my face. "Are you being serious?" I asked him. He didn't get up and laugh, or crack a smile, or show any signs that he was just pulling my leg. "George I...I can't give this up," I whispered, my voice wobbling as I spoke.

George sighed and turned his head to the side, and then turned back to me. He stood up and held out the ring. "It's me or New York." My mind hurt as well as my heart, but I knew my career meant so much more to me than anything else.

It was silent for the longest time, with me thinking everything over. Honestly though, my mind was made up; I just didn't want to admit it. I walked over to George slowly and wrapped my arms around him. He thought I was staying, so he tried to slip the ring onto my finger. I pulled away from him before he could. "Goodbye then."

George was angry- no pissed. He really didn't want for things to change but these times were very changing. When he realized my mind wasn't being changed, he snatched up his coat and mumbled, "I'll pick up the keys to the house tomorrow morning seeing as you won't need this place anymore."

The house was quiet after George left. I had no desire to see him ever again after his fit, so I called up Joseph to ask for a favor. The dial tone merely went on for a second before Joseph picked up the phone.

"Joseph Martinez residence this is he how may I help you this fine evening?"

I sniffed and greeted, "Hey Joseph it's Tiff."

"Oh no why are you crying? Wait wait wait, happy or sad tears this time?"

"Sad...George proposed to me..."

"That's great news- but you're sad about it?"

"He told me it was either him or New York. Judging by how I'm reacting, I bet you can guess what I chose and how George reacted to that."

"Aw Tiff I am so sorry... I hate that you had to choose, but I think giving up New York is a fine choice when you have all this stuff here."

"No no, I chose New York Joseph." The line was silent. "I'm not giving up the greatest opportunity of my life. New York could open up even more paths for me. There are boys everywhere in the world, but there aren't jobs like this available anywhere else."

"Okay but Tiff, in your line of work it's gonna be so hard to find one of those boys. They need to be trustworthy, willing to let you do this-"

"Willing to let me do my job? Are you kidding with me right now Joseph! Oh my- just, I called to see if you could come by tomorrow morning and drop the house key off to George. I'll be gone before 5 am so the keys'll just be in the flower pot."

Joseph went for a reply but I slammed the phone down and unplugged it. I didn't feel like talking anymore. If they didn't respect my choice, then they could go dig a hole to China for all I cared.

My body was so tired, and I was pretty much packed and ready to go, so I just decided to sleep and be ready for the morning (I had packed before George got home since I was let off early). However the moment I got buried into bed, any hope of sleep disappeared. My mind raced with other things that I had to do. So, I got up and out of bed to finish the last few things.

"Just gotta pick out an outfit for the plane and make sure I got everything I need for the plane," I whispered to myself. I walked over to my suitcase to pull out an outfit for the morning. Inside there were a few dresses and some blouse/pants combos. For the plane, I figure a blouse and some pants would be the most comfortable. I pulled out a white blouse that buttoned down the front, and some navy blue high-waisted pants. "There," I said and placed the outfit over a chair next to my bed.

My carry-on bag was next. It was my bag that I mainly used in the office, but it fit a book so I figured that it would be good for the plane. There were a couple files left over in my secret spot, so I pulled them out and looked at them. The name 'William Ford' was on the front in black letters, and there was the word 'DECEASED' stamped in red letters right over the top of the name. My fingers lingered on the name for a bit. I shook my head and put the file away, and looked at the other one. It was the one I was to give Chief Dooley on the day of my interview, which was apparently was a couple days after I land in New York. It worked, as it gave me time to find an apartment.

Now that my carry-on was situated, I finally figured I could go to sleep. I stepped back into bed and wrapped myself up in the covers. My day tomorrow and the next would be simple: get on a plane from Miami to Atlanta since that plane was a bit smaller, stay for a couple hours, then get on a bigger plane from Atlanta all the way to New York. By the time I am supposed to land, it should be later in the day. Then I'll have two days in a hotel (or apartment if I find one really quick), and then my interview.

"Plane tickets!" I shouted. Once again, I got out of bed and checked to see if I had my plane tickets. They were sitting on the kitchen table, so I grabbed them and put them in my carry-on bag as well, inside of my book to keep them straight. "Now I'm good."

That process went on for the whole night, with me getting in bed and then thinking of something that is needed for tomorrow. It was an annoying night, but I did finally get some sleep at around 1:47 am. For 43 minutes. Then my alarm went off at about 2:30 am and I had to get ready to leave for my 4 am flight to Atlanta.

And I did. I put on the outfit I had picked out, curled my hair, ate breakfast, and brushed my teeth. Once all that was done, I plugged my phone in and dialed the number to get a taxi.

I think I found the only taxi in town at the moment to get me to the airport. "Good morning sir! How are you this fine day?" I greeted the driver as I got in the back seat. The driver didn't respond, so I shrugged and figured he was just tired.

The drive was nice, going around Miami again for one last time (for a while at least). We passed by so many different places that I remembered. However, something was wrong. These buildings didn't seem right."Wait, this isn't the way to the airport," I commented to the driver. He ignored me and kept steady on the road away from the airport. "Sir we're heading in the wrong direction! You need-"

"What I need is for you to shut up!" he snapped at me, and he pulled out a gun from under his leg. "You have somewhere to go before New York, Miss Jones. My boss ain't wantin' you to leave the town just yet."

My hand flew to the door handle and I opened it quickly before the driver had a chance to lock the door. I held tightly onto my bag and jumped out of the door. I barely heard the driver shout out "Dammit!"

At first I expected the driver to kind of just keep going, but he slammed on the brakes quickly and jumped out of the car himself. I flew to my feet and ran out of the way and got behind another parked car while I grabbed my gun from the bag. The driver shot at me and made sure not to give me any sort of window to get a few shots in on him.

The second he paused, I popped up and went for a few shots. I clipped his shoulder and shot the gun out of his hand. He reached into the car and pulled out a radio. "Backup! Now! By the bakery!" he yelled into while I tried to get more hits. I ran out of bullets so I had to duck down for a moment and reload while he got his time to shoot in.

I knew I had to get out of there before his backup came, but I couldn't risk getting shot. There was another pause so I went up and tried a couple more shots at him; he wasn't alone anymore. Seems his backup was nearby. Now he had 3 other guys with him, and they all had guns. I tried to shoot them, but my gun jammed and I had to duck back down.

"Stand down!" someone yelled. There was a very brief moment that I thought it was an SSR agent, but the moment went away when I had a gun pressed to my temple. "Hey there Miss Jones. You're a slippery one, ya know?"

A/N: Hey guys! Thanks for checking out yet another book of mine! This one is special to me because I absolutely fell in love with the TV show Agent Carter and hadn't seen too many books set in this time period when I first started it, so I decided to make one of my own! Since then I have seen more, and have read them because YES, but still really wanted to put my own story out there.

The whole book is finished at this point, so I will be able to update regularly without making you guys wait for another chapter or rushing out a sad little chapter just to meet the deadline. I figured this was the best way for my to do it.

However, I'll be posting Chapter Two with Chapter Three in two weeks seeing as how I'll be out next week.

Please spread the love and hit that little star on your way to the next chapter, because it's so motivating when I see people vote on my work.

Bye Lovelies!!!!!!!
