The Night
The sweater I wore was hideous the awful shade of green. It was somewhat the shade that resembled the shade of green from grass stains. If you smelled the knitted piece of trash it was caked in smoke and alcohol but my mother dearie. Katrina insisted I wear the sweater for the feast that waited downstairs and already spread out on the hickory wood table. My father on the other hand Fredrick old and no smarter than his own 7 year old daughter I Lanie Grace Andrews was smoking in the freezing cold. In my opinion the old man had gone insane but you know adults not taking the words from children. My father stood 6'0 and my mother 5'9 but I compared to them I was measly and short though it's common in the family blood lines. Finally I had my closest friend with me. A mid thigh high black Labrador who I swore had dimples pranced into my aqua blue room and laid his head on my jean covered lap. Rex was more than just a dog he was like my brother to be. I tell him everything and he understands what I say each dreadful day after school. I petted his silky fur showing my pearly whites as I did and my eyes beamed with joy. Then the word " GRACIE." Ran into my room causing me to roll my blue eyes as the last syllable was heard. Oh how I hated my middle name. It didn't fit my personality at all or my looks at all either. I walked down the red carpet covered stairs carefully as the mammal followed close behind. I walked into the kitchen causing my nostrils to be hit with the sweet aroma of honey cooked ham with mashed potatoes with butter. My small stomach growled and I wrapped a arm around it sighing. Christmas the only day we were really guranted a hot meal on the table. I took a seat waiting on my supposedly father to come in. The door opened and he walked in his broad shoulders moved when he walked his black work boots tracking mud into the kitchen. Katrina was greatly disappointed rembering the day she was on her hands and knees scrubbing the floor hard to keep it clean enough to eat off. Anyways the bald man came in and took a seat next to me and my mother sat on the other side of me. I was the only daughter in the house and it was to stay like that. My mother started to cut the pink meat and the sweet juices seeped through causing me to lick my winter dried lips and put a smile on my face. Rex the cute pre teen dog sat under the table huddled up and sitting down waiting for some precious scraps to be dropped on the floor. If anything were to drop it would be the smokies. They're always the most difficult to get off a plate. I myself though just fed Rex whatever was left on my plate because he looked to be skinnier than me. I put my plate in the sink and left to go back upstairs to do the thing people call homework but I call it torture. I hated school but I knew if I wanted to get out of this pit I would have to put in all I got. I didn't care much for all the other typical careers people but I wanted to be a lawyer. Yeah a girl like me as a lawyer it was rare but genuine since there's barely any female lawyers there Kate McLee but other than that there is no other known female lawyer. Anyways I made it back to my room and pulled up to my bed and light pink 3 year old book bag and picked up the heavy thing and unzipped the almost broke zipper and pulled out my binder and started my homework. My eyelids grew heavy and I sat there still doing my homework and I had finally allowed my exhausted body to fall into a deep and peaceful sleep. Rex being as stubborn as he is climbed into with and I cuddled into his silk black fur as I slept. I knew Rex was happy despite the fact he was tired. He too eventually fell asleep with me under the checker print blanket .
