i suppose we accept the love

that we think we deserve

because here i am ready to leave

to turn away from a good man

who would drop his entire world

so i can know that i'm his world

i'll deny myself the simple pleasures

of a life of freedom and choice

continuing to punish myself over and over

for i do not think i am a good woman

but here he stands before me

year after year i have denied myself

ready to offer me wine and blackberries

even though my own hands are barren

and i will not turn away this time
