CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT
"What do you mean he's coming for us?" I ask, fear and confusion rising in my heart as I help Lorna from the floor of her cell. "We haven't heard a peep from him or his Brotherhood in almost four months."
"That is because he has been planning," she gulps, trying to breathe properly despite her anxiety. "Planning and scheming. He has Ultron working for him, but Ultron has corrupted his mind with thoughts of a world made pure of homosapiens. They both want one thing-"
"A world without humans," I mumble, my thoughts going to every comic, every movie, every show I've ever watched with Erik Lensherr in it. People always died. "My God." I turn to Lorna, placing my hands on her shoulders and looking her directly in the eyes. "Lorna, you have to tell me what they're planning. Do you know?"
"We are too late," she cries, a crazy laugh slipping out. "He has you exactly where he wants you. With you and Tony fighting, he is free to slip in between the cracks and destroy everything. Glory, he is coming for you all, and he will not stop until the Avengers are dead. Then he will go for the X-Men, then America, then the world. Nothing will satisfy him. Nothing."
"Nothing short of the planet." I look up, looking around at the chaos as the others on my team blast people from their cells. "Okay, Lorna, listen to me. I need your help to get out."
"What are you planning?" she asks, walking beside me with a small limp. "I cannot help you. Tony made me powerless." She holds up her hands, and around her wrists are metal cuffs. "I cannot use my powers."
"I have a friend who can help with that," I reply, smiling at her. "Kamala!"
Ms. Marvel rounds the corner, pulling a door off its hinges with her "Embiggen"-ed hands. "Yeah, Glorious?"
"Come here! I need your help!"
The young Inhuman rushes over to Lorna and I, asking, "What's up?"
"Can you break her cuffs?" Lorna shows Ms. Marvel her cuffs.
Kamala laughs, taking the cuffs in her hands. "Watch this." She Embiggens her hands once more, tearing the cuffs in half with her super strength. "There. Good as new."
Lorna rubs her wrists, then flexes them, her powers coming back to life. She smiles as the door to her cell lifts off the floor. "Thank you, Ms. Marvel."
Kamala grins like a happy teen. "No problem! Come, help us get some of these doors off."
Lorna smiles even bigger, raising her arms towards the doors to the unopened cells. She then makes fists of them, pulling them back behind her sides. The doors creak and pull off the walls. She then takes them and shoves them out into the large room where we came from.
"Nice one, Polaris," I say in awe, placing a hand on her shoulder. "Help us get these people out and to safety, then I'll have the entire team listen to what you have to say. Deal?"
She nods, giving me a true smile. "You are one hell of a woman, Gloria. My brother is lucky to have found you."
Who wouldn't grin like an idiot at that?
"Glory!" I hear Pietro's voice on the other line of my com.
I tap my earpiece and listen in. "Yes, Pietro? Have you found him?"
"Not yet," he replies, sadness in his voice. "I have found the core, though. It is on the other side of the prison, not in the middle like we assumed. It is surrounded by guards now, since our entrance. I don't see how we're going to get Overheat in here to blow it."
"We'll work our way over there," I reply, helping Lorna tear off more doors as the rest of the team helps the prisoners out of their containment, whatever that might mean for them. "Find Steve. The whole thing is off if we can't find him. I'm not blowing him up."
"Agreed. Be safe, my love."
"You, too, Mr. Northern."
"Glory, I am fairly certain that is not how it works in either of our countries."
I chuckle, rolling my eyes. "Glory out."

Forty minutes and five-hundred something prisoners later, both sides of the team meet back up, Bucky's side and mine. Over five-hundred people and not one of them is Steve Rogers. The fact that we haven't found him is starting to make the entire team nervous, especially Bucky, Natasha, Sam, and I. We knew him best. He meant the most to us.
With that fact in mind, Bucky gives us more orders. "We need to start funneling these people out of here."
The inner circle of Avengers - Nat, Sam, Wanda, Pietro, Clint, Vision, Stephen, and I - nod in agreement with him. "The guards will be coming to soon," Nat says, looking over the group of five-hundred behind us. "They aren't going to stay calm forever."
"We should make for the portal," Clint says. "While it's still open. We all know Tony's gonna show up any second. Anything we have from now until then is a luxury."
Bucky nods, turning to Stephen and Wanda. "Use your magic to keep everyone calm and collected when you head for the portal. Don't stop for anything besides Steve. Once you have everyone on the other side, find Amy Grey, Katie Mateese, and Riley McCoy. They know the plan to get everyone out. Go." Wanda and Stephen nod, walking off to the crowd to start moving everyone in the direction of the portal.
Bucky turns to the rest of us. "We have to find Steve."
"Are we even sure he's here, man?" Sam asks. "I mean, where did we hear it?"
"We didn't," Bucky admits. "We just assumed-"
"-So he could not be here? Awww, man," Clint says, closing his eyes in exasperation.
"We keep looking," I say. "We keep looking until the last possible second. If need be, Pietro can run Clarke to the core to overheat it right as Tony gets here. We don't need much time, but Steve..." I cringe at the thought of leaving him here when that happens. "I won't leave him to burn when he saved me from the fire."
"Makes three of us," Nat replies, looking up at Bucky. "We'll look, but this place can't be left standing. Steve wouldn't want-"
"-I know."
"Go," Bucky says. "Search any way you can. Glory, take Overheat with you in case Tony shows up." Bucky pulls the shield from his back and attaches it to his forearm, readying for a fight.
I can't help the proud smile that crosses my face. "Looks good on you, Bucky-Cap."
Bucky rolls his eyes, turning to the tunnels to search for his childhood best friend, Natasha and Clint following him. "That nickname better not stick, I tell you."
I chuckle, turning to Sam, Vision, and Pietro. "Alright, boys. Let's go look for Steve. Pietro, run ahead. Search any rooms that look like someone might be in them. Vision, phase through the walls. Look in every room, cell or not. Sam, you're our eye in the sky." I turn to the crowd of supers behind us, looking for Clarke. "Overheat! Logan!"
A head full of dirty blond hair pops up, walking towards me. "Here!" he answers, like being called for class. Logan follows him.
"What is it?"
"I have jobs for the both of you." I turn to Logan first. "Logan, get the team ready to head out after all the prisoners are through. Have Katie Mateese, Riley McCoy, and Amy Grey go through the portal first. They will create a landing cite for everyone to get on. Their powers with water are why we brought them along." He nods, scurrying off towards the team, giving orders with his bellowing voice.
"What about me?" Clarke asks.
"You are coming with me."
"Look, I'm flattered, but you're not really my type-"
"-We're going to look for Steve," I chuckle. "And then you're gonna blow up Prison 42. Sound good?"
Overheat, true to his name, smirks and holds up a ball of white fire. "So good."
With a curt nod, Clarke and I begin our search, looking al throughout Prison 42 for our leader. We check every room, look in every cell, search every place that he could possibly be, all to come up empty handed.
"Where is he?" I scream, exasperated. "He has to be here somewhere!"
"We might have to start thinking that he's not here at all," Clarke says, softly, putting his hand on my shoulder. "Tony might've wanted to keep him closer to home because he's so valuable."
I nod, knowing he's probably right. "I just... I can't even begin to think of leaving him here. I wish there was a way I could know for sure that he won't be here when you burn the place down."
"Can your powers help? Don't you have some sort of cosmic doohickey that can give us a boost?"
I can't help but chuckle at his choice of words. "It doesn't work like that, I'm afraid. I can't just go searching for it. It comes to me on its own terms, sadly. It's like I have my own benevolent Pheonix Force."
"Pheonix who?"
"Nevermind. Long story. We should get you to the reactor to wait for the word from Bucky."
Clarke nods, and just as we begin to walk towards the core of Prison 42, our coms start beeping. "Bucky?" I ask, pressing the recieve button on the earpiece.
"We're giving you the go ahead now," he says, and I can hear explosions in the background.
The ground beneath Clarke and my feet starts to tremble, both of us looking at each other with nervous expressions. "What's going on, Buck?"
"Tony's here, and he's brought some sort of new suit! We can't take it down. He's shut the portal! Stephen and Wanda are trying to create a second way out, but they're not doin' so hot. Spider-Woman is hit, and we can't find half the team. The other half is on the other side of the portal without their get away. We need back up!"
"Hold on," I shout. "I'm sending Sam and Vision your way right now. I'm on my way, t-"
"-No! Get Clarke to the core. Finish the mission, Glory. Finish the mission!"
There's a bunch of static, lots of gunfire and screams, then nothing. "Bucky? Bucky! Nat? Logan? Clint? Anyone!"
I'm helpless again. I can do nothing but watch again.
"What the hell was that?" Clarke says, white flames sparking out of his hands.
"I don't know," I reply. "But we have to get you to the core. Now."
"But what about Bucky! We can't just leave-"
"In war, you follow orders!" I shout, my eyes flashing gold for a split second. "Even if you don't agree with them."
Clarke smirks angrily, trying to hide his rage. "Is that what Steve taught you? Or did he do what was right, no matter the orders?"
I don't respond, just turn around pressing another frenquency on my ear piece. "Sam, Vision, you hear me? Frigga, please, pick up."
"Loud and clear, Glory."
"Head towards the portal. Tony's here and Bucky can't take him alone."
"What about Steve?"
"Steve's not here. We can't waste any more time. We have the go for Overheat."
"Aye, aye, Glorious. We're on our way."
I press the silencer on my com and start hurrying towards the core. "Come on, Clarke. We gotta prison to fry."
Clarke nods, following even though his own conscience is telling him otherwise.
It doesn't take us long to get to the core, since the majority of the people in Prison 42 are either fighting Tony or helping him. The farthest room from the portal, it's the perfect place to keep the energy source of the prison safe.
"Whoa," Clarke mumbles, his mouth dropping open.
"You can say that again," I reply, just as awestruck.
The core looks like the Warp Core of the Enterprise. It's tall and around twenty feet around. It doesn't glow blue, though. This power structure is glowing a hellish red. The room is lined with generators that keep the power output even and steady.
"Intruders!" a guard shouts from behind the core, picking up his gun and firing at Clarke and I.
I dodge the bullets, running towards the guard, slamming my fist into his face with brute force. He falls to the ground, no longer the issue at hand.
The new issue is the debris falling over our heads as the walls and ceiling shake, Iron-Man causing chaos around the prison. "Glory!" Clarke shouts, andI turn to see his face full of terror. "Duck!" Confusion crosses my face, and I turn just in time to see a pile of debris falling onto me.
And the next thing I see is the darkess sweeping me up into its arms again, sounds and sights fading away with the screaming voice of Clarke Yamzon.

Such a strange place to be in my dreams, standing in front of a casket while watching Steve and Tony look towards the sky together. Not fighting, not even realizing the company they hold. Fire and explosions cross the light in their eyes, a shadow crossing their faces.
"It wasn't worth it," Tony whispers, glancing to Steve.
"Damn right," Steve mumbles back, his eys glued to the sky still.
I turn to look at what they stare, shock, terror, and confusion crossing my mind at the thing I see.
A large, metalic object floats over our heads, a giant "M" on the bottom. A floating city, an asteroid of sorts, and on its edge are the Brotherhood with their leader, Magneto. Along the bottom are a series of jets to keep it airborne. And leading it into the city, guiding it like a horse and carriage, are Ultron's robots, except this time, they are bigger and more equipped to deal with every single Avenger that stands beside me.
As I look closer, I see that they aren't Ultron robots. They're Iron-Man suits.
My hand covers my mouth. "Oh my gods."
And then my vision stops like a movie. I hear the voices of Clarke Yamzon once more, pulling me from my premonition before I can digest what I've just seen.
· ~ · ~ · ~ · ~ ·
My eyes open and I sit up with a jerk, instantly regretting it. "Son of Odin," I mumble, hokding my head in my hands. "My head!"
"I told you to duck!" Clarke leands over me, trying to help me up. "God, I was worried you..."
I shake my head, memories of what's to come flooding my brain. "The future..."
"What?"
"I saw the future... again. Oh gods. Oh gods, I have to get Bucky! This is going to get so bad!" The pain of whats to come crashes down onto me, my shoulders feeling like they weigh a million tons.
"What did you see?" Clarke asks, hand on my shoulder.
"Lorna was right. Magneto is coming for us, but not just us. He's coming for the world, and he has exactly what he needs to do it!"
"Glory, you're not making any sense."
"Asteroid M!" I shout, recalling the horror that Magneto did with that place in the comics. "Imagine Genosha, but ten times worse!"
Clarke's face drains of all color. "Get to Bucky. I got this."
I shake my head. "I can't leave you. This is the mission!"
"If you don't go now, the world will be our next mission!" Clarke nods to me, reassuring me. "Go. I got this. I'll wait for a signal, but if thing's get too bad, I'll overheat and then join you at the make shift portal, alright?"
Hesitantly, I nod, placing my hand on his shoulder. "You were right, about doing what's right, you know."
He smiles, then pushes me towards the door. "I'll meet you soon!"
With one, last nod, I jump from the ground, taking flight over the prison corridors.
We thought it was bad now, and as the saying goes, it's going to get worse before it gets better. We have no idea how bad it's going to get.
