Chapter 11: Burn

The setting formed, shifty at first however grew into focus, Glebe, Spes and Miki lounged on the steps of the front porch.
Glebe's inky hair was brushed to one side, his eyes were hidden behind ray bans. He wore a dark, leather jacket and his pants were also a dark, denim colour. His right knee was pulled up and his arm rested on his knee, Glebe's head rested upon the railing of the top step which he was situated. Miki was standing across from Spes, her hair was pulled into a ponytail, with her serrated fringe brushing her eyebrow. She wore a snowy, button-up shirt, which was tucked into a simple mini-skirt which barely passed halfway to her knees. Spes, like Miki, was standing, she was outfitted with a snowy dress which had the decency to at least touch her knees. Spes' hair was let down in its tangled glow.

Spes and Miki were deep in conversation, their giggles and repeated hand gestures gave away the fact that they were talking about a boy in their class. Glebe, attempting to maintain his cool, rubbed his temples in annoyance, girl talk literally went in one ear and out the other.

"And his eyes," Miki gushed, and completed a twirl.

"He's beau," Spes smiled, a blissful smile working its way onto her face.

In a posh-like tone Miki said, "I do believe Gale has the hots for you, young girl," she rose her non-existent teacup and drunk from it, her pinky finger stuck out at a ridiculous angle.

"No," Spes bushed a light shade of fuchsia, "not me,"

A moment of silence passed, the trio watched the occasional car drive by, Miki continued to sip her imaginary drink.
"No way," Miki dropped her "cup" and stared at the figure riding down the street.

Gale came riding down the street, his blonde hair rippling in the wind. He wore an open denim shirt and worn denim pants, underneath his shirt was a white singlet, which hugged every muscle in his torso.

When he was near he screeched to a stop, and waved at the trio, Glebe's scowl deepened. Miki and Spes went to greet him, and so he dismounted his bike, letting it fall to the ground.

"How's is going?" He chatted casually.

"Nothing much, except for the fact that there is approximately seven hundred and seventeen days until we finish one of the most rigorous learning experiences in our life," Spes shrugged.

"You figured that out just then?" She casually shrugged in response, like it was no big deal.

He leaned over the picket fence and looked into her eyes, "you really are one of a kind aren't you?"

...

The next few days were spent in concentrated work, slowly the drugs wore off and my legs returned to running a human pace. A deep root of uselessness had rooted inside of me, there was nothing I could do but sit around, and since Aqua had vouched the idea that we should stick together, I had been dragged around by another bender, slowing them down on their daily work.

The fire had been spitting sparks, the flames had been dancing ballet pirouettes around each other. My legs still weren't healed to the point of walking then but the nerves had begun to react again. Zephyr was sitting next to me, Aqua and Flame were in a similar position, Glebe sat alone, standing on the edge of the firelight, blending into the background, he often watched over us throughout the night, insisting that he was protecting us incase of another attack by the humans.
Mostly the guys would rotate shifts, Glebe and Flame being the most voluntary of us to keep watch and doing six-hour shifts through the night.

Sleep usually wasn't a problem for us, but extra rest would give us stronger control over our elements. Out of all of us, I seemed to sleep the most, and I sheepishly blamed this on a different type of element. Instead of bending the elements around me, I blended the elements within me, resulting in less endurance energy.

"We have to stay together," Aqua began, I immediately sensed that she was serious and was gathering her persuasive voice. Before the Breach Aqua would've been a successful business woman when she grew up.

Zephyr shifted his focus to her, rubbing his temples as she stood. I almost felt like mimicking the action, but maybe Aqua would have a valid perspective on this conversation.

"Look. I wouldn't be talking about this if there wasn't a problem. But there is, Spirit was abducted, right while we slept soundly, we can't pretend the world is our oyster anymore, we can't walk around like there isn't a threat watching us. We need to stick together,"

Especially Spirit. Her telepathic connection almost whispered.

"Drugged," I said.

"What?" She asked.

"You were drugged, a very strong one as well, you were asleep for three days," I grumbled.

"All the more reason why we should stick together," Aqua's voice was rising, if there were humans watching us I'd be sure they could hear her.

"Okay," Zephyr sighed and laid his head on his pack, pretending a facade of sleep.

"What?" I snapped at him, knowing I was against having a babysitter.

He sat up and gave me that look, his head was tilted at a 45 degree angle and tilted forwards. His eyebrows were drawn together and the whole look said, really, you want me to explain? Which is what he said next.

"Look, Spirit, your obviously the main target for the humans, look at yourself, you can't even walk, much less run,"

The tone of his voice made me stiffen, I shot him a venomous look (which probably wasn't very good as I didn't have the best of training) I knew I was weak, but saying it aloud (or telepathically) was another thing altogether.

I stood, determined to make a point, with the most corrosive look I could muster I spun on my heel and with a little help from my ability I stalked off into the newly formed forestry.

"Spirit wait!" He called, from a standing position, then jogged to keep up with me.

My mouth was set in a firm line, a mixture of rage and fury bubbled inside of me. Something inside of him changed, he must've noticed that I wasn't going to give in like a gooey girl and make up for it later. He caught up with me and spun me around by my my shoulder, "Spirit, please,"

"I'm not going to be babysat because of a minor threat," I snarled.

He looked taken back, then his eyes hardened into something else, "minor?" He questioned, "you think they're a minor threat? They flipping kidnapped you! Drugged the rest of us and took away your ability to walk,"

"Temporarily," I muttered.

"That's not the point,"

"Then what is Zephyr?" I exploded, "What's the point of this argument? What's the point of our lives? Why are we slaving around on nothing more than a hunch? Tell me,"

"I don't know!" He cried.

"That's right." I glared into his eyes, "you don't know,"

Then I turned away, minuscule vines supporting the weight my legs couldn't, leaving behind Zephyr and stalking into the darkness.

I had barely stormed ten meters when a deep wave of nausea overcame me and I fell to the ground, the world swirling into darkness.

I'd awoken some time after, able to walk, the group vouched for several theories in why my sudden lash of unconsciousness claimed me. Honestly, I didn't care, whatever had happened, I was now able to walk, not run, but a stumbling speed walk at best.

Despite my feeble rebuttal, I'd given into Zephyr's request of "babysitting" which he was evidently pleased with.

"I'm just going to slow down your work," I protested, while trying some leg stretches.

"We have till the end of the world anyway," he dismissed, "this is our last city,"

"Then we can live our lives in peace," I sighed, a blissful smile working its way onto my face.

A few of us had planned of what we chose to do after the finishing of the world, Glebe vouched to search for our parents (which would be basically impossible), Zephyr wanted to settle down in a place in the sky, Aqua and Flame were also content in settling down and raising some little steam children.

Honestly, I could do any of them, staying with Zephyr in his cloud castle seemed tantalising, but the information for what happened before the Breach also seemed like a equally interesting option.

With a start I realised that information could be accessed through the Human Tribe, despite being wild and raw from years of tough survival, they seemed like somewhat sharing people.

They're just desperate, a voice in my head whispered. They need you're help, otherwise they'll die.

But they're crazy! Another voice in my head cried, they drugged us! Poisoned us with their no-walking drug!

The fight within me decreased, confusion lingered, confusion at the motives of these people. This, raw bunch of survivalists, that had somehow managed to outlast the days of the rest of the human race.

Obviously they were scared, fear held an element in everyone's life, lest the trials or tribulations they currently faced.
They were dying, a dark picture of the state of the camp area where they treated their sick. Makeshift beds holding dying humans of all ages; children, females and males. Water bottles littered the area, finding objectives whenever the wind blowed.

A wave of flames roared, the air turned hot and brittle, sparks brushed past me, fleeing in frantic movements.

The new threat pushed my current thoughts aside, I searched for him within the roaring tsunami of fire.

"FLAME!" I cried and slowly backed away from the wall of fire like it was a wild animal. Fear began to claw at me as I searched for his figure.

"I'M OVER HERE!" He shouted, a small section of the firewall, bent down, Flame slid down the blaze, surfer style, "what's wrong? Did the humans come? Are you ok?" A deep side of embarrassment coloured on my cheeks.

I looked towards the encampment which was situated barely a hundred meters away, finding a feeble excuse to why I suddenly freaked, "um, the fire is too close to the camp,"

"Don't worry, I've got it," he waved a hand at the inferno and the flames visibly receded, "walk with me?"

We walked along the treeline, every few moments I glanced over at the flames. They danced in elaborate steps, jumping in fright when a flurry of sparks burst (often accompanied be a loud snap).

"Flame?" I asked.

"Yes?" He replied.

"Do you have dreams of your past life while your asleep?"

"Yes, one time you were in one,"

"We used to be great friends," I finished.

"Then you moved," he stated, in a flat voice.

"I'm sorry, I don't even remember why we moved in the first place,"

"It's all good," he shrugged, "Aqua or Assana, took it hard when you left, but then, she finally trusted in me,"

I recalled some of Spes' memories, Assana and Flint could be no more opposite.

"She used to hate you," I snorted, and with a dramatic jazz hand movement I announced, "Flint Carl, bane of the existence of Assana..." I frowned, trying to recall Aqua's previous last name, nothing came to mind.

A smile tugged at Flame's cheek, "thanks for making me feel better, now I believe your boyfriend is awaiting,"

We had stepped out of the line of trees, I looked to the encampment and saw Zephyr striding towards me.

Flame gave a nod before disappearing back into the treeline, Zephyr clasped my hand and smiled, "wow,"

"What?"

"Your like the only person, who isn't Flame's girlfriend, that made him smile,"

"What's wrong with that?"

"Nothing," he shook his head, "you really are one of a kind,"
