Bike

(Evan is 8, Michael is 15)

"I'm scared," Evan spoke, looking up at his brother with fear hinted eyes. "What if I fall?"
"That's why you have kneepads and a helmet," Michael responded to the boy, knocking on his dark blue helmet. "The worse that could happen is you hit a tree or somethin'." Evan bit his lip nervously. "Can..you show me how you do it?" He asked timidly. "Please?" Michael let out a soft huff before putting on a small smile, nodding. "Fine. But you have to promise you'll try if after. Kay?" He responded, Evan nodding quickly. Michael walked up the driveway, grabbing his hike from its spot. He made it face down the driveway, getting on it. He kicked off, pedaling to show Evan how he did it. Evan gripped the handles to his bike, getting on it nervously. He struggled to stay sitting, a slight look of frustration forming on his face. "I cant– stay still," he announced, Michael getting off of his bike and approaching.
"Here. I'll hold it still so you can get used to it. Alright?" He hummed, holding the back of Evan's bike so he could at least get on. "Just start pedaling." Evan gave another nod as he finally sat on the bike, feet pushing down on the pedals. The bike began to move, Michael quickly following to continue holding the bike still. Evan began to feel better about riding the bike, grip slightly loosening on the handles and he continued to pedal. "Turn," Michael hummed as they reached the end of the driveway, Evan turning to the right so he could go down the street. A smile began to form on his face as he giggled. "I'm doing it!" He said happily, Michael grinning. Without saying so, he let go of the bike to see if it would affect anything. It didn't, Evan kept biking. "Evan– Evan tURN!" Michael called, seeing that Evan was beginning to head off of the road. Hearing Michael call made Evan panic, him looking over his shoulder to see why he sounded so far away. "Som of a bitch," Michael cursed quietly as Evan crashed into a tree, him running over quickly.

Evan sniffled slightly as his mother put a bandaid on his cheek, hands and arms stinging slightly at the scrapes and cuts he had received. "There. All better?" She asked, Evan nodding slightly. "Ah, he'll be fine," William hummed as he walked by, ruffling Evan's hair. "How'd you crash again?" He asked, furrowing his brows.
"I let go of the bike," Michael answered, arms crossed as he leaned against the wall. He couldn't help but feel a bit guilty. William nodded. "Fair enough. That's how I got you to learn," he hummed. Evan then looked at his hands, seeing the bandaid on them. "It doesn't hurt that bad anymore," he spoke, looking up at Michael. "I thought you meant the worst would be I get splinters in my face, or a branch up my nose," he continued, earning a soft giggle from Michael.
