| Chapter Eight |
"Hello?" I greeted.
"Agent Jones. It's great to hear your voice again."
"Frank Campbell. It's good to hear yours as well," I said. I was glad I could talk to my old chief for a moment out of my day already. But, I knew there was something he needed to talk about. "Now I know you didn't just call to hear my voice. You got enough of it while I was still there," I said.
Frank laughed on the other end. "I suppose you're right Jones." Something in the silence shifted and I knew things were going to get serious. "I have some small updates about your case that I wanted to let you in on."
Ah yes, the kidnapping. That was certainly something I wanted to talk about. Part of me wanted to let him know about the attack on me at the hotel, but I certainly didn't want to stress the poor man out too much.
I was going to give a reply when Thompson came up to my desk and tapped on it impatiently. I sighed and said to Frank, "Hold on a moment, someone apparently needs to speak with me." Frank gave a response of understanding and I lowered the phone to where it was on my shoulder, my hand covering the bottom part. "Yes, Thompson?" I asked, a bit impatient myself.
"You can't take personal calls at work. Wrap it up and get working."
It took some effort, but I managed not to sigh and roll my eyes. "Hate to break it to you, but this call is work related and Chief Dooley knows I'm on it. In fact, he transferred it over to me. Thank you though," I said. Without waiting for him to leave, I put the phone back up to my ear and mouth so I could continue my conversation. "Sorry, I'm back," I said into the phone.
"Good. So, the details." Thompson shook his head and went over to his desk, which I noticed was right next to mine. Oh joy. "Edwards is refusing to talk. We haven't done everything but we've done a whole lot. Ramirez is helping a lot on the case too setting up searches and all the jazz. Teams have gone out and searched the entire warehouse you were in and have found nothing. Either they really know how to clean up after themselves or they have another guy on the outside."
I sighed and leaned back. "Well my guess is it's the latter. Those thugs don't know how to be organized for the life of them. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they had someone else on the outside." I thought for a moment, playing with a pen in my fingers. "It would have to be someone who can easily blend with crowds and know what we were planning. How else did they find out that I was going to the airport early in the morning?" I asked him. I was thinking out loud a lot, and after saying that, it made me think about something I really hoped wasn't true.
Frank knew too. "So you're saying there could be someone on the inside? Damn, now I have a mole in my office. Just what I need after sending away my best agent."
I laughed and said, "You didn't lose your best agent Frank. You still have an amazing office full of decorated men who are totally willing to help. And about the mole, I'm sorry. It just makes the most sense."
"Yeah you're right. Well, that's really all I have for you at the moment. I'll call with more updates soon. Do you have any updates for me?" he asked. It was like he knew I was holding out on him.
I sighed. "Damn, how'd you know?" Frank laughed on the other end and I just smiled. "Yeah, there was an incident at a hotel my first night. Nothing can be traced back to me though, as I used a fake name and cash."
"What the hell do you mean by incident Jones?"
"Incident as in someone broke into my hotel room and attacked me. For starters, I still knocked him out with an injury, and also I may have used a door to do the knocking out and said door may have broken and I may have just left all of it there." There was a loud sigh on the other end. "I left a very generous tip though and a note because I felt bad but I had to get out of there."
Frank was silent for a moment before finally saying something else. "Just please be careful agent. This is a weird coincidence to have someone prevent you from leaving for New York and then someone attacking you the day you get there. This is bad and I need you to be careful."
"Copy that," I said with a small laugh. We said our goodbyes and I hung up the phone.
For the next hour I sat at my desk and just worked on files. Once they were all done I carried my giant stack of completed files down to the file room where Peggy told me it was. The room itself looked like I thought it would, and it was pretty easy to file everything away.
It didn't take me as long I thought to be done, only a couple hours, and I didn't have much else to do today, so I decided to call it good and get home early. Maybe this would be a good time to go shop for some new work outfits as well.
I went back to my desk and started to put my things away and get my blazer on. "Leaving so soon?" I turned and saw Sousa looking up from his file for the first time in a while.
"Yes, well I don't have much else to do at the moment so I thought I'd go back to my apartment and get settled in, maybe explore the city just a bit more," I said. Sousa nodded and stood up as well.
He started to put on his own coat as well. "Well then I think I'll wrap up this case for the day and look at it with fresh eyes tomorrow. May I walk you out?" he asked. I accepted his offer and we walked out of the offices.
"So what's the case you have been working? Unless I'm not aloud to know," I said. The SSR was many things, secretive being the biggest. Many assignments, cases, or whatever you call it were on a need-to-know-basis and sometimes I didn't need to know.
"It's this whole conspiracy around Howard Stark and his 'missing' weapons," he said, doing air quotes with one hand while we walked. "We are trying to track him down and others who seem to have gotten involved."
I nodded, taking all the information in. "So it's a long file then, isn't it? And I'm probably the one who will have to finish it off and file it away," I said while a smile. It wasn't that I loved doing that, it's just that's what I saw myself doing for the foreseeable future. Sousa looked over and nudged my shoulder slightly.
"Hey, don't worry about it. I bet you'll start being assigned on missions soon. Chief just wants to make sure that you and other agents work well and get to know each other," Sousa said. I could tell some of that was just words to make me feel better, but in his defense they did make me feel better.
We walked outside and into the sidewalk. I looked over at him and smiled. "Thank you for saying that, Sousa. I've gotta head down this way," I said and pointed to the right. "You?" I asked back.
He pointed the opposite direction. "See you at work tomorrow then, Miss Jones," he said as his goodbye.
"I'll see you tomorrow at work Mr. Sousa." I turned and started walking down the sidewalk back to The Griffith Hotel.
As I walked, I thought about a lot of things. The main one being Daniel Sousa. Something about his demeanor told me he was flirting with me, but I couldn't say for sure. And honestly, I kind of wanted the answer to be no. Daniel was a great person, and any gal would be lucky to date him, but to me he's just a friendly face; the guy who helped me out and was the first nice person I met at the NY SSR. Besides, after the way my relationship with George ended, I don't know if I'll date again for a while. Work will have me busy anyways. Inter office romance was probably also against some sort of rule. I wouldn't exactly know since I've never had the need to know. It would be nice if it wasn't a rule though...
Why would I think that? Who in that building am I any sort of attracted to? The only other male agent I know is Thompson, and he's an arrogant jerk. What part of me wants any sort of connection with him? Probably the part of me that wants to forget about George and the horrible way things ended.
After those romance thoughts moved on, I thought about the other female I had in the office, Peggy Carter. I hadn't said anything then, but I sort of recognize her from being close with the recently deceased Star Spangled Man (I may or may not have gone to a show when I had the chance). There were implications that they had a romantic relationship themselves, so I was worried if I brought him up it might hurt.
I wanted to become friend with Peggy. She seemed like an amazing human being and a very good agent. Besides, she and I were the only active female agents here. If we didn't get along, then the office would be literal hell.
Before I realized it, I was already back at the Griffith. There were some girls wondering around outside. Some were in conversation with others, while the rest were just walking around and enjoying the fresh air. I saw a blonde woman close to the doors and figured I could try and talk to her. After all, I also still needed a good place to shop and get some other work outfits.
"Excuse me," I said as I walked up to her. She looked up from her book in her lap and smiled at me. "Do you know a good place I can buy some new looks? I need some for work."
She sighed and shook her head. "Sorry, but I'm new here too. I really have no idea where anything is either," she said. I sighed and looked down. "I'm Dottie by the way," she greeted, and held outa hand.
I shook her hand and said, "My name is Tiffany. Lovely to meet others here," I said. We let go and I bid a goodbye, then went inside to go up to my room. I figured I could ask Angie at dinner. There were some other girls I saw on the way up to my room, but I didn't know them and already took a chance with Dottie; I didn't have the want to socialize anymore today.
While I walked to my room, I started to look around for my key inside my bag. I pulled it out from the little pocket it was in, and held it in a way so I could just go and unlock my door quickly. Looking back up, I froze and nearly dropped my keys.
A/n: I forgot about how I did a lot of cliffhangers for no real reason ha! Anyway, who do you think it is? Comment guesses! If you've seen the show, you should know ;)
