Chapter Twenty-One
The wind whistled and pounded at the windows of their small and cozy apartment. Percy peered down at Annabeth, who was wrapped in a blanket and still asleep, the noise not waking her.
He looked up and realized their movie was over and that the annoying menu song was playing over and over again. He sighed and reluctantly pulled himself off the couch, stretching his legs as he went.
After he turned off the television he headed over to the window to peak outside. Snow was in the forecast that night, and Percy was curious to see if it was correct.
Just as he'd expected, white clouds of fluffy snow flakes were pouring out of the sky and landing on the ground, covering the whole city in a white blanket.
A grin appeared on his face as he ran over to Annabeth, carefully crouching next to her. "Annabeth."
No response.
"Annabeth, wake up," he whispered. "It's snowing outside!"
Whenever it first snowed, Percy always shared the experience with Annabeth. Ever since living in California for several years without snow, they had both grown to miss it.
Percy exhaled deeply before lightly shaking Annabeth, causing her to weakly open her eyes and peer up at him. She had a questioning look on her face, so Percy filled her in. "It's snowing. For the first time."
Annabeth sat up slowly, a small and vague smile appearing on her face. "Well, it's almost Thanksgiving. And, by the way, you're like a child, Percy."
Percy grinned and rushed over to the window, intensely peering out at the small storm.
She joined him at the window and wrapped the blanket around herself and Percy. "We should be expecting a call from Sally any minute now."
When they lived in California Sally would call them whenever it snowed since they couldn't get to see it. Estelle loved it, too and often joined Sally on her calls.
After a few minutes of breathlessly staring out the window, Percy's cell started ringing. He reluctantly removed his arm from Annabeth's shoulder and reached for his phone.
"Hey, mom," he said immediately. "It's snowing."
She laughed half heartedly. "I noticed. That's part of the reason I called."
"Part?" Percy asked curiously while still eyeing the snow outside. "What's the other part?"
"Well you and Annabeth are married now," Sally started.
Percy nodded and chuckled. "Uh, yes. I noticed, actually."
"I thought it would be nice for you two to, you know, host Thanksgiving this year. Since you're married and all and I thought you two needed the practice," Sally explained simply. After all, I won't be hosting Thanksgiving forever."
Percy stared out the window, his face quickly turning worried. "W-what? Really?"
Sally laughed. "Yes, really. I trust your cooking ability. And besides, Annabeth can handle anything."
"What's Sally saying?" Annabeth asked, her face turning concerned. "What's wrong?"
"Okay, mom!" Percy said, a confident smile appearing on his face. "We'll do it!"
"Great, that's just amazing!" Sally said, clearly relived. "I'll bring the stuffing and potatoes, you guys can do the rest."
Annabeth's eyes widened. "What did you sign us up for?"
"Love you, mom," Percy said, assuring Annabeth he'd tell her in a moment. "See you at Thanksgiving."
After exchanging goodbyes, Percy hung up and explained the plan to an equally confident Annabeth. At first she'd been skeptical until Percy threw in the part about Sally thinking she could anything. That compliment, of course, went straight to her head.
"We'll go grocery shopping in the morning and prepare all the rest of tomorrow," Annabeth planned aloud. "Wow, this is going to be great."

"Okay, remember why we came here," Annabeth said as she pulled out a cart. "Thanksgiving shopping. Sally sent us a list of things to get to help us out, so hopefully this won't take too long."
They had a habit of taking too long for shopping and being easily distracted, but not today. Oh, no. Today was different. They had planned on shopping and nothing would distract them, not even cute puppies people had brought to the store.
Percy scowled as he looked at the list on his phone. His mind ached just trying to figure out how any of these things could even make a recipe. "Are you sure we need all of this, Annabeth?"
Whenever he was in cooking doubt he turned to Annabeth. It wasn't like she was a master chef or anything, but she was what he had on hand. And sometimes it's just good to have someone else's opinion. Annabeth had also grew up cooking lots of meals for her younger siblings. It's not like they were excellent, but neither Bobby nor Matthew had died yet, so Percy took that as a good sign.
"Let me see that list," Annabeth said as she snatched the phone from Percy's hand. She furrowed her eyebrows as she scrolled through the list. Percy watched her anxiously, looking for some indication she knew what she was doing.
"So?" Percy asked hopefully as Annabeth handed him his phone back. She readjusted her coat before pushing the cart triumphantly through the shoppers and over to the produce area. "Annabeth? Hello!"
She whipped away from the potatoes she was eyeing up to face Percy. "We've got this, Percy. We just need to buy the ingredients listed. It's not that hard. Send me that list. I'll get the produce and you can go to the aisles. We'll meet at the canned section. Okay?"
Percy nodded, miffed by Annabeth's all knowing aura. How could she understand any of this? "Alright, I'll do that. I'll, uh, buy the stuff. I can do this."
"Of course you can, Percy. With me at your side," Annabeth assured him with a suave smile. "We've saved Olympus together twice. If we can't grocery shop, who can?"
A few eavesdropping mortals frowned in confusion, but Percy didn't notice. Annabeth's words had power, and Percy genuinely believed her.
~
Mounds of food in reusable bags sat on Percy and Annabeth's kitchen counter, towering over both of them who'd both lost their burst of confidence. The amount of food they bought couldn't be described as anything but menacing. They were terrifying and make them even more scared when they realized they had to cook with them.
"So...where to begin?" Percy asked, a joking undertone in his voice. He was trying to remain being confident, but his worry had slipped into his voice.
Annabeth smiled before approaching the mound of food. She carefully opened one bag, revealing the turkey. "I mean....start with the biggest challenge, right?"
Percy's eyes revealed his true terror, but he nodded along. "Uh? Sure. That seems rights. I'll google a recipe."
After searching the Internet for several minutes, Percy found nothing remotely understandable. After Annabeth had tried and failed, they both knew they were doomed.
"Hello?" The sound of a familiar voice buzzed through their sound system. "You guys home?"
Percy, glad someone else was there, rushed to the door. He let the guest in.
"Are you guys okay?" Jason asked as he noticed Annabeth sitting on the floor next to the turkey.
Percy sighed. "Do we look okay?"
Jason laughed and scooped up the turkey. He set in on the oven before turning the oven on. "There. Now can I help you unload some groceries?"
Percy and Annabeth huddled in the corner after the groceries were put away, staring at Jason in amazement. The second he started cooking they both assumed Jason was a master chef who knew what he was doing.
"Uh, how does he know how to do all this?" Percy whispered quietly to Annabeth.
She scrunched her eyebrows. She looked somewhat fascinated. "Shh, I don't want to disturb him..."
They both watched in awe as Jason gracefully moved around the kitchen, occasionally assigning them simple tasks like chopping up vegetables or bringing him certain ingredients.
After a few hours, almost all of the food was cooked and Percy and Annabeth felt as if everything had been a dream.
"How do you, uh....know how to do this?" Percy asked curiously.
Jason shrugged as he placed something in their fridge. "I dunno. I mean, at New Rome everyone kinda pitches in, and I used to have to provide for myself. I guess I just learned how to cook along the way."
Annabeth blinked. "Well, thank you. So so much. We seriously owe you."
"No problem, I enjoyed it, really," Jason said. "I should get home now. Piper's probably freaking out. I left her alone with all the food, so who knows what happened."
"Thanks, again," Percy said, still in awe. He nodded before leaving.
Annabeth turned to Percy. "Did you know he could do that?"
Percy shook his head. "No clue. Now let's eat."
"Thanksgiving is tomorrow not today," Annabeth retorted.
"Who's gonna count the rolls anyways?" Percy asked as he opened the fridge, a mischievous expression on his face. Then he handed a roll to Annabeth, making her drops any protest.
