Chapter ~29~ Percy's POV~ In The Streets of New York~
I had my hands inside my pockets, walking down the bustling streets.
I took a small glance up and saw a slight glint of armor above me. I scanned the roof tops and I could just barely make out the outline of two people on top of a building.
I looked around the street, looking for Annabeth, but I couldn't see her. My mouth turned slightly down at the edges in worry. But I knew she was safe. Well, probably, I hoped.
I sighed and stopped walking. Out plan probably wasn't going to work. I hadn't seen any signs of Calypso or Loki, and we had been out here for hours. Ok, maybe just two hours, but I was getting inpatient and my feet were getting sore. I leaned against the side of a building and looked around. Maybe we should just go back to the Tower and rethink this.
I was just about to start making my way back to Stark Towers, when I caught a slight whiff of cinnamon. I tensed, pulling Riptide out of my pocket out of instinct, leaving it in pen form for the moment, just in case. The smell grew stronger, and I put my guard up, prepared to strike at any moment.
"Hello, Percy.." a soft and comforting voice whispered into my ear, as if spoken by an angel. I wanted to curl up and listen to that voice, just let everything go and zone out of the world.
I shook my head. No. This was Calypso. She was trying to do something to me.
"Miss me?" the voice questioned. I blinked several times. Yes, I was sure it was Calypso now. I started to feel drowsy.
I stifled a yawn. Why was I so tired all of a sudden? I shook my head once more, trying to clear the sudden fatigue away. I blinked drowsily, and as soon as I opened my eyes, the previously busy streets were empty. No one in sight.
Except for one person.
Standing in the middle of the road, a girl in a white dress stood, her long hazel hair running down her back in loose strands. It was Calypso.
"Calypso." I almost growled, the anger inside bubbling up once more. I let it consume me.
"Hello Percy. " She smiled kindly. I took a step towards her, yet my motions felt slowed and sluggish, as if i were walking through jello.
"Now now Percy," she scolded, "it took a considerable amount of power to conjure up this trick, so I would deeply appreciate it if you would just cooperate for a little. "
"And why should I listen to you?" I snapped.
"Because," she reasoned, "I can control you. "
I was just about to say something along the lines of, 'Sure, and I'm batman!', when suddenly I stopped moving entirely, my whole body stiff. My mouth decided it did not want to open either, so of course I couldn't make any sassy comments.
"See? So, as I was saying," she continues casually, "it would be in your best interests to avoid conflict. I don't want to cause any more chaos than necessary. So, I would just love it if you surrendered yourself to me. Then, I will let your friends go mostly unharmed. Well, minus the fact they'd be dead. "
I felt the strange grip that held my jaw shut loosen, allowing me to speak once more. But rage bubbled up inside of me, fueling the fire within.
"No." I scowled. "You're going to have to take me by force. Prepare for the fight of your life."
Calypso visibly sighed, a slight look of disappointment crossing her features.
"Alright then. See you soon." She waved her hand.
I blinked, and once more found myself reclined against the wall, looking out amongst the bustling street. I frowned. Could I have imagined that, or was it truly Calypso that had conjured up such a spell? That was indeed strange.
But I knew Calypso was coming. If not here already.
I straightened my posture, pushing myself away from the wall, Riptide in my hand (in pen form of course), prepared for what might happen.
I had a feeling it wasn't going to be good.
<•STREETS OF NEW YORK, 3RD PERSON POV•>
Percy looked around warily. Nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary.
His muscles were tense, jaw clenched tightly as he scanned the crowd of civilians.
Across the street from him, a young man, maybe in his late thirties, opened his car door which was parked on the side of the road. As soon as the car door clicked open, a series of triggers pulled, a well placed explosive went off, the car exploding in an almost surreal scene. The man flew back, his heart pounding no more, the surrounding people caught in the deadly debris of the explosion, as flames flickered around the sidewalk.
Almost immediately people were sent into a frenzy. The sounds of screams filled the air, children sobbed as they were separated from their mothers in the frantic crowd. People ran in all directions, Percy couldn't see more than ten feet in front of himself, as he was shoved about in the mass of people.
He knew this was part of Calypso's plan. First she needed to clear the streets. What a perfect way to make them hurry.
Not ten minutes later nearly every person had fled the charred scene. The faint noise of sirens above New York traffic slowly coming closer.
Percy tapped the communicator ear set he wore. Sending out a quick code to everyone, Calypso was here.
Annabeth, who had been watching from the inside of a nearby building (which was empty also) stepped out, quickly walking over to Percy and standing by his side. She took his hand and squeezed gently. He squeezed back.
The smell of cinnamon soon wafted into their nostrils, they knew who it was before they saw her. She appeared in the middle of the deserted street, smiling happily. Percy released Annabeth's hand.
He gripped Riptide firmly, Annabeth, who had to borrow a dagger from Tony, due to her own weapon still being at camp, drew her dagger, getting into a fighting stance.
Calypso chuckled. She conjured a shining silver blade out of thin air, green gemstones glittered on the hilt.
Calypso, finding it unfair being two on one, flicked her wrist, sending Annabeth flying back, hitting a brick wall, a sickening crack sounding through the air.
Percy charged. With a flash, he held Riptide, swinging in a wide arc at Calypso, whom of which wasn't nearly half as skilled as Percy, but knew that one hit with this cursed blade would guarantee death. But she had another element on her side. Percy was angry. Filled with rage. His fighting was sloppier than usual, his swings too wide, his blocks too careless, his defense was left open.
Soon all you could see was a silver and golden blur of movement, the fight picking up with every second.
Loki had drawn Thor, Tony, and Bruce's attention, having surrounded some of the panicked civilians. Natasha was trying to get a lock on Loki, aiming a shot at him, but found it hard to tell which one of the many clones were fake or real. Clint, on the other hand, aimed down towards Calypso, but the fact that she and Percy were fighting at such close range, and so lightning fast, made it hard for even he to get a good angle to shoot at without running the risk of hitting Percy.
Calypso mumbled a few spells she had learned underneath her breath. A dirty trick, yes, but all is fair in war. The effect hit Percy almost immediately. His actions slowed, and he felt his eyelids drooping.
'No. ' Percy mentally scolded himself. 'I will not give in. For Annabeth.'
For Annabeth. He repeated in his mind, a rush of strength washing over him. This was for Annabeth. For Annabeth.
For Annabeth. She was his strength, the one thing in his life that stuck with him, from Tartarus and back, through thick and thin. He was not going to let her down. Every smile, every kiss, every moment they spent together flashed across Percy's mind, he could not let her down.
Every sad moment when Percy felt like there wasn't an end to his torture, Annabeth had been there. His Annabeth. Nothing else mattered. Nothing.
Calypso began backing up, starting to panic at the fact it seemed her spell hadn't worked, in fact, he was moving faster, a new strange strength pushing him forward. Calypso said the words faster, putting more effort into it, Percy slowed a fraction, but only a bit. Calypso knew he couldn't keep this up forever, he would eventually tire. But even Calypso couldn't keep up either. She was beginning to feel tired.
Percy began feeling tired, sluggish. He couldn't let Calypso see. She'd use it to her advantage, and her having more power was the last thing he needed. Her sword swung dangerously close to Percy, his head pulling back in time to miss the sharp blade. He quickly countered the move, thrusting his sword at her stomach, though his own move was deflected.
"Percy....." he heard a quiet and dazed voice, it was Annabeth's.
Percy turned towards the sound of his beloved, his guard let down for only half a second. But it was long enough. Calypso grinned, seeing her chance, pushing her weapon deep into Percy's stomach, the poisoned blade seeping into his flesh like a knife through butter.
Percy felt the pain, all being sent excruciatingly through his body. Annabeth gasped, Percy's head turned back to Calypso, who grinned wickedly. She let go of the handle, smiling in satisfaction to herself.
Percy stumbled back, then fell upon the warm pavement. He reached to the sword hilt weakly and pulled it from his own body, letting out a pained yell as he did so. Calypso laughed.
Or, she would've, if right then an arrow hadn't pierced her heart. She fell back, golden ichor coursing down the front of her dress. She yanked the arrow out. It would take more than a single arrow to kill her.
Annabeth screamed in rage and anguish, charging forth and grabbing the poisoned blade from the ground beside Percy and charging Calypso, who was too stunned to do anything. Annabeth plunged the sword deep into Calypso's chest, hot tears streaming down her face. Calypso gasped, the poison coursing through her veins as she also fell to the pavement.
An image of Leo smiling happily flashed across her mind. Why was she doing this? Would this what Leo would've wanted? No. This... This was wrong. She thought it was right, to get revenge, but was it truly worth it in the end? No, it wasn't.
Calypso closed her eyes. A tear falling down her face as she took her last breath. Everything faded away.
Annabeth knelt by Percy's side, sobbing. She pressed her hands to his stomach to try and stop the bleeding. He coughed, blood trickling past the corners of his mouth.
He reached a hand out weakly, touching Annabeth's cheek gently. Her stormy grey eyes turned to him, filled to the brim with tears.
"It's... Okay.... " he said, his voice weak.
"It's not Okay! Just.... Just stay with me!!! Please... Please just.... Don't leave me...." Annabeth sobbed.
Percy's gaze fell upon the blue sky above him. The world would move on easily when he was gone. Nothing really would change. He looked back at Annabeth and her tear streaked face, everyone else would take care of her.
Besides, even if by some miracle he did survive, neither of the Camps would accept him after what he'd done. Maybe he would get Elysium though. He felt himself drifting off, the world beginning to disappear into grey.
"I... Love.... You...." he said hoarsely, his eyes closing, his hand dropped from Annabeth's face.
He let out his last breath, his heart stopping.
Percy Jackson, was dead.
