Chapter Thirty-Eight

"Mom, you've gotta get here now!" Percy yelled to his phone as he ran through the unfamiliar halls of a hospital.

Rain was falling and, although Percy was on the bottom floor, it was quite loud. He was soaking wet and freezing, as November rain was very close to snow.

"Why? Are you okay? Are Annabeth and Marina okay?" Sally asked frantically, hearing the panic in Percy's voice.

Percy rushed into an elevator and started pressing the buttons. "Yeah, but Annabeth's in labor."

Sally gasped. "But she's not due until late December! I thought the 31st!"

"I did, too! We all did!" he cried. "She was just watching Marina and it happened and I had to leave work early and Marina is just here—!"

"Calm down, Percy, I'm on my way!" Sally cried. "Everything's going to be okay."

Percy nodded as the elevator doors opened. "Okay, mom, I'll see you soon."

Several hours later the waiting room on Annabeth's floor was flocked with people of all kind. Demigods, mortals, immortals, and more all stood, waiting for news.

Then Percy walked out of the delivery room, a wide grin on his face. "It's a boy! Ten fingers, ten toes. Annabeth's doing great."

"Can I see them?" Sally asked, immediately jumping to her feet. Marina was in her arms.

Percy nodded. "Yeah, follow me—"

Then Marina's cried interrupted him.

"Sorry, she's really hungry," Sally said. "I tried to find some food for her, but it was hopeless navigating this hospital."

"I've got her," Percy said, taking Marina into his arms. "You go see Annabeth and the baby, I'll get Marina some food."

Sally shook her head. "No, Percy, I can help, really—"

"Mom."

Sally sighed and walked to Annabeth's room, knowing Percy wouldn't budge. Percy then walked to the elevator and pressed a button which he assumed would lead him to the food court.

"They ages baby food at hospitals, right?" Percy asked Marina. She just glared at him. "I mean, old people have no teeth like babies, so at the very least we can get you some old people food."

Marina didn't seem to care, but at the mention of food she squirmed, clearly agitated.

"I know. I'm hungry, too," Percy admitted. Then the elevator doors opened and Percy walked out.

The cafeteria was no where to be found, the same with any nurses or doctors nearby. Eventually Percy found himself at a vending machine praying they had any sort of food a baby could eat.

"You like apples, right?" Percy asked Marina. "You've eaten them before. I think..."

"Nana," she replied.

"You want your grandma?" Percy asked.

Marina furrowed her eyebrows and shook her head. Then she pointed at the vending machine. "Nana."

Percy peered into the machine and saw a banana and nodded. He placed Marina down and got out his wallet. "Banana? Okay, I think you can eat that...."

He inserted a dollar, which was spat back at him. He groaned and tried over and over before settling with a different bill. Then, after another struggle with the machine, he was holding the banana.

"Here you go, Mari," he said, turning to hand her her banana only to release that he was alone. "Uh....Marina? Marina!"

He peered around the small vending area only to be more confused. Where the hell is she?!

After searching the nearby halls Percy began to panic. He quickly pulled out his phone to call Annabeth before releasing she was exhausted and would kill him if she ever knew.

After much struggle of deciding what to do, he called the only person he thought could help—Leo.

"Percy, where are you? Everyone's getting kinda nervous," Leo said when he picked up.

Percy sighed and stared at the ground. "I'm fine. It's just—I....I...."

"Just spit it out already!"

"I lost Marina!" he admitted. Leo gasped dramatically. Percy rolled his eyes. "Now please don't tell anyone and distract them until I find her, okay?"

Leo groaned. "Fine, but you owe me. This baby better be named Leo Jr."

"I'll suggest it to Annabeth," replied Percy. "Oh, can you also send Hazel down here? I'm by the vending machines on the ground floor."

"Sure. Don't lose yourself in the meantime," Leo said, causing Percy to hang up. In a matter of minutes a frantic Hazel arrived.

"Oh my Gods, Percy!" Hazel squealed. "Where have you looked?"

He shrugged. "All around. Don't be too frantic or you'll scare Marina."

Hazel huffed. "I'm not worried about Marina. She's Annabeth daughter, she's smart. I'm worried about you. Annabeth'll kill you if she ever finds out!"

"Thanks for the reassurance," Percy murmured quietly as Hazel led him around the main floor.

"Where could she be?!" Hazel shrieked. "We've checked the whole ground floor! Can she climb stairs yet? Or maybe an elevator?"

Percy groaned and rubbed his temple. "Gods, I hope not..."

Hazel sighed and stared down at her shoes. "Maybe we should wait here by the vending machines. Maybe she'll come back to you?"

"Better than my plan," Percy huffed as he tousled his hair.

"Which was?"

"Nothing."

Then, as if a beacon of hope, Frank walked into the small alcove, Marina in his arms. "Leo told me to come here if I found Marina."

Hazel stood up and swooped Marina out of his arms. "Where was she?!"

"Found her wandering the halls near the waiting room upstairs," he replied. "Why? Did—did you two lose her?"

Percy grinned. "Not important. All that matters is that my kid is a genius! She went back to the waiting area!"

"That's her Annabeth showing," Hazel said. "Now lets get back to the room. I'm sure Annabeth will be wondering about us and Marina."

They all went back upstairs to Annabeth, who was more than ecstatic to see them. In her arms was a small bundle of blankets.

"There you two are," Annabeth said as Percy entered holding Marina. "What took you so long?"

"Someone was hungry," Percy said.

Annabeth raised an eyebrow. "Which one?"

Percy laughed. "Marina. I got her a banana."

"She ate it already?" she asked. Percy cursed. "You lost it, didn't you?"

He nodded. "Yes, I did. And that is the only thing I have lost today or ever."

Annabeth opened her mouth to speak but before she could Leo, Hazel, Frank, and Piper walked inside.

"Is that him?" Piper asked as she walked over to Annabeth's side, a wide smile on her face.

Annabeth nodded. "It's a boy. Six pounds, seven ounces."

"Any name ideas?" Frank asked. Leo piped up to speak before Piper elbowed him in the ribcage.

"No, we thought we'd have more time," Annabeth admitted. "He's perfect, though. Name or not."

Leo nodded. "Just don't lose this one."

This time Hazel elbowed Leo in the rib cage.

"Wait, what?" Annabeth asked, peering up at Percy nervously. "What is Leo talking about?"

Piper grimaced. "I think we should let you two kids catch up..."

The group awkwardly shuffled out, leaving Percy with a very suspicious Annabeth.

"Did you lose Marina?" Annabeth asked, keeping her voice down to not wake the baby.

Percy scratched the back of his head. "Technically, yes. But I found her! Almost within the hour!"

Annabeth rolled her eyes. "You're lucky I can't yell right now or you'd be dead. If you ever lose her again, I swear—"

"You'll kill me," Percy finished for her. "I know."

"At least you know," Annabeth said with a small smile. "At least you know...."
