CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO

My feet take careful steps towards the large government facility. A large, grey building about thirty miles from Stephen Strange's sanctuary. Tony says that this is where the new mutants are being kept. In iron cages and metal prisons. Yeah, okay, we'll go with "kept". More like imprisoned. Even the good ones, or ones who have control of their powers are here. Sometimes I really hate the government.

Last night had been the night we decided what to do about Black Death and everything he's done. Many opinions were voiced again, many thoughts were given, but with the information Stephen gave us, we came to one unanimous conclusion: Black Death must be stopped at all costs, no matter the costs.

My mind flashes back to that hour when we had talked.

"I think I know the source of his power," Stephen had said, entering the room with the gradure he left with.

All the Avengers were on edge. I had been clinging to Pietro like my life depended on it, holding his hand with such might of the mighty Thor. He kept whispering soothing things to me to calm me, but nothing would do much now. The closer we got to Gregory, the less still I can be.

"Tell us," Tony said, and he sat up straighter at the table.

"It's another infinity stone," Stephen said, and he showed us a picture from on of his books. "I believe it to me the Soul Gem."

"The Soul Gem can take control of or even steal a person's soul," I said, recalling my comicbook memory from my world.

Stephen looked at me with surprise. "Yes, that's absolutely true. How did you-?"

"-Other worlder, remember?" Tony said. "That's great. Fantastic. But how did he start turning dormant mutants into living ones?"

"I believe that the Soul Gem can do that," Stephen said. "More than just souls, it is my belief that this infinity stone can change a person's power. Possibly it can give the dormant mutant gene enough energy to surface, when normally it wouldn't."

"So an infinity stone is behind this?" Thor asked.

Stephen nodded. "This means that we must stop him at all costs. You remember what the Mind Gem did, the Power Gem, the Reality Gem, and the Space Gem. Do not underestimate their power."

"I agree," Steve said. "We need to act quickly."

"I have an idea," I said, turning to Steve.

He nodded to me, encouraging me to speak. "Go on."

"We should ask the mutants he created for help."

Tony groaned. "Come on, really?"

I raised an eyebrow. "What's the problem, Stark?"

"They're in the middle of a government building. Every single one of them."

"They're being guarded 24/7," Sam adds. "I have friends on the inside. They said that they're being put in prisons and being evaluated for power level and power type. There are over 2,000 new mutants, and they're all under government surveillance in the Trask-Striker Building in Brooklyn."

"Every single one of them?" I asked in horror.

Sam nodded, a sad look on his face. "Afraid so."

"I checked in with my guys in there as well," Maria added. "Same story. Two thousand new powerful people and the government is controlling them all."

"We need to get them out!" Wanda shouted. "That is madness! They have done nothing wrong!"

"Not now," Steve said. "Clear and present is Black Death, but we might need help. Like Glory said, I think we should get some powerful help."

"Break into a government facility?" Clint asked.

"In case you hadn't noticed," Tony said, "we're not exactly on the government's favorite list. We ran when they wanted everyone to stay."

"Okay, Stark. Do you have any better ideas?" Pietro asked. "No, go on. Tell us your master plan. I assume you have one." He waited for Tony to answer, but nothing came. "Nothing? Really? There is no surprise there."

"Pietro." I placed a hand on his arm, attempting to cool him off. "We're all frustrated and trying our best."

"No, he's right," Tony said, rubbing the back of his neck. "I got nothing." He sighs, looking defeated. "Fine. Government break in it is."

Clint chuckled. "Sounds like fun. When do we start?"

My mind flashes back to the present as Pietro takes my hand in his as we sneak up behind the grey building. "Are you ready to break the law?" he whispers to me, crouching behind the barbed wire fencing.

I smirk. "I've dreamed of doing this my entire life."

While Vision shorts the security cameras behind the building, Wanda does her magic on the two security guards. They fall to the ground, asleep but not dead. Vision unlocks the doors for us all, and the flying heroes help the ground-bound ones over the fence.

We enter the building, a quiet, white hallway awaiting us. Wanda and Stephen create a barrier around us, making anyone who might see us believe that we are staff and no one important. It's a genius plan. Nearly foolproof.

Nat, Tony, Vision, and Maria work on the computers. They search for certain mutants. People who are good, who have power, and who might be willing to help us defeat Black Death. They come up with a list of five people, and they are the following:

Morgana Summers, cousin of Scott Summers and eighteen years old. She has the ability to use sun or any light beams to her will, whether it be burning, lighting, or radiation.

Cole Roman, thirty five years old. Cole has the ability to bring his imagination to life. He can use art, words, or just thoughts to create things from nothing.

Roran White, fifteen years old and distant relative of Charles Xavier. He has the power of building things out of any material available. He can make buildings, weapons, shields, or even fake soldiers from any material around him.

Katie Mateese, a twenty year old girl who has the power of controlling water in any state: vapor, liquid, or solid.

And lastly, my heart drops at the last name they pulled. My long time best friend, Aspen Penrose-Spencer. Twenty four year old Aspen is a energy absorber. She can take the kinetic energy from bullets, other powers, even an atomic bomb, and she can reuse the energy and aim it towards a certain object or person.

"Pietro, t-that's..." I trail off and point to the name on the list. My eyes grow wide and tears form in them.

"Aspen," he whispers, and turns to me. "Oh no, baby, I'm so sorry." He hugs me to him, cradling me in his arms.

"You know her?" Nat asks gently.

"She's my best friend since childhood," I mumble. "She's such a good person. We have to get her out of here, please Nat."

She nods. "Alright. You and Pietro get your friend. I'll go with Maria and Steve to get Katie Mateese. Thor and Tony, you go get Roran White. Sam and Carol, your get Cole Roman. And Rodney and Vision, you get Morgana Summers. Wanda and Stephen will stay here and cloak us all, and Clint will guard them." Nat turns to Wanda. "Make sure that the people we're trying to get can see our true faces, okay?"

We all nod and hurry towards the cell numbers that our mutant friends are being held in. One name and only one is on my mind as we hurry through the halls: Aspen.

"Are you okay?" Pietro asks.

I nod. "I need to make sure she is okay. I have to see her."

"She will be okay, Glory. She is a strong girl."

I smile slightly. "Yeah, she is."

When we reach the cell, I see her sitting on her bench through the tiny window. Her long, brown hair is tangled. She wears only a hospital gown. Her face is dead in emotion and she seems to be somewhere else.

I click my ear piece, and say, "Vision, open the door to cell X117, please." The door begins to open. "Thank you."

Aspen looks up at the sound of my voice, but says nothing. "Aspen?" I come closer to her. "Aspen, it's me, Glory." I lean down to her level. "It's me. I've come to get you out of here."

Aspen's face remains the same, cold, dead eyes staring at me. "Who are you?" She can barely talk. "So cold..."

"Hold on, sweetie," I say, waving Pietro over. "We're going to get your out of here, just hold on."

Pietro picks her up and we start to walk back towards the computer room where Wanda, Clint, and Stephen are. When we're about halfway there, I pass a cell with a man with moppy black hair banging on the door, and if I hadn't seen it myself, I never would have believed it. He keeps mouthing, "Glory!"

I backtrack to the door and my mouth drops in shock. "Vladamir Penrose-Spencer?" I open the door, and he smiles at me. "What the hell are you doing here?"

He pulls me into a hug, clearly better off than Aspen. "Glory, it's so good to see you! How the hell did you get in here? They guard us 24/7!"

"It's a secret. Why are you here?"

"I was affected, just like everyone here," he says.

"I do not mean to break up a happy reunion," Pietro says. "But we need to get the hell out of here!"

I nod. "Of course. Vlad, we have Aspen."

Vlad rushes to Pietro who holds Aspen. He gently touches her face, his eyes showing love. "My god, what did they do to you, my sweetheart?"

"Come on," I whisper, hearing voices come around the corner. "We'll explain later."

We hurry back to where the Avengers are meeting and make our escape from the Trask-Striker building. No alarm was set off. It was a success. The five people we set out to find were able to come with us, and I found Vlad as a bonus.

When we arrive home, Aspen and another boy, Roran, are set up in one of Stephen's extra rooms. They were unconscious, or at least partly so, when we got them out from the facility. The others were wide awake and willing to help.

I stay by Aspen's side for the hours it takes for her to wake. The rest of the Avengers fill in the newbies on what is happening, what the bad guy is, and what the plans are. They explain what their abilities are and how well they can control them. The only one who stays with me is Pietro, but that's no surprise. He's the only one who knows how much Aspen means to me. Her friendship has gotten me through the hardest times in my life. She is more of a sister to me than my own flesh and blood is.

Pietro lays me against his chest, setting me on his lap as I fight sleep. "Why do you have to be so damn comfortable?" I ask, snuggling into his warmth.

He chuckles, resting his chin on my hair. "I love you," he whispers, wrapping a blanket around me.

"I love you, too," I reply, lifting my head and giving him a kiss before laying back down.

I stare at Aspen, watching the rising and falling of her chest as she breathes in fresh air. "Do you think she's okay?"

"I know she is," Pietro whispers, rubbing my back. "Tony says it's just some sedatives they gave her to keep her asleep. They must have feared her power."

"The ability to absorb kinetic energy," I mumble. "She could get out of there easily." I sigh. "She never would have hurt them."

"They did not know that."

"She would never hurt anyone."

Aspen's eyes fly open and she sits up straight, looking around the room confused and scared. Her hands are out in front of her, her palms sparking white with energy. I jump up from Pietro and rush to her side. "Aspen, Aspen, it's me!"

She looks at me. "Glory? Where the hell am I!"
