19| Ghosts of the Past

***

After my call with Dick telling us to come to Chicago I realized that this situation was far from being over. Apparently the man who sent the family after us was named Adamson, however he didn't seem to be the man orchestrating all of these attempts at capturing Rachel.

We mostly drove in silence, and I wondered if any of the other slept at all last night. I know I certainly didn't and it was beginning to show as Kory volunteered to be the one to drive. "I have questions. So many questions."

I turned around to face Gar who was looking at me with eager eyes, already having my suspicions about what he was going to ask. It wasn't surprising that the idea of superheroes excited Garfield, not when he was powers himself. He probably had dream of becoming a superhero himself, what other reason would he agree to go n this dangerous mission with a group of strangers. "I might answer some of them."

"Then I have to pick them wisely." Gar muttered under his breath deep in thought. "Okay! How about how you and Dick are friends when he's Robin and you're a Siren. Aren't you supposed to be enemies?"

I turned the question over in my head wondering exactly how I should answer it. There was too much history there to try to explain, and most I didn't want to talk about it at all. What would I give such personal details of my life to a boy I would never see again after we solved Rachel's problem? "Well I knew Dick before I became a Siren. I would hardly call us friends though."

"Then what would you call yourselves?" Rachel questioned a knowing smile on her lips. Causing Kory who had been quiet until now to chuckle softly to herself.

"Acquaintances."

"No. You're totally friends. I mean how can you two even be in the same room after you and the Sirens were members of the Injustice League?" Gar continued and I was surprised about just how much he knew. My time with the Injustice League was brief and I would hardly have considered myself a member.

"I would hardly call myself a member of the Injustice League. Joining them was a mistake, they are all misogynistic assholes who could care less about its female members." I replied almost bitterly, remember Lex Luther with a mad taste in my mouth. "And we're adult we can put aside our differences."

Kory chuckled again and this time faced me looking abused. "You and Dick sure know how to keep your secrets."

"People are boring unless they have secrets."

"This is awesome." Gar commented as we stood at the entrance of one of Bruce's dafe houses. Of course no one else knew this but me, yet Gar still seemed excited possibly already guessing that this building belonged to Batman. He waived enthusiastically up at the camera until the doors to an elevator opened. Stepping inside I felt Gar's excited energy coming off of him in waves, and he was the first one out of the elevator when the door's opened.

"Who are your friends?" A young boy who looked only slightly older than Gar and Rachel questioned as he looked between us in mild curiosity.

"Not important." Dick stated firmly clearly in a horrible mood. Whoever this boy was Dick was not pleased that he was here at all, though there was another emotion in his eyes that was more difficult to place than simple annoyance.

Kory crossed her arms over her chest as she inspected our new friend. "Who's he?"

"Not important."

"Aww he's kind of cute." I commented as I looked at the boy, who suddenly smirked and a look of arrogance came over him.

"Right back at ya." He replied with a wink as he stood marching himself towards me with all the confidence in the world. "I know I might seem young but..."

I looked at him with what must have been the disgust I felt before moving away from him. "I take it back."

The boy shrugged before he lifted the beer he was holding in his hand. "Anybody want a brew?"

"Yeah, I do." Gar replied excitedly and was about to tack a step towards the boy before Dick placed a hand on his shoulder keeping him in place.

"No, he doesn't." Dick stated as he looked at Gar and the back at the boy with a stern look. "No one wants a brew."

"That can't be Adamson." Kory stated as she continued to study the new boy.

"He's not Adamson." Dick replied as he jerked his head down the hall. "Adamson's in the bathroom. Unconscious."

"I'm going to go check on him." She replied clearly not wanting to be a part of this mess that seemed to be brewing, and I couldn't blame her. Dick looked like a ticking time bomb, Gar was practically bouncing off the walls, and this new kid was radiating arrogance. The only one who seemed normal was Rachel, Kory and I. As she left in the direction of the bathroom I almost wanted to follow her, but my curiosity won over wanting to know who this mysterious boy was.

"Hi, I'm Rachel." She greeted, clearly curious about the boy.

"Jason."

Dick sighed, clearly frustrated though none of the kids seemed to notice. "Okay, who we all are doesn't matter right now. Can we just chill out, relax, sit on the couch and watch TV or something?"

"Yo, when did you get another one?" Garfield suddenly exclaimed from the corner of the room as he looked down at the two identical cases the held Dick's Robin suit.

"That one's mine." Jason replied dismissively, though I felt shock run through me. My first instinct was that he was lying, but by Dick's look that clearly wasn't the case. In my mind I couldn't imagine anyone else as Robin.

"Yours?" Gar muttered in disbelief. "Wait, you're Robin, too?"

"I thought you were Robin." Rachel questioned accusingly.

"I am." Dick stated firmly.

"He was." Jason quickly corrected and I suddenly began to lose track of who was speaking as everyone began speaking at the same time.

"Okay, how many Robins are there?" I heard what must have been Gar ask eagerly. "Are there a lot? Cause I would love to..."

"All of you quiet." I practically yelled as I looked around the room, the beginnings of a headache coming in. Surprisingly everyone did as Rachel and Gar looked at me with wide eyes like they were children who were being yelled at by a parent. "Now all of you sit down or I will tie you down."

"I'll do anything you say." Jason said as he laid back agains the couch looking up at me suggestively. "I have to say I like the second option better though."

I sighed as I turned towards Dick who still seemed like the wrong word would cause him to self destruct. "Can we talk somewhere private."

Dick nodded as he led my down a hallway and opened the door to one of the bedrooms. At the sight of the large bed I felt a ridiculous sense of happiness as I collapsed on top of it.

"Now this is a bed."I said with a sigh, feeling a small urge to simply stay here and sleep.Sitting up slightly I leaned back against my elbows at Dick who was staring at the other side of the wall, his hands at his side in fist. "Now why don't you tell me what wrong?" He continued to look at the wall, and I simply sighed before I fell back on the bed.

"He's my replacement." He stated as he placed his hands on his hips. I knew that look, he was jealous. A jealousy that I understood nobody likes the idea of being replaceable, especially when it come from the man who was practically your father.

"You gave up being Robin." I reminded him, and he nodded attempting to remind himself of the same. I stood up now sensing the serious direction that this conversation was taking. "This is a good thing then. Right?"

"Right."

"Unless you're jealous?" I continued attempting to lighten the mood. Seeing this extremely brooding side of Dick was unnerving, something that was unfamiliar territory for me. "I mean you should be this new robin is younger, and healthier and smarter...better looking."

He looked up to meet my eyes, his lips twitched with a small ghost of a smile. "Better looking?"

"Don't worry you're still my Robin." I teased before I looked down at his hand. Initially I wanted to ask about the file in his hands. Reaching out I took the file from his hands but gestured down that the badges that had fresh blood seeping through them. "What happened?"

"Nothing." He said as he pulled his sleeve back down to his wrist, and then sighed clearly having something he wanted to get off his chest. "It was a tracker. I didn't know Bruce placed a tracker in me."

"So you cut it out? A bit dramatic don't you think?"

A dark look came over his features again, a clear resentment in his eyes. "I'm not an animal in Bruce's zoo."

"I don't think you understand Bruce." I argued, knowing that Bruce did what he did to keep Dick safe. Even now that Dick had left him, I just wondered why Dick didn't seem to realize this. Or maybe I hadn't realized how deep his resentment against Bruce was.

"Since when do you defend Bruce?"

"You're right who would have thought that I would ever be on Bat's side. But this really isn't an argument that I want to have." I stated as I opened the file looking down at the photographs inside. My first instinct should have been the horror of looking at all these people who's skin had been practically melted off of their bones, but the fact was that these photographs were something that I had already seen.

"What is it?" Dick questioned having had noticed the surprise on my face. "What are you thinking?"

I looked up at him and smiled. "I was thinking about dying my hair."

"What?"

"I mean Gar's hair is green, Rachel's is purple and Kory's is pink. I'm starting to feel left out." I replied wanting to avoid telling him my suspicion. Knowing that Zucco was behind this, that he was the son of the man that killed Dick's parents. Somethings were best left in the past. "Maybe I'll do blue and you can do red?"

"Chey this is serious. If you know something..." He trailed off and I began to realize that this was personal. That's why Bruce sent little Robin on training wheels after Dick. Though Dick's involvement in these murder's didn't make sense, from what I knew these people were connected to the murder of Tony Zucco. It seemed that I was wrong.

"Who are they to you Dick?"

His eyes were mostly guarded until now, and as he finally let his guard down I could see the sorrow in his eyes. Like he was mourning someone. "They're people I knew from my time at Haly's Circus."

I felt my fingers twitch at my sides with the earning to touch him. Hating seeing him this way instead of the confident Dick who always came up with a witty remark to most situations. But I pushed all those thoughts away and gave him what I could. Information.

"He calls himself something stupid like... The Melting Man. Uses the same hydrofluoric acid that the Maroni's do, word on the street is that it's because the Maroni's killed his father." I told him remembering the little I did from my last days in Gotham. Every time a new rogue appeared the already existing rogues needed to learn about the new guy who was threatening their reign as the more dangerous if Batman's enemies. Though no on was every really able to top the antics of The Joker. "I remember Harvey wasn't too pleased."

"Harvey?" Dick questioned a dark look appearing in his eyes. "You talk about Two-Face like you were friends."

I smiled enjoying the fact that I was still able to get this sort of reaction from him. "Don't tell me you're jealous Boy Wonder. Don't worry he's not really my type. Well...one side of him at least."

"Who is he?" Dick questioned deciding it was best to change the subject.

I pressed my lips together, feeling an odd sense of uncertainty. If this wasn't personal before it certainly was now. "Nick Zucco."

All the color seemed to drain from Dick's face at the news. At first I thought it was because the name Zucco brought memories of his parent's but his reaction seemed to run much deeper than then. What I saw in his eyes wasn't sadness for his parents, it was guilt. I felt a sinking feeling in my stomach as a thought that seemed impossible came to me.

"Nick Zucco claimed that the murders where to punish the man that killed his father and family." I began to say with hesitation not sure that I wanted the answer to the question I was about to ask. Buy thought better against it. "I don't understand what Haly's Circus has to do with it. With you. It was Maroni's men that killed Tony Zucco."

"The Maroni's didn't kill Tony Zucco. I did."

Dick didn't meet my eyes as he looked down at his feet clearly ashamed and maybe afraid of what my reaction would be. I didn't know what he expected my reaction to be, not that I had much of a right to me judgmental I had a list of sins that was far too long. So instead I walked over to him getting a firm hold of his chin and forcing him to meet my eyes. "Explain."

And he did. He told me everything from him discovering that Tony Zucco was going to be released on bail and his decision to kill him one night. Only that he decided against it and gave up Zucco to the Maroni's who killed him. Hearing this made me feel a sense of relief, that Dick wasn't tainted and that he didn't have blood on his hands. Knowing that he didn't break Bruce's one rule.

No killing.

Even I couldn't prevent the sigh of relief that escaped my lips as I moved away from him. Not wanting him to see how relieved I really felt. "You didn't kill Zucco Dick."

"I let him get killed." He argued as he ran his hands through his hair in frustration, a gesture that I had not seen him do in a long time. "It's the same thing."

"It's not."

All the hatred and resentment in Dick's eyes became regret and guilt. I knew this had something to do with Bruce, I just couldn't understand why. "Cheyenne you don't understand. I have this darkness inside of me, sometimes I just lose control. And it's all because of Bruce, he made me believe that I had the liberty or the right to hurt people."

"No, I believe Bruce made you a better man. Who knows who you would have become on your own without a way to channel your anger against your parent's deaths. You could have become just like Nick Zucco." I stated firmly, knowing that my words were the truth. Ignoring by better instincts against it, I took his hand in mine. "Tony Zucco's blood is not on your hands. The question is what are you going to do now?"
