Chapter 8: Campfire

Once again we were seated around a campfire, this time it was in the middle of the city, the Wheel of Fortune (which Aqua had named) loomed overhead, a dark patch against the dotted sky. The mood was ominous, each of us glanced for the slightest second at one another, waiting for someone to speak.

The firelight made shadows run across the ridges in Flame's face, who was seated across from me, he was poking a stick into the fire, occasionally pulling it out and studying the lone flame that danced upon the stick.

I was still tired from the drought of energy that resurrecting the girl had caused. Zephyr had delivered the news to me that the girl ran away after I saved her life.

Unable to bear the silence, I tried to make ample conversation. "You used to live across the street from me, before the Breach," I spoke to Glebe who mutely nodded in response.

I sighed, silence once again pierced the conversation of the group with the exception of the snapping and hissing of the fire.

"I think we should stay together," Aqua finally declared.

Spouts if murmuring radiated throughout the group, some of us supported the search for the humans, some of us wanted to finish our job first.

Zephyr stood, "they're obviously not surviving well,"

"I don't think it's safe," Aqua cried, "what if one of us dies? What is the point of finding our origin if we are dead?"

I had to admit, she had a point, if in an extremely blunt way.

"I think we should sleep on it," I muttered, but loud enough so I knew the group would hear.

Mutters of agreement whispered through the group and we all shuffled into our allocated sleeping areas. Knowing that unconsciousness would soon catch up to me I watched the dance of firelight until it caught me.

...

"Mum what's wrong?" The words were out of her mouth before the scene formed, Spes looked into her mother's eyes. Her mother closed the door and leaned against the pale peach wall, and sighed. She rubbed her temples and pinched her nose, making Spes worry, last time she had done the same actions, everything had changed.

The room was empty except for three moderate-sized boxes stacked in a triangle, a single window was thrown open, which overlooked the lovely view of a... Wooden fence. How nice.

Spes's mother rubbed her temples and winced in pain. "Spes, I didn't really want to tell you this but... Before I met your father, I was dating a businessman, and we had a child. Soon after, I left him because he was having an affair with his wife. He got custody of the child, her name was Miki,"

...

The dream wouldn't leave my mind the entire morning as the entire group decimated the rest of Brisbane, the tall buildings crushed into the ground with a final cry. I sat near the campsite, still not intent on leaving the area for fear of lurking humans.

So it was confirmed, Miki was my sister, and I was related to Glebe somehow, even if it meant being a sister-in-sister. If that was possible, I felt a pang of guilt for Glebe, he was the third wheel in this circle of relationships, even me, a total love amateur knew that.

As if reading my thoughts, Glebe arrived, walking causally but almost as if he was nervous. He sat on the Sponge next to me, "hey,"

"Hi," I replied.

He wrung out his fingers as one might wring out a dishcloth.

"Look Spirit, I'm sorry, for what happened... the other night,"

I was about to spit a retort back at him but a frantic call echoed in my head.

Guys! Come quick!

Very short I know, please don't kill me.
