Chapter Five

Annabeth quickly pushed open her apartment door and ran in, her phone clutched in her hand along with her keys.

"Percy!" Annabeth squealed. "Percy, are you home?"

Annabeth had been out interviewing for a job she now wouldn't need to get, as she'd just got a call informing her that she could start as a junior architect at a well known firm.

"I'm right here," Percy said and ran in from the living room clutching Riptide. "What's wrong?"

"I got the job," Annabeth said with a smile. "I got the job!"

"What?! That's awesome!" Percy said and pulled her into a hug.

He was proud of her, but also disappointed in himself. Out of the five job interviews he'd been on recently, only one had called him back and it was about him leaving his keys there.

"We need to go out and celebrate," Percy decided. "I'll make a reservation somewhere fancy. Go get ready."

Annabeth narrowed her eyes at him. "Can we afford somewhere fancy?"

"Annabeth, you just got a new job. We're going out to celebrate," Percy said with a slight grin on her face. She nodded and ran to their bedroom to get changed.

Percy quickly pulled out his phone and searched the number for a fancy Italian place a bit far from their house. He made a reservation for two in half an hour and then joined Annabeth to get ready.

"How do I look?" Annabeth asked as he walked in. She had changed out of her interviewing pantsuit to a nice gray dress which complimented her figure nicely.

"Amazing," Percy replied and pulled her into a hug. "I'm so proud of you."

She blushed. "Thanks. Now go get ready!"

She fished around her accessory box while Percy selected some dress pants, a nice button up shirt, a tie, and a black suit jacket.

"What's the need for ties?" Percy asked as he tied his. "They're just pieces of fabric hanging off a shirt. That's weird."

Annabeth paused. "That is weird. I suppose it's used to keep the shirt closed better so you're not cold. I guess the tie part is really for decoration, though."

"And that is why I love you," Percy said as he took her hand, leading her out of the apartment. "You know useless facts about ties."

Annabeth smiled as he flicked off the lights and locked the door. Soon they were in a taxi headed to the restaurant.

"Where are we headed?" Annabeth asked as Percy secretly whispered the address to the taxi driver.

"It's a surprise," Percy said. As soon as Annabeth opened her mouth Percy spoke again. "No guessing."

She sighed and slumped against the wall of the taxi. "That's the fun part!"

Percy smiled and took her hand. "I know you'll love it."

"Percy, even if you took me to the sewers I wouldn't be mad. A bit confused and concerned, but not mad."

They shared a laugh.

The taxi finally pulled up at a fancily dressed Italian restaurant with large windows, beautiful fairy lights, and a romantic aura.

"You didn't!" Annabeth squealed as they climbed out of the cab. "You know how much I love this place!"

This certain restaurant was one Percy had taken Annabeth to when they had first started dating for the anniversary of them meeting in June. Back then they'd both been broke high schoolers borrowing money from their parents and getting weird looks as they ate. It didn't help they had underdressed and brought their weapons with them in case.

"Do you two have a reservation?" a man wearing a nice suit asked them as they entered the restaurant.

Percy nodded. "It's under Jackson."

The man typed into his computer and frowned.

"Is there a problem?" Annabeth asked.

"Yes, you see your reservation is for seven and it is, oh," he said and checked his watch, "seven twelve."

"It's only twelve minutes!" Percy complained.

"I'm sorry, we have a strict schedule here," he said fakely and continued working.

"It's fine," Annabeth assured Percy. "I'm sure we could just find somewhere else. I think I saw an Olive Garden a few blocks down, I'm sure we could walk there."

"No, you're not walking anywhere tonight. You got that big promotion and you're getting a nice dinner," Percy said. "Now go wait outside while I have a little discussion with this nice man."

"Percy?" Annabeth asked. He swallowed and nodded. "It's no big deal, okay? I'm alright with eating anywhere as long as it's with you."

"If your heart is really set on eating here you could add your name to the list of names," the man said, piping into the conversation.

"What's the waiting time?" Annabeth asked.

He peered down at the list of names on the screen of his computer. "About two hours."

"Two hours?!" Annabeth asked. "Let's just go, Perce."

"No, no. Let's wait," Percy mumbled. Annabeth frowned and convinced herself it was best not to argue with him. He'd grow hungry in a few minutes and give up on the restaurant.

"What's your name?" he asked.

"Jackson."

"It's been added."

Percy led Annabeth about the restaurant and through the line of people already waiting to the back. After a few dedicated minutes of waiting Percy's stomach growled.

"I'm going to go ask for an update," Percy said.

"I'm sure it won't be long," Annabeth lied. "Stay here with me."

Percy sighed. "I'll be right back, I promise."

He walked quickly into the restaurant, nothing breaking his stride. He made his way up to the front where the man glanced at him and frowned, clearly annoyed.

"It's not your turn yet," he said dully.

Percy sighed. "I need to get into tonight, sir."

"And why?"

"My-my girlfriend, who I've known for more than ten years just got found an amazing job, her first one out of college. And I thought tonight was a great night to do this," Percy said and pulled a small box out of his pocket. He opened it so the diamond ring inside could be revealed. "And I wanted to take her here since we went here once when we were in high school and it was super romantic. I love her so much and I just want her to have a great night. A perfect one, actually."

The man didn't seem amused. "I've heard about five other stories like yours tonight. I'm sorry, I'm doing all that I can."

Percy, somehow, didn't believe that. He bit back his complaints and shoved past a bunch of people to get back outside. That's when he spotted them. Two hellhounds bouncing down the streets eagerly. They reminded him of Mrs.O'Leary, expect they were mean and full of anger and destruction.

Percy ran back to Annabeth who had already pulled out her dagger and was ready to fight.

"Can we take them?" Percy asked.

Annabeth nodded. "It's only two. I'll take the one on the right, you take left."

They immediately were in position and ready. They were so used to each other's fighting style that it was their own nature now.

They quickly eliminated the hellhounds. They were easy and common monsters to them with their levels of training. Then more appeared.

"That's at least ten," Annabeth said as she gazed at them. "I don't think we can take them."

"Where are we supposed to go to escape them?" Percy asked.

"Camp," Annabeth replied confidently and nodded. "Definitely camp. They have more people and the border. Taxi!"

A taxi quickly pulled up and they slipped inside. "Delphi Strawberry Services."

The driver sped quickly and soon they were only miles away from camp. Soon their anxiety had dropped and they felt actually safe, until...

The driver abruptly stopped the cab and turned to face them. They were greeted with her red eyes and flaming hair.

"Kelly," Percy cursed. "What are you doing out of Tartarus?"

"Well, I've regenerated," she said with a grin. "Now, Percy, why don't I take you back to my place and we have a little catch up and chit chat."

Annabeth thought fast and cut through Kelly with her dagger, completely decapitating her. She hissed as she went and turned into dust which stung their eyes.

"Move!" Annabeth yelled and shoved open the doors. They jumped out and started running towards camp.

"Ow!" Annabeth yelped. "My foot! My foot!"

Percy peered down at her foot which was covered in blood. She had taken off her heels for speed purposes and had stepped in glass.

"Do you need me to carry you?" Percy asked desperately, trying not to pay attention at how fast the hellhound army was approaching.

"No, no. I'll stick it through," she said shakily through barred teeth. They started moving again, but much slower than before. After a few protests Percy scooped Annabeth into his arms.

"Are you okay?" Percy asked as he started to tread up the hill leading to camp.

Annabeth nodded. "I will be as soon as we cross that barrier."

They finally made it up the hill and they sighed with relief. Percy placed Annabeth down where she balanced herself on one foot. Then he decided. The moment wasn't perfect, but it would do.

Percy got down on one knee, his head and body full of nervousness and anticipation. He knew Annabeth would say yes, yet he was still nervous. After all they'd gone through she couldn't say no, right?

"Percy, what are you doing?" Annabeth asked.

"Annabeth Chase, wow I don't know how to even begin on your amazing-ness. I guess I'll keep it simple, unlike you. Ever since the moment I viewed you I could tell you were special. You're brave, beautiful, intelligent, and I can't think of spending my life with anyone else."

Then he pulled out the ring.

"Will you marry me?"

Tears welled in both of their eyes as Annabeth pulled Percy up from the ground and kissed him.

"So is that a yes?"

"Yes!"

"Who's there?" Percy and Annabeth turned to face Grover with an army of kids in a mix of pajamas and weapons.

"It's just us!" Percy said and jokingly raised his arms in surrender. Grover sighed with relief and ran to them. He pulled them both into a hug.

"What are you two doing here?" he asked as the campers groaned and walked off.

"Well, we got chased here," Annabeth said, "by hellhounds."

Grover frowned. "They came to your apartment?"

"No, we were going out to eat," Percy said. "Annabeth got a promotion."

"That's doesn't matter," Annabeth said and smiled brightly. She lifted her hand so Grover could see her ring.

He stared at it before facing them. "You two are engaged?!"

They nodded in confirmation and he squealed before running off into camp.

"Where is he headed?" Percy asked as he helped Annabeth into the main part of camp. They finally located Grover with a large group of campers, surrounding him like an army.

Annabeth frowned. "Grover, what are you-"

Annabeth was cut off by the roaring of campers. They quickly scooped both Percy and Annabeth off the grown and carried them.

"What's happening?" Percy yelled over the noise.

"Can't you tell, punk?"

"Clarisse?"

Grover held up his phone for Percy to see. Clarisse, sure enough, was on Grover's phone via video chat. She wore a tight grin.

"The one and only," Clarisse said smugly. "Now dump 'em in the lake!"

The campers cheered and rushed to the lake. Percy quickly located Annabeth's hand across the crowd and intertwined it with his. He squeezed her hand reassuringly.

"Three, two, one!" the campers shouted before shoving them into the canoe lake. There Percy located Annabeth and willed all the sea foam and bubbles to transform into one giant bubble around them.

"Shall we stay here a bit longer?" Percy asked and grinned smugly.

"I think we shall," Annabeth said and laughed before pulling him into a deep kiss.

There he pulled her into another kiss, the best underwater kiss of all time, topping the original.
