One Fine Cruise Trip
One thing that Mike Summers wanted in life was to check that bucket list of his, especially the one that says Travelling in Style. Hence, to a cruise ship he went. A vast expanse of the sapphire ocean, white fluffy clouds masking the heat of the sun, ladies in bikinis and a shot of dirty martini were everything he had expected to see in such an expensive kind of trip. If only he knew about an imminent accident to happen in the middle of the trip, he would've wished that he slept five more minutes.
If only he had tapped the snooze button, five more minutes of sleep would've been added to his life. Then, he would've woke up just a tad late. He would've been stuck in the traffic light when it jammed. He would've resorted to running to the next block, going against the flow of a huge number of tourists, just to get a taxi. Then, he would've been more delayed as the taxi driver took the wrong turn because he misunderstood the directions given to him. He would then be stuck for at least ten more minutes as they let a parade of protesters pass through.
Then, he would've missed the ship. Just five minutes of snooze would've saved his life. But he was not the kind of man who snooze.
And so,he found himself on a piece of scrap metal that bears some of the letters of the shipping line's name, floating in a midst of a fiery inferno in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean under a fine star-filled night sky.
What had gone wrong? He thought. He only had minutes to retrospect as the familiar dorsal fin of a fearsome ocean predator drew closer to him.
There was no way he could anticipate what happened, nor anybody for that matter. It was a clear and lovely day and an even peaceful night. So, he couldn't rationalise why the ship suddenly tipped sideways. The captain himself was caught off guard. But he did remember one thing, a drunk man shouting 'the moon has suddenly disappeared'.
By then, Mike was enjoying the company of a pretty lady who was ranting about the struggles she went through just to get to this cruise ship, about her recent heartbreak and how she looks forward to starting a new life after the cruise. Mike was starting to feel like the protagonist in a romantic movie set in one of the world's most exquisite cruise trip. How can he not? After all, they are both wearing gala attire for the Titanic themed Ball that night as they both cradled their own cocktails in their hands while enjoying the lively environment in the magradome.
But this wasn't a romantic story.
The drunk man shouting about the moon ruined the moment. Seconds after he heard the man, a chain of screaming and cursing commenced. Then, everything tipped sideways. The 80's music that filled the room turned to a cacophony of shouting, glasses shattering and the ominous sound of cranking metal. Mike didn't even get the chance to catch the broken-hearted lady as she fell towards one of the windows of the hall. The next thing he could recall was the pain of having been hit on the head by something hard.
If only Mike had watch that YouTube Video about the Top 10 strange events that happened in the Ocean, he would've known what it was. A rogue wave. A wave that appears out of nowhere that can grow up to a hundred feet or beyond without warning. The wave that, only recently, science have proven to be a reality rather than myth. If only he'd seen this video, it would've at least deterred him or made him have second thoughts about going on to this trip given his paranoid personality.
But it was all too late. Death's jaw had already gripped his mid-section.
