CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

The very next day, Pietro, Wanda, and I march up to the conference room where we had called an Avengers meeting. The only ones who aren't present are Steve, Sam, and Thor. My hands shake with anxiety. My abilities are going to freak them out, I know it.

Pietro walks up behind me and wraps his arms around me. "Don't fear, Glory. I am here."

Simple words never felt so good.

Before we enter, Thor walks up behind us. He smiles and greets us. "Hey, Thor, you're back!"

"Yes, I have returned from Asgard," he answers. "I bring news of your Einstein-Rosenberg Bridge and your abilities."

"You know of my powers?" I ask, not very surprised.

"Yes, Lady Glory. Heimdall saw what you are capable of, and I must say, you are a very powerful mutant."

"She does not know her true potential yet," Wanda says. "When I looked into your mind, I saw a huge power. Something much greater than levitation and telescopic vision."

"You did?" I ask.

She nods. "We should talk to the Avengers about this now. Lead the way, Thor."

Thor opens the door for the three of us and we walk in to Tony leading a conversation about some funny story. Everyone is laughing. I turn to Pietro, and whisper, "Maybe I shouldn't do this."

"You told me to not let you change your mind, Glory," he says, conflicted. "Please, do this for yourself. You will feel relief. I promise."

I nod, reassured. He kisses me softly, prolonging it before we break up the causal talk. Tony turns to me, and asks, "So, Glory, what's this emergency you called us all in for?"

My throat seals up; I can't speak a word. I feel my mind shutting down. Anxiety takes over and my fight or flight instincts kick in. I hear a crack behind me and then a loud shattering noise. The vase on the table is in a million pieces, looking like it collapsed in on itself. Tony raises an eyebrow and the rest of the Avengers look at me with cautious eyes.

I turn around to face Pietro, and mouth, "Help me," with my eyes wide.

Pietro nods and begins to explain everything. From my vision issues in my world all the way until yesterday afternoon when he first witnessed my powers. Wanda adds notes every now and then about what she witnessed in my mind.

They listen intently, looking at me every now and then from the corners of their eyes.

When the Maximoffs finish, Thor says, "Heimdall saw all of this. He knew something was strange about Glory, but now he knows why. I went to the elders with him to seek their knowledge, and they told me what might have caused the portal and Glory's powers."

"Do tell," Rhodey says.

"The elders believe that someone of immense power created the Einstein-Rosenberg Bridge. It was not a natural phenomenon. A mutant, perhaps a god from my realm caused it. He used the lose places in time and space to slip Pietro through to another world."

"So, let me get this straight," Tony says. "Some guy created a wormhole and threw Maximoff #1 in? For what purpose? Why does he care? No offense." He nods towards Pietro. Pietro returns it. "What good does Pietro living do?"

"It is referred to as Planeswalking," Thor says. "He would create a portal to an alternate reality. There are unfathomable numbers of these realities, for every decision made constructs the world we know. All these worlds are connected in the universe, but hardly anyone goes between them. As for why, I do not know. Maybe he is planning something bigger."

"Maybe he himself wishes to visit another plane of existence," Vision adds. "Maybe Pietro was a... trial run of sorts."

"But again, why?" Nat says.

"I've said it before, and I'll say it again," Clint adds. "Portals are doors. Doors open from both sides. Maybe he wants another ugly mofo to come from her world."

I laugh. "The worst we have right now is terrorism, and they're just people. Trust me, there are much worse things here."

Tony rubs his head, trying to focus. "What are we missing? What is so important about going from reality to reality?"

"How about we forget about the why and focus on the who," Wanda says. "For now, who cares why. Who would do this? A being with such power could tear this realm apart."

"If he wanted us dead, we'd already be dead," Tony whispers. "He waited five years in this world. He must be desperate."

"Cannot you all focus on the task at hand?" Pietro asks, impatiently. "Cannot you see Glory is scared of out her wits? She is terrified that you all will throw her out. She begged me to explain everything."

"Pietr-" I start, but he cuts me off.

"-No," he says. "No, please. Let me finish." He turns back to the Avengers. "She has immense power-"

"-that she may not be able to control," Rhodey says, nodding towards the broken vase. "She got a little anxious and shattered glass. What happens if she gets angry? Or threatened?"

"She is not to be controlled," Wanda hisses, her eyes turning red. "She is not a puppet."

"Tangled in strings," Clint sings from the background, and Nat hits him over the head. "Ouch," he mumbles, giving her the death glare.

"Can I speak?" I ask, as everyone starts giving their opinions. They quiet down and turn to me. "I'm not normal, that's for sure. I know I just arrived and brought someone back you thought was dead for five years. I brought up a lot of bad memories, I know. I know someone probably brought Pietro and I back, and I'm guessing that his or her reasoning isn't friendly, but you have to give me a chance.

"As I've told Pietro and Wanda, I looked up to you all for a long time. I grew up with your stories, your demons, your victories, and your failures. I dreamt of one day becoming a hero like you. I never dreamed I'd actually end up here. For once in my life, I am able to do something spectacular.

"So when I say that I want to help, believe me, I will help, with or without your approval. If you don't want me and my powers around, fine. I will leave and you won't have to deal with me, but I will become a helper to the people, an Avenger or not."

I turn to Tony specifically. "I know you want to do everything to make up for Ultron, but do not try to stop me from doing right. Do not get in my way. Do not interfere. I was given these powers for a reason. I will not allow anyone to cause me to waste them."

I hear slow clapping behind me. I turn, seeing God's Righteous Man standing behind me. He has a half smile on his face, full uniform on, nodding his head towards me.

"Well miss..."

"Glory Northern."

"Well, Miss Northern," Steve says, coming up to me and shaking my hand, "if you don't want your abilities wasted, meet in the gymnasium at 0600 sharp."

"You know," Tony says, as he grabs shwarma from the delivery boy, paying him a handsome tip. You should see the kids face. "I wasn't going to judge you."

"Really? You, the guy who thinks the Avengers should be disassembled?"

We had all decided to have a "group bonding session" after the heated conversations of earlier this evening. Thor suggested going out for shwarma again (he thoroughly enjoyed himself last time), but everyone agreed that take out would be best.

Clint chuckles at my comment, giving me a thumbs up.

"Yes, actually," Tony throws everyone their bag of food. "I was planning on saying that I know how it feels to have something happen to you, and you don't know why at first. All you can do is cope." He takes a seat beside me and hands me mine.

"Well... thanks." I smile at him.

"'Sides, if I want to be mad about something, I have the reason right here." He points to his invisible goatee.

I laugh, throwing my head back. "Really? You still pissed about that?"

"Hey! That beard was a work of art!"

"Tony, the beardless look does not suit you," Thor says, mouth full of food.

Tony rolls his eyes and motions to Thor. "Thank you, mentally sane person... god... Asgardian... whatever."

"Who did what now?" Maria asks.

"Wanda and I shaved Tony's beard off." I give Wanda a high five, and we giggle like little schoolgirls.

"Wow," Rhodey laughs.

"I thought you were just trying out a new look, Tony," Steve says, smirking.

Tony glares at him. "Dare you to try such a majestic beard."

Steve pauses, considering it. "Nah," we all say in unison.

I laugh out loud. I'm the only one here who knows Chris Evans has a beard addiction. "What is so funny?" Pietro asks, smiling at me.

"Oh, oh nothing. Just something funny from my world." Steve looks at me like he's waiting for an explanation. "The guy that plays you in the movies has a small beard issue. He loves them, a lot."

Steve groans. "Hurray."

"You watch these movies?" Nat asks. "How do they make me out?"

"Kick ass and beautiful," I say, honestly.

She nods her head, smiling.

"Oh, by the way, you inspired me to cut my hair short. Well, it was short in my world."

"Really?" Nat asks, surprised. "Us redheads gotta stick together."

"We'll take over the world," I agree.

"What, my short hair not good enough for ya?" Clint asks, posing like a female model, placing his hand on his hip and doing the duck face while batting his eyelashes.

"Clint, you are quite possibly my favorite," I say, trying to talk through my laughter.

"I thought I was your favorite," Pietro grumbles, looking heartbroken.

"You are, Babe." I kiss his cheek.

Clint goes "Awww, ain't they cute," only to get another slap on the head from Natasha. "Damn you, Nat!"

"Language!"
