Chapter Three

{Pietro's Point of View}

Over the past year, I have come to love mornings almost more than Glory does. With her pregnancy, she sleeps enough for three people, but that does not stop me from waking up and doing something nice for my fiancee.

I wake to Glory curled up to my side. Ever since she told me we are having twins, she has been extra careful when she sleeps, always on her side and never on her back. She says it helps them sleep, the babies. I take her word for it; she is a mother now, after all.

"Glory," I mumble, trying to pull my arm out from under her red curls. They can be both endearing and hilarious in the morning, everywhere and untamed. "Can I have my arm back?"

She groans and pulls me closer to her. "No."

A small chuckle escapes my lips as I place a kiss to her forehead. "Baby, I have Avengers work today."

"You have Avengers work every day," she grumbles in her sleepy haze. "Can't you take a day off?"

I sigh. "Sadly, no. I wish I could."

She turns to face me as I pull my arm from her her, sitting up. "I feel like I never see you anymore. You're always in Sokovia, or helping in New York, or with Steve with the Next Generation Mutants."

"It has been hectic lately, I know." I pull her up into my arms and cradle her to my bare chest. "It will settle down soon. I promise."

She nods into my neck and turns my chin down to kiss me. "Will you be home tonight?"

I nod. "And we are going to call your mother, da?"

She groans and rubs her eyes. "Ugh. My mother." Another kiss is given that I gladly return. "Okay, silly boy. Be safe. Tell Steve, Vlad, and the others I miss them." Ever since the Second Black Plague, Glory has been on suspended Avengers status. She is taking the year off to take care of herself, our unborn children, and a few months after they are born.

I peck her cheek and hop out of bed. "I will. Get back to sleep. It is only six. You need not get up this early."

By the time I turn to her, she has already snuggled back down into the duvet and fallen fast asleep.

Running has always clearned my head, even before I could go five times the speed of sound. The adrenaline, the rush, the focus of every part ofbyour body to push you to the limit. There is nothing on earth like it.

It does not take me long to go anywhere anymore. I used to enjoy that, the time spent running away. Now, as I run to the New Avengers facility outside New York City, I see Wanda land in my path, arms crossed. She can be such a bossy little sister. "Good morning, Pietro," she says, her accent heavy. "Late again, I see?"

"Shut up. I was making breakfast for Glory for when she gets up from her hibernation," I reply, skidding to a stop a foot away. I peck her cheek, a greeting, and walk with her towards the training room. "What is the agenda today, sister?"

"Stark is making his television appearence this afternoon," she says, making doe eyes at Vision from across the room as we enter. "So, thankfully, he will not be with us. We are having a visitor to help with the Next Generation Mutants issue, what to do with them. Vladamir, Katie, Roran, Cole, and Morgana, they do not wish to be Avengers, not after what they witnessed at the Second Black Plague."

"Who is the visitor?"

"A mutant leader by the name of Professor Charles Xavier of the X-Men. They are stationed here in New York." Vision winks at Wanda from across the room, earning a giggle from Wanda. They must be communicating through their minds... again.

I look quickly back and forth between her and the android, sighing. "Could you not try to make out in each other's minds, please? I am standing... right here."

Wanda blushes and turns to me. "Like you and Glory are any better, you old sap. Being a fiance and now father has made you soft."

I shrug, smirking. "I do not see the problem. You are going to be babysitting the twins a lot."

She raises an eyebrow at me as Steve Rogers, Natasha Romanoff, Sam Wilson, James Rhodes, Bucky Barnes, Carol Danvers, and our newest recruit to the New Avengers, Scott Lang aka Ant-Man. "Oh, really? So you can have Glory all to yourself, da?"

I grin and ruffle up her hair playfully. "Da!"

Steve comes over to the small group and smiles at us all. "Good morning, Avengers. Charles Xavier said he is just a few minutes out, so I think we should head to the conference room."

Both us Maximoffs nod in agreement and follow the Patriot warrior to the other side of the New Avengers complex. The room is large, like Stark's conference room, with a long table and dozens of chairs. We have had S.H.I.E.L.D. in this room, congressmen and women, police, even the vice-president. Now we will have our own kind here.

Just as soon as we are seated, the door opens and one of our staff escorts three people inside. Wanda leans over and whispers to me their names and who they are. To the bald man in the wheelchair, she says, "That is Professor Charles Xavier. He is the leader of the X-Men, and one of the first mutants. He has been teaching their kind for as long as he can remember."

She turns my attention to the dark skinned woman with snow white hair, like me. "That is Ororo Munroe, also known as Storm. She is going to succeed Xavier as the leader of the X-Men and she will teach at their school."

To the last man, the larger one with crazy hair and a cigar in his mouth, she whispers, "That is Logan, but in the Amry he went by and is still called Wolverine. He doesn't age, has an Ademantium skeleton, and has razor claws that come out. He is more of a part time X-Man. He is old friends with Xavier."

Charles Xavier smiles kindly at us all, and says, "Hello, Avengers. Thank you for having us."

Steve stands and shakes his hand, returning the smile. "Thank you for coming." He turns to Ororo Munroe and shakes her hand as well, "Ma'am," but when he outstretches his hand to Logan, Logan simply crosses his arms and raises a brow.

Wanda chuckles, I assume reading his thoughts. Logan turns to her and groans. "Great. Another mind reader. Something funny, bub?"

She smirks. "I am glad to know your head is in the right place, James."

"What did you call me?"

"Logan," Charles chastises him. "Focus on why we are here." Logan and Ororo take seats at the table and Xavier rolls up to the empty space set for him. "I was so glad to hear your call. Anything I can do to help these new mutants, it will be done."

"Our five should be here any moment," Nat says, tapping her pen on the wooden surface of the table. "I told them eight o'clock sharp, but..."

"They are children," Charles chuckles. "They will get here when they get here. Shall we discuss the others?"

"What you mean the other two thousand?" Rhodey asks.

"Precisely. The government will not let me take the ones who want to be taught under my wing." Charles sighs.

"There's no reasoning with the government, Charles" Logan says, puffing his cigar. "It's times like these pp I get Erik."

"Erik?" I ask.

"No one important, kid."

I get up from my chair and run to him, snatching the damn cigar from his mouth and throwing it across the front lawn, and back in my chair before he can take another breath. "Do not call me kid."

Logan growls, but Ororo places a gentle hand on his shoulder. "Logan, no."

"Yeah," I say, teasing. "Logan, no."

"Pietro," Wanda says, giving me THE look.

I sigh. "Da, da, I know."

I turn back to Xavier as he speaks. "You have good relations with the army, James Rhodes. Have you tried talking to them about this issue?"

He shakes his head. "Should they really be taught how to become stronger? Some of them are very dangerous."

"Yes, I've heard if Mr. Killbane. My apologies to the loss of Ms. Penrose-Spencer," he says. "But they do need to learn. Some are dangerous, yes, but out there alone and confused and frightened, they are more dangerous. Especially with the circumstances around their transformation. I have a friend in the government, Hank McCoy, but he has yet to return my calls."

Steve turns to Carol and Rhodey. "Could you two try to make some sense of this?"

Carol nods, while Rhodey is hesitant. "We will, won't we James?"

The doors open and in come the five mutants from the Second Black Plague. They must have been goofing off, for they are in their Stark made uniforms. They had even made names for themselves. Morgana Summers, controller of solar energy, is calling herself Hell Child. Roran White, having the ability to control any material to make new objects, is called Whitesmith. Cole Roman has the abiliy to read, write, or think things ino existence, and his code name is Inkheart. Vladamir Penrose-Spencer, with batlike wings and dark cloud emissions, is called Vampire. Katie Mateese can control water in any of its three forms, and she prefers the name Oasis in training.

They are all laughing when they enter, and I realize that I am no longer the child in this group of strangely talented people. Wanda and I are no longer considered the newbies. Vlad takes one look at the room, his smile disappearing, and he whispers, "Oh shit."

"You're late," Carol says in a stern voice.

They settle down immediately and stand in line. "We're sorry, Steve, everyone. We got distracted by... nevermind," Katie says, lowering her head. "It was stupid."

Xavier smiles at them. "Don't be sorry. Come, join us now. We were just discussing you five." He turns to Vlad and says sotly, "I am sorry for your loss, Vladamir."

Vlad looks to him out of the corner of his eye as he takes a seat. "I don't think we've met."

"My name is Charles Xavier. This is Oror Munroe, and this is Logan. We've come to ask you if you would like to join the X-Men."

The next half an hour is Charles explaining who he is, who they are, what the school is for, and what the X-Men can offer them. He also gives them other options. It is hard to read the five Next Gen. Mutsnts. Reading people has never been my strong suit. I have Wanda for that, but after the talking, Vlad seems very standoff-ish. His face is grim and his jaw tightens. The others, however, look excited to say the least. Morgana, being the cousin of Scott Summers, and Roran, being the distant relative of Professor Xavier, jump on board, saying they want to start immediately. Cole says he would prefer tostay with his family, but he would like to join hr classes to learn. Katie says she will give it a try, and if it suits her, she will stay.

"Wonderful," Xavier says, a huge smile on his face. "If you go with Ororo, she will take you to the X-Jet and get you signed up. You can call your families, if you like." After Morgana, Cole, Roran, and Katie leave with Ororo, Xavier turns to Vlad, who still looks unconvinced. "But you, you do not seem convinced. What is troubling you?"

"You read minds," he says, almost spitefully. "You tell me."

"I don't use my powers on others without their consent."

"I just lost my wife," he sighs. "I don't want anymore of this mutant, superhero bullshit. I was transformed against my will, I was imprisoned illegally, and I lost one of the two most important women in my life."

"You don't have to come, bub," Logan says. "The school isn't for everyone."

"Like you, Wolverine?" Vision says. "I read your files."

"Nosey," Logan mumbles.

"You don't stay in one place for more than a couple months. You have lost many people close to you. You stay away from Japan because of Mar-"

"-Don't go there," Logan growls, bringing the Wolverine out.

"There is something else we must discuss," Charles says, turning to Steve with a grim look. "There is an old friend of mine that has returned to New York. For what, I don't know, but you need to be aware of him."

"Who?" I ask, leaning forward.

"Erik Lensherr. Otherwise known as Magneto."
