War's POV
Thankfully the following morning I was feeling much better. I even ate every crunchy bit of the crispy bacon strips and the thick large pancake drizzled with maple syrup that Sea had prepared for me. And I drank the tall glass of milk up to the last drop.
Yin did not greet me when I entered the car and I didn't greet him either.
He drove me to my university in complete silence.
The only time he spoke to me was when we reached the entrance to my building.
"Do you need to be picked up at five o'clock?" he asked without looking at me.
"If nothing new comes up, yes," I replied. "Otherwise I will call my father if I will be delayed in going home."
Yin nodded as indication that he understood and then he drove away.
I watched the car as he drove towards the university exit gate.
I jumped when I felt someone tap me heavily on my shoulder from behind.
"Wish! How did you get here? How did you pass through the university security guard?" I got so shocked that I dropped a folder that I was holding outside of my backpack.
Wish and I stooped to pick it up at the same time. His hand landed on mine. I tried to pull my hand away but he held on to it.
"Wish, please let go of my hand," I said as patiently as I could. "I have a class to catch. I don't wanna be late."
"Sorry," Wish said, letting go of my hand. "Can we hang out after your last class?"
"No can do," I replied. "I will be busy trying to catch up on my missed lessons. Speaking of which you mentioned to me that you were going to bring other pages from the school material that you had forgotten to bring me."
"Oh, about that... I checked my backpack again and it turns out that I had given you everything," he said.
"So what are you doing here?" I asked. "Aren't you supposed to be in your own school?"
"Today my classes don't start until nine thirty." he informed me.
I glanced at my watch.
"If you will be taking a bus to your school from here, you might want to start going," I said. "You don't wanna be late for school."
"Okay," he said. "but since we can't hang out today, how about tomorrow?"
I wanted to say 'not tomorrow either, and not ever' but I didn't want to sound unfriendly. After all he was Carole's younger brother.
"I'll call you tomorrow afternoon," I promised, feeling guilty because I had no intention of keeping that promise.
"Cool," he said, unexpectedly giving me a tight hug before running away towards the university exit gate.
I saw Carole at the cafeteria at lunch break. She was manning the cash register today.
"Hey, thanks for the school materials that you sent," I said as I paid her for the food and drink on my tray.
"Of course," she said. "And sorry I had to send my brother to hand them over to you. I hope he behaved while he was at your house."
"Everything was cool," I lied. I was so tempted to say 'he has clung to me like super glue ever since.'
"What are you doing after classes?" she asked.
"I will be trying to catch up on my missed lessons," I replied.
"Well, good luck," she said. "Catch you later."
"Later gator," I said and walked over to a corner table to enjoy my lunch of fish fillet on a bun smothered with tartar sauce and a bottle of ice cold kiwi strawberry.
After my last class, I walked over to the walkway leading to where Yin was going to pick me up.
Halfway to the designated area, I saw Passawish approaching.
"My classes finished early,"he said with a bright smile.
"Are you here to pick up Carole?" I asked.
"No, I came to pick you up," he said, grinning from ear to ear.
"And where are you taking me?" I asked, just to humor him.
"To a quiet place where you can catch up on your missed lessons. I promise I won't disturb you," he replied.
"And where is that quiet place?" in spite of myself I got curious.
"Your bedroom," he replied, still with that wide smile on his face.
"Go home, Wish," I urged. "Yin is here now to pick me up."
"Oh, could you give me a ride home?"he asked.
I let out a loud sigh.
"Okay," I said, "Hop in."
Yin raised his eyebrow at Wish and me when I let Wish into the passenger seat beside me.
"Yin, could you please drive us over to Wish's home?" I said as soon as I made sure that Wish had his seat belt on.
"Does your father know about this?" Yin asked with a disapproving look.
"Hold on," I said, pulling my phone out of my pocket.
"Dad," I said as soon as I got my father on the phone. "Remember Wish, the one who brought over my school materials to the house yesterday evening?"
"Yes, what about him?" my father asked.
"He... he came over to my university this afternoon to hand over a page that he overlooked to give me yesterday," I said, internally wincing at my lie. "I have offered to give him a ride home for the favor." The lies kept piling up on me.
"Sure," said my father, "no problem. Just give Yin the address."
"Thank you, Dad," I said.
Then I tapped on my phone to search for Carole's address and then handed it to Yin so that he could input it on his map.
Yin took it without a word and after doing so he handed my phone back to me.
During the commute, Passawish was chatting to me non stop while I tried to put in a reply every now and then.
When we got to the gate of his house, to my deep dismay, after he unbuckled his seat belt, Wish moved up close to me and hugged me and kissed my forehead before getting out of the car.
"I'm going to pretend that I didn't see that," Yin commented before driving away.
"Don't jump to conclusions," I said. "I wasn't expecting him to do what he did."
Yin did not respond.
