Chapter 1: He's Back

Song: Immortals by Fall Out Boy

19 January 2024
Camp Half Blood
1600

Going back to camp after eight years was admittedly difficult.

I'm twenty-six now, even though technically Annabeth and I both accepted partial immortality at nineteen along with the rest of the heroes of the war.

As I walk through the borders, passing an ever familiar dragon and pine tree, I am immediately greeted by an extremely surprised Centaur. This is all pretty nostalgic, I must say.

"Percy my boy!"

I chuckled quietly. "Great to see you as well Chiron."

He looked me up and down, slightly shocked at my appearance.

"You clean up well." He stated.

"Ah, the suit? Requirement of the job."

It's not like I ever actually wear the tie or button the shirt all the way.

"What are you up to nowadays?" Chiron asked me.

"I'm an accountant." I deadpan, putting a serious expression on my face.

Chiron looks at me in surprise and confusion, then begins laughing.

I smile and start laughing with him.

"Okay, so what do you really do?"

"That is, ironically, classified." I laugh. My fatal flaw won't let me lie to him wholly, so I just leave out some information.

He stares at me in disbelief, then laughs at the irony himself.

"You are just one best kept secret aren't you, my boy."

"You can say that again. Have the others visited recently?"

"The hunters arrive tomorrow, Nico came by just last week, Annabeth left a few hours ago, and the Romans as well as Piper stop by about every other day thanks to the portal between camps you asked for."

I smile at that, and internally grimace at the thought of Annabeth being here recently. I refuse to let the emotions show, however, and remain calm.

"I suppose I'm the last to join the party, then?"

"It has been a while, what kept you?"

"This is my first day off in two years, ever since..." I trailed off.

"Yes, I heard about Sally and Paul. I'd apologize for your loss, but we both know that never helps."

"Thank you, now if you don't mind I would like to change out of these clothes and meet up with some old friends. I only have a week of vacation!"

"Of course, Percy."

With that I head to my old cabin, nodding to Mr. D as I pass him.

"Peter Johanson. You've finally returned."

"I see you haven't changed at all while I've been gone, Mr. Diet Coke." I reply smoothly, continuing on to cabin three as hints of anger and respect flash through his eyes.

I enter my cabin to see that not much has changed, save the thick coat of dust that envelopes everything.

I use my powers to turn the fountain back on, and use droplets of water to wash everything without soaking the place, a task accompanied with a slight tingle in my gut.

Something I picked up at work, very handy when cleaning blood stains from walls of places you weren't supposed to be in.

I change into jeans and a CHB t-shirt. I haven't dressed this casually in years. I felt off guard without the gun I had become accustomed to carrying.

Some humans are worse monsters than actual monsters.

After two years of occasionally even sleeping in a bullet proof vest, I felt exposed.

I pull my new vest on under the t-shirt, check on riptide in my pocket, and strap the gun to my holster on my back. I put my trusty leather jacket over it so as not to alarm anyone about the gun. Thanks to advancements in technology, the Kevlar is super thin and practically just a bullet-proof muscle shirt. It's the lightweight version though, so I would still need a thicker vest in the case of a shotgun or something.

It's hot material, but I've dealt with worse. Besides, if Thalia sees me I may need the vest.

I was still wearing the watch/shield Tyson gave me, although I had it tweaked to actually tell time as well, courtesy of a favor Hephaestus owed me.

I walk over to my wall of pictures. It's just as I left it.

There are pictures of Annabeth and I, the seven, Nico and Will, Reyna, Leo and Calypso, Thalia and the hunt, Jason and Piper, all of us, I could go on and on.

I can't lie to myself, I miss the old days. Before I got captured by the FBI on grounds of being a terrorist and then roped into being an agent myself.

Yeah, life has a funny way of working out like that.

At least I get paid decently, and since I'm immortal- which sadly the FBI knows- I get to work for them forever.

Sarcastic yay.

I'm already set to be level seven, there are only eight levels. At this rate, I'll become Director, have the demigod files erased, and retire early.

Hey, a guy can dream can't he?

The conch horn signaling dinner sounds, breaking me out of my thoughts.

I get to the dining pavilion first, and have already sacrificed my food by the time the others enter.

"PERCY!" Someone yells from behind me.

"Piper, Leo! Great to see ya!" I smile at them.

The campers that have trickled in are noticing me now.

The older ones are staring in shock, younger whispering about who this new older guy at the Poseidon table could possibly be.

"Percy Freaking Jackson!" Leo bro hugs me.

"Leo McShizzle Valdez. Long time no see."

"Holy schist, dude! It's been like eight years!" Jason exclaims, finally entering with Reyna, Frank, and Hazel.

"I suppose it has. How've the camps been holding up?" I ask, then bite into my burger.

"Not the same without you. How long are you here for?" Frank replies. They're all sitting at the Poseidon table. It's not like he actually cares about who sits with his kids.

"Just the week, then I go back to work. This is my first day off in well, two years." I chuckle dryly.

"Why are you so stiff dude? Loosen up." Jason of all people says.

I raise an eyebrow at him and say "Comes with the job description. I suppose I'll work on it." I reply, taking a sip of my blue cherry coke while slightly relaxing my posture.

"What exactly is this oh so mysterious job of yours, anyway?" Reyna asks.

"I'm a security guard for B-list celebrities." The less they know, the better.

"You? A security guard? I don't buy it. What do you really do?" Piper tries to charmspeak me.

"Nice try, Pipes. But I'm not lying and I can't be charmspoken anymore. You know that."

"Had to try." She shrugs, before taking a bite of her veggie burger.

Suddenly Chiron speaks up, banging his hoof on the ground repeatedly to get our attention.

"Campers! I have a few important announcements for you all before campfire. First, tonight we welcome back a great hero, Percy Jackson!"

Cheers go up all around, and I just cock an eyebrow and shrug off the attention with a small wave.

"Second, tomorrow we will be joined by the Hunters of Artemis, therefore we will have our honorary Capture the Flag game. Team Captain position shall be decided now. Are there any nominations?"

"Percy!" Jason yells.

"I second that motion." Piper.

"Third" Reyna.

"Fourth." Nico.

"Fifth." Will.

"Sixth." Leo.

"Seventh." Clarrise.

"As this motion only requires five votes not including naysayers, Percy it is." Chiron chuckles as I roll my eyes at everyone's antics.

"Enjoy the campfire. You are dismissed." Chiron says.

"Well that was certainly eventful." Reyna states.

"I'm so ready to see Thalia again!" Jason smiles excitedly.

"I'm not! Do you have any idea how hard that immortal woman is going to slap me?" I exclaim.

Everyone laughs at my predicament.

"You're fault for disappearing on us, Perce." Nico says.

"Yeah, sure it was."

They know nothing, and they can't know anything unless something makes me reveal myself to them. Rule number one of being a field agent.
